I am looking for some dinner suggestions for NYD, it’s just myself and 3 daughters (husband is deployed this Christmas/NY) but would still love a special sit down 3 course meal.

Two DD’s are vegetarian, 3rd and myself like meat so ideally looking for something that I can either substitute the meat part for another protein or something that I can make two versions of the same (minus the meat in one)

We have had a chat this morning about ideas, and a few ideas floated about, lamb with Humous, roasted aubergine, mint, feta, pomegranate & quinoa warm salad, or a posh roast, beef/veg equivalent wellington, red wine sauce veg, potato’s etc but neither have been a hit with everyone.

Whats on everyone else’s menu this NYD?

Steak pie as I'm in Scotland

Plump82 · 29/12/2023 13:42

I'm in Scotland also, so traditionally steak pie. However as I'm vegetarian I make a jackfruit steak pie which imo is delicious!!

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 29/12/2023 13:46

Scotland here - steak pie. I hate steak pie but it’s ingrained in my shopping list for NYD!

Also Scottish... so steak pie and I buy a vegetarian pie for me.

I’m wondering if your thread attracted Scots because we have a set New Year’s Day menu 😂

Malarandras · 29/12/2023 13:48

I’m in Scotland/ am Scottish and am not having steak pie as nobody in our house likes it! We are having meatballs and pasta, followed by cheesecake likely.

stepintochristmas1 · 29/12/2023 13:49

Also Scottish so steak pie .

tarheelbaby · 29/12/2023 14:01

In the southern US, they eat collards (winter greens) for money and hoppin' John (a pilau of rice and black eyed peas) for luck.

When I spend NYE with my neighbours, we often have guacamole with tortilla chips and loaded nachos.

ArcaneWireless · 29/12/2023 14:02

Guess what?

So steak pie.

Also caprese open pastry tart.

DingDongMerrilyOnHi · 29/12/2023 14:05

Haha I’m from Scotland as is my DH, but we live in the SW now.

He did grow up with steak pie every NYD but I didn’t (English chef DF) so we have the battle every year of him wanting that and me wanting something more refined…

He’s away this year so I intend to make the most of it!! 😅

Steak pie!

Do you eat fish? What about salmon en croute for you and vegetable en croute as a veggie option?

BookwormDadUK · 29/12/2023 14:14

Haha. Scotland also and though I endorse the stake pie message, our menu is mad. My wife and I have a tradition dating back years that NY is quiet and just for us after the craziness of Christmas. We take it in turns to choose a film series and design a menu themed around it. This year it's her pick - Star Wars - and she's gone insane. Pork ribs are involved.

BookwormDadUK · 29/12/2023 14:14

**steak (cringe)

DingDongMerrilyOnHi · 29/12/2023 14:15

I’m probably going to get flamed for this being a Scot and all but I just don’t view steak pie as nice/special meal…

More like a Tuesday night bang in the oven after school and work…

OP that sounds lovely!

Not sure yet, but definitely nothing involving turkey, roast potatoes, yorkies, gravy etc. Sick of the sight of anything roast related! We have used up virtually everything..did a second batch of soup yesterday

AgnesX · 29/12/2023 14:16

Another Scot .... Sirloin roast here (steak pie on Burns night though).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2023 14:18

Italian-esque braised lentils with meat or veggie sausages. Apparently the lentils symbolise good luck in the new year. We’re having them tonight with dauphinois potatoes. No idea what we’re having on NYE yet, but it’s just dp and I. Might bake a Camembert.

LBOCS2 · 29/12/2023 14:20

We're doing a Middle Eastern style menu - dips and bread followed by Ottolenghi's confit chickpeas or lamb and apricot tagine. Served with a roasted vegetable couscous and a basmati orzo pilaf. For pudding we have a nectarine and honey galette or pistachio tiramisu.

Jellycats4life · 29/12/2023 14:23

I had no idea about the Scottish tradition of steak pie!

Lalalanding · 29/12/2023 14:25

Wow everyday is a school day I never knew the steakhouse tradition but I like it.

Awumminnscotland · 29/12/2023 14:44

Usually steak pie here on the west but lamb this year. Grew up in North East and wasn't aware of the steak pie tradition then.

chipsandpeas · 29/12/2023 14:47

scottish, so yeah steak pie

PTSDBarbiegirl · 29/12/2023 14:55

Scotland too so soup, steak pie, cranachan, cheese & oatcakes and champagne. PP idea of roast lamb, aubergine sounds delicious. Thinking Scallops & black pudding with chorizo, smoked salmon for Hogmanay on 31st.

Astridspuzzle · 29/12/2023 15:01

😁 I live in Scotland but I'm not from here. Did not know about the steak pie tradition.

We are having roast beef 😁

Astridspuzzle · 29/12/2023 15:02

Live in the North East so perhaps steak pie not big here anyway...
