What equipment do you have for making salads easily?

I love salads but the chopping and prepping is often wearisome as I have arthritic hands. I would like some sort of equipment that is easy to use that will give me sliced and diced veg. I want to make lovely poke bowl type salads. I think I need something electronic rather than hand held. Any good suggestions?

I was looking for something this morning to do the same things with salads. I was put off by all the washing up with the chopping devices I found, as I don't have a dishwasher.

I don’t have a dishwasher either, just wash my chopper and salad spinner in the sink

I have a Magimix which is great fir salads - you can make dressings/hummus in it, and it also has a sliver and grater. Easy to wash by hand.

Sounds like it is easy to wash by hand. I was worried that it would get jammed up with bits of veg and be tricky to get clean. Clearly not! Smile

Arthritis put paid to me using my magimix so I got an electric grater and slicer instead. It came from a catering shop but if you google tefal fresh express you will see a similar item.

I have a large kenwood food processed but it's heavy and annoying to use. I want something quite small i think.

A chopping board, a large straight knife and a tea towel for drying leaves. The basics are still the best. 🤗

RedSnail · 31/12/2023 17:10

You get a little plastic thing with it for cleaning the veg out of the holes

That's all very well but I've already said that arthritis makes this method very difficult for me. Thanks anyway.

I don't have one but I've always fancied the spiraling things. Makes grated carat look so pretty.

mynameiscalypso · 31/12/2023 17:47

When my joints are bad, I buy ready prepared salad bits. I know it's more expensive but I'd rather pay for the convenience than either cause myself pain or go without salad.

PopcornAndGummyBears · 31/12/2023 18:00

I have the Joseph Joseph spiralizer and it’s hard enough to use. It’s fine for soft things like courgette, but pretty hard work on carrots. It’s a shame really because I love other JJ equipment for easing the pressure on my joints. (Their tin opener and rolling pin are two of my most used kitchen items precisely because they help my joints)

I am looking for something to coarsely grate carrot. I regularly make a carrot salad but want the carrot grates (I know that’s not a word!) to be thicker - even with my biggest grater, the pieces are wide, but shallow if that makes sense. I’m debating using the spiraliser and then cutting the spirals into pieces just to get the right thickness!

OhNaffOffYouWazzock · 31/12/2023 19:05

I've got a mandoline and a julienne peeler both OXO brand that are my favourites but I don't know if they'd be suitable if you have arthritis.

ApolloandDaphne · 31/12/2023 19:15

This is all very useful thanks.

A mandolins would be my suggestion, different insets do different cuts but make sure to always use the holder/ finger guard

ApolloandDaphne · 31/12/2023 19:30

I'm actually terrified of very sharp things so I doubt I will buy a mandolin.

I find a mandolin (and grater) quite hard on my elbows. I bought one but have struggled to use it because it causes my discomfort quite quickly.

nzeire · 31/12/2023 20:31

Oh, don’t chop your fingers off (I’ve watched MasterChef ;)

FishPie2 · 31/12/2023 20:43

I bought a mandolin and actually sliced the side of my thumb off and had to go to A &E (many years ago) so bought a Stainless Steel Alligator chopper and it is brilliant and have had it few years. Was amazed just now to find that it is now £93 on Amazon - think I paid about 50 for it but I use it almost daily but don't think I would pay that much for it but if you would it is brilliant. I have had electric spiralister and other assorted gadgets and given them away but this is my favourite https://theviewfromgreatisland.com/my-favorite-summer-kitchen-tool/

The alligator chopper is my favorite kitchen tool!

I adore my alligator chopper! I use it to make everything from chopped salads to salsas to gazpacho, fruit salad, and more.

this one looks pretty good OP but I've not used it personally. your thread prompted me to look them up!
