Wish postman/woman would leave it

I have been sleeping in a lot lately and can’t change this too much and I know it’s no one else’s fault but I need the rest.
the postman has knocked on 3 separate occasions, always early in the morning and then posted a postcard through my door to book a redelivery. I did but there were no time slots. Maybe I’m just tired but door knocking sets me off, I cant answer the door. The books I bought were cheap. Before anyone asks, no, I am not and will never be able to go to a collection point and I won’t be discussing why, I just can’t

Go to bed earlier and get up earlier. At least until you’ve got your parcel.

If you don’t like any of the suggestions people have made, then what, in your ideal world, should the postie do?

ManchesterLu · 03/01/2024 11:44

I get the impression you have some kind of disability that means you struggle to get to the door fast enough (sorry if that's wrong).

Can you get a Ring doorbell, or similar, so you can just use your phone to talk to them through it and ask them to leave the parcel on the doorstep? We do that when we've nipped out (as obviously the deliveries will always come when you're out for 5 minutes) and it works fine.

As others have said, if you don't want them to knock at all, a note on the door would work fine, with instructions.

Or, if you're close enough to your neighbours, you could ask if they would mind either a) receiving the parcels for you or b) picking them up from the post office. Or ask a family member.

It sounds like you're struggling, and I'm sure people would be willing to help you if that's the case.

This we have a parcel box outside (a fancy one I got on Etsy I love it!)

Then when I get emails through with delivery times I just select the parcel box as a safe place if I’m not in.

Annoyingly though Royal Mail are the mos likely to ignore the parcel box and try to leave it with my nightmare neighbours a lot! I think they have slightly stricter policies on what they can leave. Any other delivery company go straight for the box as I think it saves them time and I prefer it that way too as I can get my parcel in my own time.

Royal Mail are a complete pain in the arse when it comes to parcels. If I've ordered something from Amazon and the deliverer turns out to be them, I'm always tempted to cancel the order.

They will never follow instructions about where to leave parcels. Just continue to faff about with writing notes and taking the parcel away for another day. Which most of the time is not the day they state on their card.

When I've been ill or trying to sleep, and left a big note telling them to put parcels in the porch, they decide to knock loudly instead.

Far prefer the couriers who always do as I ask them.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 03/01/2024 11:57

Just answer the flaming door and go back to bed afterwards. I'm surprised they've even bought it back 3 times. Ours re delivers once and if you don't answer it goes straight down to the sorting office where you have no choice but to call and collect it yourself.

Don’t think Royal Mail or Parcelforce are allowed to leave parcels?

Amazon will. Can you order from there?

Well not if Amazon use Royal Mail for the delivery which they sometimes do.

TheFormidableMrsC · 03/01/2024 12:06

OP what do you want everybody to say?

Oddly snipey comment 🤷‍♀️
We receive parcels from Amazon most weeks, always delivered by their vans.

OP: if you order from Amazon itself rather than independent sellers, their drivers will leave your parcels in a nominated place.

BarbaraBuncle · 03/01/2024 12:14

Do you have a safe place they, or a neighbour, can leave a parcel? Our posties are fine with leaving a parcel in our shed, if we're not at home to take it in.

I think, if you go on the Royal Mail website, you can select a date for redelivery and then you can make sure you're there to answer the door.

LakeTiticaca · 03/01/2024 12:16

You won't answer the door and you won't go to the collection centre. What do you actually think the postie should do?

JustExistingNotLiving · 03/01/2024 12:18

@LakeTiticaca like it’s the case for many other people, leave it in a safe place/behind the wheelie bin/with a NDN maybe?
I mean that’s pretty common isn’t it?

Pixiedustandtwinkletoes6 · 03/01/2024 12:19

I have this. But my fiancee works nights an I've repeatedly asked the postman not to ran tan on the door even when just posting the ordinary mail. It's like he gets a kick out of being so noisy. My poor guy goes to bed then is woken up but a school bus beeping outside our house for a child who is round the corner (it's a t junction) then he falls back asleep, then the post arrives.

