I'm the last person in the universe to get an air fryer!

Please save me from wasting £150 and having a huge appliance on my worktop for no reason by helping me to get the best out of it. What are your top tips and recipes?

Ordered one on a whim yesterday, DH is grumbling that we don't need it so I need to prove him wrong with amazing recipes.

If you register with your local library you can access ebooks and magazines including a bbc good food air fryer meals in minutes. It's got lots of good recipes. There will probably be other air fryer ebooks you can look at.
I'm just learning to use mine but so far I've enjoyed sausages, hasselback potatoes, roasted carrots and parsnips, french toast, croissants. All at minimal time and effort.

A lot of posts keep mentioning 'lovely , crispy...'

What if you don't want to eat crispy food?

We don't eat roast crispy veg.

We don't eat pies, pasties and pastries.
We don't bake things like brownies, cakes etc...

Chops are grilled, we like slowly cooked casseroles where flavours are allowed to develop.
Same with curries.
We hardly ever eat chips.

I feel like I'm missing out but can't think what I'd use it for other than convenience food which we hardly ever eat.

If I ate pies and chips every day then I could see the cost savings but I often stir fry or sauté or steam or slow cook.

Great. Then don't buy one as its not for you. It's for people who are looking for speed and convenience.

Well I didn't expect to come back from my NYE night out to all these replies! Thanks for the helpful responses. I shall enjoy my crispy food.

😂😂😂

You are not the last. I have no intention of getting one.

SunflowerSeeds123 · 01/01/2024 12:29

My postage stamp sized kitchen can't accommodate one atm, but I'm planning to move this year so hopefully will be able to get a kitchen with more space. My mum has one but I can't say her terrible cooking has improved as a result.

girlfriend44 · 01/01/2024 12:40

Not got one.

Me neither. My oven does the job fine!

Floofydawg · 01/01/2024 13:44

Stop telling me if you haven't got one - I don't care, and it's not what I asked!!

@AllAroundMyCat if you eat casseroles and curries every night then I agree it would be pointless-. I use a combination of things of which the airfryer is one - I particularly like it for crisping up jacket potatoes after microwaving and haven't had oven on

NorthernGirlie · 01/01/2024 13:54

I bloody love mine op.

DS' favourite is mince and dumplings. I brown the onions and mince in the drawer, throw in gravy and let it cook for a while then add dumplings. Doesn't dry out like it does in the oven

I cook a chicken every week then do the stick in the same drawer with the bones and veg ends etc

We've got friends staying - I cooked sausage, mushrooms and boiled eggs this morning in it

We've got the big ninja one.

dontgobaconmyheart · 01/01/2024 13:54

Since you asked so politely OP, I have had one (a gift) - thought it was shit, took up room on the top, stunk when things were cooking and cooked absolutely no recipe better or crisper than the oven. Yes it cooks some of the same basic things about 1/3 (at best) faster but it's no use if you're cooking for several as you'd have to put other things in the main oven. It broke after a few months and I was glad to get it off the counter. I suspect your DP is correct.

NorthernGirlie · 01/01/2024 13:57

Also - ds loves ramen. He chucks a steak in the air fryer while his noodles and broth go on the hob. Means no spitting and no mess on the hob

He does pasta too - boils that on the hob and does chicken and chorizo in the air fryer and then turns it into a pasta bake with cheese etc in the drawer

NorthernGirlie · 01/01/2024 13:58

Jacket potato - few minutes in the microwave then 10 / 15 minutes in the airfryer. Saves putting the oven on for an hour for a tatty!

I'll stop now 😎

I haven’t got one either 😂, doesn’t do anything a convection microwave grill does as far as I can see and I’m happy with my combi.

Same here, do you have a Panasonic one? They are absolutely fantastic, they cook pizza to perfection. I Never use the main oven

RebeccaCloud9 · 01/01/2024 14:04

We waited, but got one a couple of months ago, and honestly it is amazing. We use it all the time! Perfect for all the things that you do in the microwave and end up disappointed with eg ready meals or pastries that go soggy, they go perfectly crisp in the air fryer. And things that you'd do in the oven do quicker and more efficiently eg roast veg, fish fingers.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2023 18:02

Does anybody have one who's vegetarian? Wondering how much use we might realistically get out of one if we decide to bite the bullet.

Me. Use it daily.

Madcats · 01/01/2024 14:14

@christmaspawpaws and @Jewel1968 would you mind saying what you own/bought?

My basic workhorse microwave (which we use to pre-cook spuds, make porridge and reheat stuff) is pretty old.

The grill in our oven (and the oven, for that matter) take so long to heat up that 8 am wondering about getting a Sage (or something else).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2024 14:22

whiteboardking · 01/01/2024 14:08

Me. Use it daily.

What do you do in it?

AndMiffyWentToSleep · 01/01/2024 14:30

Definitely do NOT make a batch of cookie dough (smitten kitchen are my favourites), freeze uncooked balls of dough and then bake individual cookies as and when you want them. I find it easier to resist cold, day-old cookies than I do freshly baked-on-demand ones!
I've also been informed that it is good for crispy chickpeas and roasted broccoli.
It's just me and DS at home, so we have a small 1L one, but use it regularly.

pictoosh · 01/01/2024 14:31

I think the air fryer is the new steam cleaner.

Disturbia81 · 01/01/2024 14:31

I love mine, barely use my oven now which takes forever to heat up.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/01/2024 14:40

pictoosh · 01/01/2024 14:31

I think the air fryer is the new steam cleaner.

It's the new veganism. I know that and I have one!
