Why does DH smell of truffle oil?

DH is a very clean man who doesn't like anything even resembling mushrooms - so doesn't eat truffle flavoured things. Over the last few months I've noticed when he comes to bed after showering and brushing his teeth, he smells exactly like truffle oil to me.

Granted, I am 8 weeks pregnant and the smell seems stronger to me now, but I'd caught whiffs of it before.

Has anyone else experienced this? I had to turn away from him yesterday, even though I love the smell of truffles (when hungry!)

Can anyone else smell the truffle smell on him?

This would help rule out if it’s just your pregnancy super power, or if he smells weird.

I have read that people sometimes suddenly start smelling weird due to developing a health condition eg people smelling sweet due to diabetes.

Men smell a bit truffley. It's the smell of testosterone.

Congratulations on your pregnancy @Junebughustle .

I once heard this was from testosterone!

I just googled this - says it's a bi-product of testosterone that causes the truffle smell in men? Not sure why it would have increased tho - could be worth your husband getting his hormones checked maybe? I am sure it's nothing sinister, but I would always say check anything strange just in case, as if there was any little thing wrong it is always best to catch things as early as possible.....

Your thread interested me because I love the smell of my current husband to the extent that I will just lie and sniff him.sometimes, especially his face and neck - he calls me a weirdo but likes it really I think! I find it hard to define his smell - there is a sweet element like caramel, some spiciness, and also a muskier note that could almost be truffly. And I have sometimes noticed it's even better just after sex - maybe that makes sense with the testosterone thing?

Your husband is a bottle of Chateau Leofville du Boisson, St Emilio, 1995 based on the bouquet. He needs to be stored horizontally, in a cool place or he will not age well. Best consumed within the next 10 years.

I've had covid twice and both times I could smell/taste blood constantly. Nothing was bleeding, it was just this weird musty smell that never left. Could you have covid?

DelilahBucket · 08/01/2024 07:22

If it's his breath it could be an infection. Sinuses or tonsils most likely. DH has a similar smell when he gets a sinus infection. It makes me feel sick. It's very similar to truffle.

TravelInHope · 08/01/2024 07:38

He is having an affair with a truffle farmer.

Please research/google Parkinson’s musky smell especially as you could smell it prior to becoming pregnant.

This is a brilliant documentary which explains the musky smell that comes from sebum from pores in your skin, and also other early indicators of Parkinson’s.

I would probably put it down to being pregnant - whilst pregnant, I thought I found the most amazing aftershave for my husband, it was gorgeous and I loved it and he smelt amazing wearing it. As soon as he wore it after having our DD, it made me feel sick? To the extent that I asked him not to wear it anymore, it was horrible. Even now if I smell it anywhere it makes me feel sick!

Junebughustle · 11/01/2024 00:59

I missed some brilliant replies here!

As a bit of an update, he doesn't smell of truffles anymore, but we've both been knocked out with some sort of cold involving lots of coughing - so maybe I was sensing an infection as suggested!

Am I the only person who has no idea what truffle oil smells like?

I was just about to say the same thing.

Junebughustle · 11/01/2024 10:59

@JaneJeffer @Dooglydog it's a really popular flavour now in posh crisps, and in restaurants for some pasta and pizza dishes. Its also now hard to find a restaurant that doesn't do truffle and parmesan fries!

It's like a...perfumey mushroom smell, and very strong.

Thanks @Junebughustle I don't think it's caught on here yet!

Ep2024 · 01/02/2024 03:52

Did it ever resolve? I have been experiencing this all day with my husband, even after he showered and brushed his teeth! It’s gotten stronger since then and starting to bother me - really bizarre. My husband has also had a vasectomy and I haven’t had a late cycle, so it would be very unlikely that I am pregnant.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 01/02/2024 05:10

Truffle oil smells exactly like garlic to me, maybe he eats a lot of that.
Agree it's probably pregnancy though. Maybe carry around a sachet of coffee beans to clear your nose 😁

He's 40. I do wonder if it's pregnancy but I'm sure I'd noticed it before getting pregnant, but it was mild and bearable!

Id say mostly pregnancy, but potentially also him being 40. Smells went crazy for me everytime I was pregnant and I couldn't stand now XH smell. When he turned 40 well after we'd done having kids his smell did get a lot stronger. I noticed the same thing about myself once I hit 40 and a couple of friends have similar experiences with them or their OH getting a stronger smell around that age.
