I'm the last person in the universe to get an air fryer!

Please save me from wasting £150 and having a huge appliance on my worktop for no reason by helping me to get the best out of it. What are your top tips and recipes?

Ordered one on a whim yesterday, DH is grumbling that we don't need it so I need to prove him wrong with amazing recipes.

People who are saying “emperor’s new clothes” etc, please yourselves. However, the proof is in this thread of how exceedingly useful they are, and how good they are for reducing energy usage.

@BrutusMcDogface

It's 100g self raising flour/dry ingredients - I usually do about 60g flour, a bit of wholemeal flour and some oats then some baking powder. It does make them chewier but we like the taste and the additional nutrition.
1 egg
1 TBL honey/syrup (you can up or down this as per your preference I think)
1 smashed banana.
Pinch salt and a bit of vanilla essence.

Mix all together, into greased ramekins and I put it in a cold air fryer set to 180 for 13 minutes. I have a ninja and having used a friend's air fryer recently I think mine heats up quicker and gets hotter than others so you might want to adjust that as necessary.

They also do not last so eat immediately. We usually have them for breakfast.

Thank you!!

another thing to add to this thread is that my teenager and preteen have been using the air fryer to do things like cheese toasties/paninis and a few chicken dippers etc without using the whole oven, much more quickly and safely in my opinion.

deadassjackie · 31/12/2023 17:33

We got a basic tower 4l for Xmas and so far have done croissants, chicken pieces for wraps, halloumi, homemade chips, frozen fish fingers for sarnies.
Nothing mind blowing but all things that we haven’t had to heat the oven for, it’s quicker and so much less faff and I’m really happy with it. And everything has come out tasty and nicely cooked.

@BrutusMcDogface yes, good point. I'm trying to get DS to start doing this. The boredoflunch guy has a few good ideas eg a toasted bagel with egg and cheese that I think would be good.

I do also use it for jacket potatoes and sometimes pre-microwave them and then stick them in just before he gets home from school for a substantial post school snack. Useful if we're having a late supper due to activities. Similarly, to make quick roast potatoes for DD as she's a bit of a fussy eater and this can be a good way to get potatoes down her without the hour it would take to do it properly.

DD does make herself the occasional "chocolate toastie" in there as a treat (she's 8) - once slice white bread, folded in half with a piece of chocolate in the middle, pinched closed then air fried to make it crispy on the outside and melted in the middle! Grin

PuppyMonkey · 31/12/2023 17:37

Well, people can do what they like but I love mine. There are literally a billion recipes and ideas on YouTube and Facebook and Instagram OP - that’s where I started.

I'm just off to eat the lovely roast potatoes I’ve made in mine in 22 minutes, but obviously according to the folk on here they’ll taste hideous and could have been done in a normal oven in exactly the same time and I’m just a sheep following the latest fad etc etc.

vestedinterests · 31/12/2023 17:38

I use mine A LOT, I have had mine for about 18 months. You are not the last person as my mother doesn't have one Grin

queenofthewild · 31/12/2023 17:39

I've not yet got round to getting a microwave. Air fryer is much too new fangled for me.

Thecatisboss · 31/12/2023 17:40

Me and DH got the ninja 2 drawer last week and got the Bored of Lunch cookbook too.

Did roast chicken the other day with sweet potato wedges which was the best chicken ever! We've done sweet and sour chicken today which is good too.

Wineisgreat · 31/12/2023 17:40

You're not. I haven't got one and this Christmas has done nothing to encourage me to get one. My brother brought his to do some stuff for Christmas and it was the biggest faff ever.

ButteryBiscuitBaseBiscuitBase · 31/12/2023 17:42

Boiled eggs
Bacon
Jacket spuds
Bread
Pizzas
Samosas
Any leftovers

All do well in the air fryer. It's, a 6L one, only cost £70 though...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2023 17:47

Boiled eggs? Say, what?!

mathanxiety · 31/12/2023 17:47

I've eaten a lot more fish than I used to since getting mine.

We did sprouts and parsnips in it at Christmas, and I've baked sweet potatoes in it all autumn. It's great for sausages, meatballs, and burgers, and cooking oven chips too.

mathanxiety · 31/12/2023 17:49

I'm feeling inspired by the comments on baking muffins...

NiceUnusualDifferent · 31/12/2023 17:50

I've just done a lovely pork joint in an hour in mine. Perfectly crispy cracking

I've done roast potatoes, sausages, fajitas loafs of others and the kids use ut a lot to make snacks after school and lunchtime at weekends. It frees up time as you don't need to stand over it like I would the hob

treeees · 31/12/2023 17:51

recently got one and so impressed. mine does pressure cooking, yoghurt making and dehydrating as well as air frying. honestly wasn't sure if I would use it but it is so great. get a combined one like that if you can. it saves money on bills too (electric cooker)

Silvers11 · 31/12/2023 17:52

We haven't got one either. I can't see that giving up a lot of space to house one, would ultimately save much hassle!

Ladybird69 · 31/12/2023 17:57

@ButteryBiscuitBaseBiscuitBase how do you boil eggs in them please?

Crikeyalmighty · 31/12/2023 17:58

The other thing I forgot to mention was pasties/pies - don't need to preheat like an oven - and unlike a microwave don't turn them flabby/soggy

10 to 12 minutes total and bobs your uncle.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 31/12/2023 18:00

Just made goat's cheese and prosciutto ham crostini in mine in 5 mins. Delish!

Luxell934 · 31/12/2023 18:01

saraclara · 31/12/2023 17:29

Great! I've ordered the slightly smaller dual ninja, so I'm not expecting a whole chicken to fit. But hopefully it'll be big enough.

We’ve got the smaller dual Ninja and a small whole chicken fits nicely!

Like everything else it depends on what you cook. They have become more popular due to COL but also due to busy schedules etc so many people make their own quick meals as opposed to one person 'cooking for the family' all the time.
I used to batch cook and just microwave/make cold food. I'd not have needed one at all!

Comedycook · 31/12/2023 18:02

I love mine. Its much quicker than the oven and I find things come out crispier

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2023 18:02

Does anybody have one who's vegetarian? Wondering how much use we might realistically get out of one if we decide to bite the bullet.

Chewbecca · 31/12/2023 18:03

Your title invited people without one to open the thread!
(e.g. me, can't see what it does that my existing cooker doesn't!).

treeees · 31/12/2023 18:05

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie yes I have one and love it for roasted veggies, roast potatoes, crispy tofu and all things veggie. Although I have the multi cooker which does pressure cooking as well as air frying - hoping to make vegan yoghurt and dehydrate some stuff soon. Very versatile.
