What happened to Younique?

siriusblackcat · 02/01/2024 18:26

It used to be everywhere, women trying to flog it all over Facebook with badly applied make up videos.
Now I never see it.
Has it been overtaken by Scentsy?

2 x Younique
1 x Tropic
1 x Bodyshop

I only buy from one and don’t see the problem with them tbh.

Josette77 · 03/01/2024 02:14

I had no clue Bodyshop was a MLM!

Not the actual shop just the home sales. Although I won't step foot in the shops now either as I won't support mlms in anyway

Not sure I'd have much confidence in the advice of a life coach who bought into pyramid selling 😬

They're a pretty good example of what not to do, at least!

MeinKraft · 03/01/2024 11:38

Is doterra gone now as well? One of my fb friends absolutely swore by doterra, it cured all sorts in their house and then all of a sudden it was never heard of again

TheAirbender · 03/01/2024 11:55

Funny - just the other day DH and I were trying to remember the name of the shit Aloe Vera company and then, 5 mins later (this will out my location to some extent!) we drove into a Maccy Ds car park only to see that the “Forever Living” HQ was the next door building!

I would have put money on it having disappeared completely before seeing that.

Disturbia81 · 03/01/2024 12:02

Thank god I don't have friends like this

ShinyPikachu · 03/01/2024 13:09

I still see a couple of Younique people around me but it's mostly Body Shop, Avon and FM at the moment. A few of the Younique people seem to have gone to Urban Retreat which one minute seems to be shampoo and make up and the next minute is "food supplements" for weight loss or "healthy tummies".

We had a lot of UW posts at one point but that seems to have died down in favour of travel agents.

RandomQuestionOfTheDay · 03/01/2024 13:25

Crikeyalmighty · 02/01/2024 20:15

The travel agents ones I don't think are MLM- there's a few quite good ones as franchises - with not that high a level an entry- I suspect that's what they are.

There are several travel agents which are MLMs.

I have one friend who is a real independent travel agent - that’s her background and she only posts about holidays not getting other people to be travel agents (after all why on earth would you want more competition?!).

I have another friend who is definitely in a pyramid scheme - as well as advertising holidays there are all the posts about generating a residual income, and getting others on board as travel agents. And her figures are based on recruiting 20 people who recruit 20 people each etc and you get a small amount of their commission up the chain. It’s ridiculous, if it’s 20 people recruiting 20 people each, after only 6 layers of that you’d have 64 million people selling holidays for you…(to who??).

Spongebobette · 03/01/2024 13:57

Oh yes the pyramid thing is SO obvious when you see words like ‘prospects’ ‘recruit’ ‘team’ ‘upline’ ‘downline’

why would you recruit people you know to sell what you are selling?

because it’s never about selling a great product, it’s about hooking more people in and getting them to spend money

if you could make a reasonable income selling a nice product to your friends and family, great.
But you can’t. The products are no better that the equivalent in the shops and very expensive

and don’t get me started on the health claims!!

Spongebobette · 03/01/2024 13:58

No wonder so many former ‘bots’ have moved on to mindset coaching or manifestation coaching - there’s no actual product

KatSlatersCoat · 03/01/2024 14:05

Slightly off topic but does anyone remember the Betterware catalogue being delivered and you would place an order when the Betterware rep came back round to collect the catalogue 😆

LittleGreenFroggie · 03/01/2024 15:19

xyz111 · 02/01/2024 19:22

Or Herbalife!!! That's gone as well fortunately

Not round my way! 3 new clubs have opened up not far from me.

NerrSnerr · 03/01/2024 16:43

My cousin is a Body Shop boy and she is completely taken in. She has been on a couple of 'retreats' and goes to all the conferences. She's tried to recruit me a few times telling me about the 'free training', I told her about how my workplace paid for my Masters including the time I was there. That shut her up.

It's so irresponsible though, I have kids so it's always 'oh hun, wouldn't you want to earn money AND be at home with your children? You're missing out on the best years' etc. Can never tell me her monthly income though.

Mywhoopdeedoo · 03/01/2024 17:21

Hopefully more people have woken up to the nonsense, I have a good, well paid, stable job but was told I was ‘jealous’ by a juice plus hun

YouOKHun · 03/01/2024 17:27

@NerrSnerr trying to guilt parents (usually mothers) into signing up is unforgivable. MLM does so much damage to families and relationships and when you examine what sign ups have to do in terms of time commitment it’s most definitely family unfriendly (zoom calls all evening, weekend conventions (not free to attend either), endless pressure on SM and WhatsApp etc from the upline, endless social media posts). All this “time freedom” and these people end up out of pocket, sometimes catastrophically so.

It sounds like your friend is in that twilight zone where she is parroting what she’s told while desperately wanting it to be true but knowing in her heart that it isn’t working (and assuming it’s her fault). The whole time she’s being told that doubters fail and bossbabes win by being relentlessly positive and focussing on their dream. If she wants it enough she will achieve it. No doubt you’re being explained away as either, 1)a network marketing failure, 2) envious and/or 3) an unimaginative 9-5 drone. It’s sad really. What a shame she can’t sit down and do a profit and loss sheet and be honest with herself about how much more she’s spent than she ‘s made. It’s hard watching the MLM car crash unfolding.

Crikeyalmighty · 03/01/2024 21:12

@RandomQuestionOfTheDay blimey- I actually did look at a couple of business buy ins (quite a few thousand) that were not based remotely on that- purely were franchises and quite interesting ones too- you certainly didn't go round recruiting others- I'm very business savvy as we have a good business already (of 16 years) and wouldn't have touched anything with a whiff of MLM with a barge pole- didn't realise that MLM had touched that industry too !!

PensionPuzzle · 03/01/2024 21:21

If I wanted to buy MLM products via Facebook friends now I think I've only got access to Avon (she's been doing it absolutely forever, knows it is what it is and doesn't overdo posts). I can get Tropic via a neighbour as well but that's about it! Five years ago I could have taken my pick of the MLM product offerings.

I LOVE Usborne books so much, childhood memories etc, it really pains me that they went MLM. I generally buy them when they pop up in Aldi now...

SideshowAuntSallyx · 03/01/2024 21:25

Body Shop and Scentsy here.

Startyabastard · 03/01/2024 21:27

I used to know 2 people from uni that did Arbonne. Does anyone remember that? Poor buggers.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/01/2024 21:39

Why are you all seeing these on your social media feeds? I don't see any of them! I only tend to use FB though, to be fair, I only use Insta very occasionally.

I have mainly seen it on FB. When someone becomes an MLM bot I usually unfriend or mute as it's annoying. The only one I keep on my timeline is my cousin so I can keep an eye on whether she's tying to exploit family members with her bullshit.

Painintheback · 03/01/2024 21:54

My six year old received a children's make up set for Xmas branded younique😅 highly unlikely to be the same thing.

Unfortunately after her 'expert' application it hasn't come off- more like a sharpie 😬

YouOKHun · 03/01/2024 22:02

@Painintheback people who get involved in MLM are encouraged to buy product to achieve promotion (and their upline is rewarded for what they buy not at the point they manage to sell it). Therefore many have so much stock piled up in their garages and spare rooms that it becomes the only thing they give as gifts when they realise they will never sell it. So I wouldn’t be surprised if it is the real thing! I also wouldn’t be surprised if your daughter’s application is a good deal more subtle than some of the demos of Younique make up I’ve seen!