I've complained to Royal mail get nowhere.

PickledPurplePickle · 03/01/2024 12:21

Riseandshinee · 03/01/2024 10:24

I payed for the items

If you paid for them you knew they would need to be delivered, so you either need to answer the door or go and pick them up

YABVU

We have a large post box - can you put this outside your house?

IncompleteSenten · 03/01/2024 12:23

I agree with pp that a secure parcel box outside your house is the way to go if at all possible. You can get ones that can be screwed into brick or concrete.

Have you tried noise cancelling headphones or a sleep headband that plays white noise so you won't hear the door?

Zingy123 · 03/01/2024 12:26

You shouldn't order stuff if you won't be there to answer the door. I'm a postie and we have strict rules where we can and can't leave parcels.

Haver74 · 03/01/2024 12:36

The obvious solution is don't order things to be delivered if you can't answer the door 🤔

You're upset about normal daytime noise. Get him some earplugs. What the hell do you want RM to do? Come in the evening when he's awake?

Kalevala · 03/01/2024 12:43

Do you have a disability that means you physically can't get to the door? Or are you sleeping through the knocking? Could you get a doorbell that rings where you will hear it, won't help for this delivery but maybe the next?

BreatheAndFocus · 03/01/2024 12:55

I have been sleeping in a lot lately and can’t change this too much and I know it’s no one else’s fault but I need the rest

Ok, fair enough - but why then are you knowingly ordering parcels that arrive when you want to sleep?? I understand you don’t want to answer the door probably because you’re have asleep, undressed or whatever, but why can’t you go to the PO to collect them? It’s hard to make suggestions if you don’t explain fully.

Royal Mail offer a number of options for your parcel, including a safe space. Why can’t you choose that? Do you have no outside space? Would a neighbour take your parcels for you? You could even offer a small payment to them if it’s worth it for your sleep/MH.

penjil · 03/01/2024 13:01

Redshoeblueshoe · 03/01/2024 09:52

Don't you have an area they can leave it in ? For me deliveries are left in my blue recycling bin (which is for paper)

Royal Mail's policy is not to leave packages, but to take them back to the delivery office.

I didn't mean it to be snipy!

I've never seen an Amazon branded van in my area, they usually use DPD and the bloke who does that run is very good. Sometimes they use Evri and the woman who does that is generally okay but changes slots quite a bit.

Also sometimes they use Royal Mail who are by far the worst. They give you a slot, but with the caveat that it's a hoped for time, never keep to it anyway, rarely follow instructions left, and don't always come back when they say they will.

This is all for things from Amazon themselves. So it seems to differ depending on where you live.

AlohaRose · 03/01/2024 13:27

So your solution seems to be to wish that the postman would "leave it"? Leave it where?? Do you have a safe place or box on your doorstep? Are you happy for them to leave it out in the rain - given that it doesn't seem to have stoped for the past week? You would be the first person to complain I bet if the package was stolen or damaged this way!

Yes you have paid for the item to be delivered, that covers initial delivery on the postman's round and a redelivery if necessary, it's not covering a personal delivery at a time of your choosing!

Liquorish · 03/01/2024 13:51

I’ve been lucky that over Christmas my post lady has started leaving them tucked in behind my plant pots. A postman before Christmas asked if I minded them going to a neighbour if I wasn’t in. Would that be an option for you? Or trying to catch them one day and explain or leaving a note on your door to remind them.

caringcarer · 03/01/2024 13:59

My postie tried to deliver an item very early this morning about 6.35am. dogs barking their heads off but time DH got on his dressing gown and went down he saw him driving off in his van. Note through the door. I think deliveries before 7am are not good. OP you can get a lockable parcel box fitted to your wall near your door.

Yeah that's not great. They could scare an elderly person trying to deliver at that time.
