I really enjoy knitting but the finished results are disappointing. Any ideas that aren't cooking or reading? Thanks

Have you tried any other crafts? Maybe take a trip to hobbycraft, if you have one nearby and see what they have. They sell kits aimed at beginners

I quite enjoy card making and basic jewellery making 😊

JennieTheZebra · 02/01/2024 11:40

Fellow knitter here. What’s disappointing about your knitting? Maybe I or others could help? 😊

LenaLamont · 02/01/2024 11:40

Crochet, because amigarumi are pretty easy and fun to make?

Embroidery, cross stitch, macrame and sewing are all easy to do at home via YouTube tutorials etc.

Baking, vegetable gardening, bird watching… there are loads of things to try.

Sewing! I started in 2020 and haven't looked back (or been in a clothes shop) since.
I love that it's so much quicker than knitting - you can have something finished in a matter of hours (or of course you can do something involved and take your time over it).

There are SO many great indi pattern designers out there now, and dressmaking is a LOT more accessible than it was 10 years ago even.

The knitting itself is good but when sewn together it doesn't look like the picture, as in amateur!

TheChosenTwo · 02/01/2024 11:51

I love jigsaw puzzles! Got one for Christmas that I might start today 😂

Sorry, should have said, I did a sewing class and never got to like it. I wish I did though, such a great skill!

Redshoeblueshoe · 02/01/2024 11:54

Have you tried crocheting the knitted pieces together ?

Mirrorballsocial · 02/01/2024 11:57

I like doing cross stitch /tapestry with yarn rather than than the threads as it's less fiddly.

What about other crafts? Like diamond painting, crochet, paper crafts or sewing?

JennieTheZebra · 02/01/2024 12:00

@1newname I presume you’re the OP? There’s a few ways of tackling that issue. Personally, I really dislike patterns that need sewing together so I just don’t knit them. Do you know how to knit in the round? You can make jumpers/ sleeves as round tubes so, once you know how to do that you never have to seam again! Other than that, there’s a variety of seaming methods, some of which look better than others. This is a good list but it’s worth experimenting https://www.knitgrammer.com/blog/seaming-methods-for-knitting/

Reading challenges - this could be a read along on your own or with a forum. I’m doing a year of wonder this year and a 24 reading challenge. I’m brought a book journal.

Fitness challenge- I’ve brought a stepper to do at home and challenging myself to so many a week

Mind growth- I have a mind growth journal that I can dip in and out of - a 5 year diary that I’m recording my exercise and mood in - tiny bit to do each day and a journal which is one sentence a day about something outside of work I have done

Using my brain - so this year I’m learning about:
Art - I have some DVDs such as Simon Schama and learning about Art and some books that I’m going to do
Nature- I’ve got a child’s game to learn some trees 😂
Birds - feeding table and binoculars and a book for me and the children to record the birds we see
Classical music - year of wonder above
Audio books on CD - just finished Bill Brysons short history of nearly everything and just about to start a Christmas carol.

with knitting I highly recommend knitting at home and then dropping in to a knitting club - I go to a fab one and I’m very rural that’s run in a knitting shop and cosy and free and it’s thriving about 30 members - help always available

Tapestry - I do a preprinted one

Netflix - we watch the history 101 but plenty of documentaries

podcasts - how to fail, the rest is history etc

set up your own blog - I’ve done this but don’t know if I will have time this year - but I’m embracing life I have to else I will just be miserable

SummerInSun · 02/01/2024 12:07

Like PP, I never managed to get the hang of kitting - even my scarves had crooked sides - but then a friend taught me to crochet and I like it much better and produce nice blankets etc.

margotrose · 02/01/2024 12:09

Jigsaws or adult colouring.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 02/01/2024 12:16

Paint toy/model soldiers. Two of the finest painters in this country are women.

redcounter · 02/01/2024 12:24

Cross stitch. Look at Dimensions kits, they aren’t quick but you can get some beautiful finished pieces.

AvoSourdough · 02/01/2024 12:39

Miniature kits
Learn a new language
Calligraphy/brush lettering
Lego or other model building

Unabletomitigate · 02/01/2024 12:43

Why is your knitting disapointing you?
Try fair isle knitting if you haven't already, Marie Wallin has some great patterns. Or if you fancy something more modern or take a look at Westknits, Stephen West, patterns for inspriation.

Himawarigirl · 02/01/2024 12:46

I love cross stitch. Crochet looks good too, the amount of things you can make.

Thebookdragon · 02/01/2024 12:46

I forgot to say board games and jigsaws are good too.

but I’ve just downloaded a free app duolingo to do my French and it’s fab.

Will shortly we dusting off the telescope to do some star gazing too!

Dinobooklover · 02/01/2024 12:48

Crochet (easier than knitting), embroidery or cross-stitch (fun patterns on etsy!), jigsaw puzzles.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 02/01/2024 12:48

What's disappointing about your knitting? Have you tried crochet? Lots of people find it easier.

TragicMuse · 02/01/2024 13:14

Another knitting thing - are you properly blocking your finished work? It makes ALL the difference...

I sew, do a tiny bit of jewellery, bit of origami sometimes, various bits and pieces. But sewing is my love. I've got less time at the moment but I'm itching to get back to it...

BrieAndChilli · 02/01/2024 13:27

I got a cricut for Christmas so that is my new hobby!

My other hobby is cake decorating - i do baking but my main hobby is the icing work eg for birthday cakes or iced biscuits etc.

Reading but i tend to do netflix binges now so don't read as much.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 02/01/2024 13:40
