The Sydney fireworks were excellent, London's was just a box ticking exercise.

Everything is London is a box ticking exercise. In fact, make that everything in the UK.

We liked the drones and the Zephaniah poem. Didn’t want to hear Charles, but it isn’t all about what I want. Music was a bit crap for my tastes. But over all it’s 7 from me!

@penjil wow you sound

They never play good music for the fireworks and I say every year why can't they cut to Big Ben and do a proper countdown to midnight.

newoldfluff · 01/01/2024 06:29

It's been a party political stunt for years

Did anyone else notice that the fireworks were out of time with the drones? It appeared that they intended that the single red fireworks were meant to imitate the popping of the ‘bubble’ drones after the boy had blown the bubbles but the were out of time….although I think it must be incredibly difficult to get fireworks and drones to be in time.

The drones counting down right at the beginning were out of time also, they had only just reached 1 when the Big Ben bongs started.

It's also really really hard to time them with music. That's why so much computer software is involved now. All it takes is the wind speed to change and the whole thing seems off.

Willmafrockfit · 01/01/2024 06:47

the music was just awful, ruined it for me, the voice over was odd and as said not much to say, nhs, windrush, new king

NigelHarmansNewWife · 01/01/2024 07:05

To paraphrase Chas & Dave, there's no pleasing some of you. We enjoyed it 😁

NicoleTh · 01/01/2024 07:12

I was a bit annoyed. Voiceover was like coming from the ‘Crown TV show’, that this year decided to be nice to the heir, and his long life love. If you are going to say something to a mass of people who are diverse and have different interests and values at least distract them with decent music! :/

Fireworks were awesome - but really wish I'd watched them on mute and listened to my own music! (And closed my eyes at that fucking "London Mayor Presents.." message - did he pay for them?! Surely these are supposed to be the UK's NYE celebration, or at least England's, rather than just London's. And very definitely not just that odious little mayor's! )

They are paid for and organised by the Greater London Authority - always have been. So yes, the mayor does present them.

Yes, diverse and woke are good things.

The opposite is narrow and prejudiced, not many people want that.

I don't know exactly how the grant works, but if some of the grant is spent on fireworks, it's not being spent on actual 'needs', and therefore those 'needs' are funded by the local council tax payers.

And if it is funded by the central grant, it shoukd have said that HM Government presented the fireworks.

Oh, I see - so you wouldn't mind the Tory government being credited, just not happy for the Labour Mayor to be credited.

So it's not a matter of principle.

Is it new? We usually go for the hootenanny, but Rod Stewart was too much to bear.

Reasonably new but I think it's been that way for a few years. Certainly since the lockdown ones in 2020 where they had Captain Tom's voice at one point.

The first voice I heard said 'city' but didn't actually pronounce the 't'.

I think that is embarrassing.

Fireworks themselves were good.

I agree. Embarrassing. I'm a Londoner and we don't all talk like that. The world is watching.

The sooner we get rid of Khan the better. He's unbelievably arrogant and has not made London better. I don't know anyone, even passionate Labour voters, who have a good word to say about him. We have trusted him with the city we love and he's let us down.

The world doesn't care as much as you think

Misses point of thread but... do people really consider the London fireworks are for the whole country?! I mean, I know they're on telly but do other cities not do their own fireworks?!

I don't get the issue with saying Mayor of London on it as they fund it...

TheThingIsYeah · 01/01/2024 08:29

ElBandito · 01/01/2024 00:41

They said they were listing events that happened in London this year, but missed out the expansion of ULEZ 😢

Yes I can't think those fireworks did much for the air quality in London, tut tut.

grayhairdontcare · 01/01/2024 08:30

Watched them on tv and they were a bit meh.
Dd had a ticket for them and was queuing to get to her are for over 4 hours and then was refused entry 🙄

None in Cardiff this year. The council can't afford them

Musiclover234 · 01/01/2024 08:58

They always have cheesy music and voices talking over thats not ja new thing? Usually related to the year?

Wish they would add more drones tbh.

Has it bollocks. It’s a traditional way of welcoming the new year, it was the same when Boris Johnson was mayor.
