What do you buy from Costco?

I've been about 3-4 times since I got my membership last year, and everytime I go I end up getting overwhelmed and not knowing what to buy. I want to make the most of my next trip soon, what do I need? I usually buy the crates water, the tray of sandwiches and other random stuff I fancy at the time.

I'm thinking I should buy some household essentials next. How do people rate their own brand washing detergent/tablets etc? I'm sure it probably works out cheaper in the long run to buy those in bulk.

What do others buy when they go?

@Ceci03 Butter freezes.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 02/01/2024 11:26

Depends how big your family is and how much storage you have. It’s rarely cheaper just the convenience of bulk.
we are a small family in a small family so our membership is definitely wasted on us.

things I buy:
massive bags of crisps (for the teens)
massive bag of rolls (freeze well)
Hot chicken
fridge naan breads
broccoli salad (someone recommended it here, it’s incredible, just watch the use by dates)
dirty wedges (fantastic if we have teen friends coming round)
shortbread
Chewing gum

i think that’s it for us. I don’t buy that everytime just if appropriate!!

Why are people buying bottled water in the U.K.?

MrsCarson · 02/01/2024 11:35

We get,
Mince and split it into smaller portions to freeze.
Sausages and split into packs
Skippy peanut butter
Kirkland Olive oil and refill a smaller bottle
Pack of assorted danishes
Vitamins
Kirkland Laundry stuff
Pizza
Random things through the year as we needed, electronics, Dh's tools, an airfryer.
Petrol.

Like I say good for a larger family but it would
Take me a year to chomp that much quinoa lol. If I had a basement I mite be tempted

We aren't a big family (2 children under 5) but we definitely go through it 😂
Yogurts are £2.50 for 24 instead of £2 for 6 for instance and my kids have yogurt pots a lot! But yes you need the space to store it. We luckily have a large pull out cupboard which is pretty much the costco cupboard and a large freezer.

I have to be gluten free so use quinoa quite a bit also in replacement to rice as higher protein content.

Yea I do t get this either! I have a friend with a very small house and you can hardly get into the kitchen for crates of water from Costco!!!

Missymarple · 02/01/2024 11:52

There are only 2 of us in this house but thankfully we have loads of storage so for us it's about convenience. We always get

Toilet roll
Croissants and muffins (freeze in portions)
Big slab of meat to be portioned for the feeezer
Butter chicken (we get a freezer portion out of it as well as a meal)
Fabric conditioner
Tissues
Clingfilm
Yoghurts
Dry shampoo
Vitamins

I try very hard not to pick up the giant drum of sourdough pretzels but I am only human 😂

XmaswasbadNYisworse · 02/01/2024 12:23

Trays of sushi!
Way bigger and cheaper than anywhere else and much better quality than supermarkets

I never understand it either. I see crates of the stuff going out to families.

occasionally it’s more practical than a reusable bottle, for the majority though a reusable makes more sense.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 02/01/2024 12:27

Yes. Clingfilm, foil etc. it’s expensive but massive and not more difficult to store than a lidl size

Handy to keep in the car boot when we are out and about and forget to bring drinks flask/finish water in flasks.

Witchbitch20 · 02/01/2024 14:05

Following as I’ve just bought a membership.

Twins3007 · 02/01/2024 14:22

all what everyone has said previously but I think the best buy are their Mac 3 razor blades , great value for a big pack

Twins3007 · 02/01/2024 14:25

Londonnight · 02/01/2024 10:58

I'm going tomorrow! Petrol is the first thing I'm getting as they are always around 15p a litre cheaper than anywhere else.

I buy Kirkland toilet roll
Dishwasher/ washing machine tabs
Dettol liquid [ used to buy Flash liquid but they don't seem to do it anymore ]

Salmon
Chicken
Coffee
Water

A tip is to make sure you are actually getting things cheaper than anywhere else. It's always tempting to buy far more than you actually need.
I find getting any signal on my phone is non existent -- I'm sure Costco do this deliberately, so check before you go on prices

This, I can never get a signal in Costco and like you I always think its so you cant go on your phone and check prices elsewhere

LonelynSad · 02/01/2024 19:10

Mac & cheese croquettes - heavenly! Not got that horrible 'cheap frozen food' taste they're creamy and amazing

We have lead pipes 🤷🏼‍♀️

MissAtomicBomb1 · 02/01/2024 19:16

Oh but in answer to the OPs question, I don't think the savings on most things are that great to be honest when you factor in the having to store it etc.
We tend to use it when catering in bulk so

  • BBQ packs in summer
  • pastries to take to work on birthdays
  • birthday cakes
  • pizzas

But the best bargain is definitely the petrol!

MuddledMadge · 06/01/2024 13:53

I buy lots of toys at Christmas.
Tinned tomatoes
Coffee
Cans of fizzy
Nandos sauce
Books
Birthday cakes
Petrol

Lots of other things I probably don't need!

trader21c · 06/01/2024 14:24

Kirkland toilet roll, tea bags, sparkling water, orange juice (bottled), maple syrup, washing liquid, vitamins

Deathraystare · 06/01/2024 14:43

I sometimes used to go with my brother who had a card. I would buy Depends incontinence pants for my mum (RIP). I also bought a pack of cotton wool pads (several in a pack), he would buy flea treatment for the cats. One thing he bought that I liked was the salmon burgers. He bought all the usual stuff including a huge box of crisps.

If you like cakes they do huuuge ones for parties. I used to love going in the cold cheese place just to look at all the cheese!

A cold cheese place? Nothing like that in mine, I do like the sound of it though, is it a separate room?

I always wonder about people buying fruit and veg, it's so much dearer than anywhere else

custardlover · 06/01/2024 14:52

Cashew nuts
Cat food
Loo roll and kitchen roll
Coffee pods
Chicken thighs (portion and freeze)
Feta (keeps for ages)
Pink lady apples
A box of mint Aeros
A pallet of tinned Chickpeas
Chopped tomatoes
Marmite

custardlover · 06/01/2024 14:52

Oh and period products

NecklessMumster · 06/01/2024 14:53

Stuff that you'll use anyway and won't overeat it, so avoid sweet stuff etc. We buy
Toilet roll
Coffee beans
Tray of tin tomatoes
Tray of tinned chickpeas
Big bag pasta
Bin liners
Lurpak
Bread..pack of 2 loaves or part bake baguettes
Aubergines...not too many in a bag so I can get through them
Beer etc at Christmas/party
Sometimes trainers/pants/ pack of mens white t shirts

Oppositioblue · 06/01/2024 14:58

I go with a friend and use her membership card. I’ve only been a few times but I have found Tesco to be equal in price or cheaper on some items.

Good value I have found is

Dove shower cream
colgate toothpaste
Spices/seasonings
Paratha breads for the freezer
Their ready meals are good but we didn’t like their pizza
Lots from the bakery. Their muffins are really good.
Coffee

I need to keep going and see what else there is but for items like dishwasher tablets, I find B&M, Tesco, Aldi to be equal in pricing.
