We've not been out since Boxing day - is anyone more lazy than we are?

3 DC went for a long bike ride on Tuesday but since then they've all been indoors. They have lots of new toys/ board games but have watched a fair bit of TV too. They've all had baths and are in clean clothes each day (albeit they are in lounge about clothes instead of being proper dressed)

Can anyone beat our laziness?

On Boxing Day we drove home from my parents (75 miles) on the 27th, I had to go to Next, Tesco and Home Bargains. Oh and Argos. Yesterday, we drove to my partner's Mum's house. About 50 miles each way. Then a few hours later drove home again because I felt unwell. Left the 2 oldest kids (4) there because they had been promised a sleepover. Partner went back to collect them today. The baby and I went to Tesco again. Lucky me!

I wish I could say I had been lazy and just stayed at home but I always seem to have some random shop or place I need to go to and tbh I feel shit staying home at the best of times. I'm a "stay at home mum" of 3 so I see enough of the place 😂

Enjoy your relaxing time 😊

6 kids here (pregnant with seventh) and I ventured out today for the first time since Boxing day to drop eldest to his friend and pick up some essentials. 5/6 children have been plagued with this horrid sickness bug. Husband has been suggesting walks but no-ones wanted to take part. Its been hell to be honest!

Neversaygoodbye · 29/12/2023 16:41

@Crunchymum thanks for being honest. It can be hard seeing facebook posts of everyone busy with family gatherings (we don't have a large family) or enjoying trips out with there seemingly compliant & happy teens/young adults (my kids ages). I have one that likes to be out every day but with friends not us and one complete introvert who is enjoying lazing around their room all holiday. DH & I are mostly pottering & amusing ourselves, we like a walk so have ventured out in the rain but mostly just enjoying not being at work & the usual hustle & bustle of life.

I was climbing the walls by the 27th. Glad i was back at work for 3 days . I cant be idle.

Desecratedcoconut · 29/12/2023 16:45

I think I get lockdown flashbacks if I stay in for days on end.

KinS24 · 29/12/2023 16:53

You’re not lazy if there’s nothing you ‘should’ be doing.
I’m another one who gets stir crazy if I don’t go out though. I can’t imagine only going out twice in a month. What about vitamin D and all that? Have been for a pointless walk by the river in the drizzle today and otherwise I find a reason to pop to the shops for milk or something. My young adult DC think I’m daft. They can happily stay in their beds all day.
I also achieved my annoying need to be doing something by taking all the decs down and cleaning the house.

We do have a big family (kids have 18 first cousins!) but we did most of our family gatherings before Boxing day. We are seeing some cousins who were away for Christmas, on Sunday.

** we haven't seen the whole family but just those who live closest.

We haven't done anything particularly festive though. No Winter Wonderland / Kew Gardens festive trail etc. Way too expensive for a family of 5.

Indeed.

I have nipped out everyday in my "lunch hour" albeit just to the local shops for supplies / to the PO etc. Kids have been offered to join me but none wanted to.

Oh Gosh, this is just way too much! Hope you get some downtime at some point.

There was a thread along the lines of "who is covering the most distance this festive period" and some of the journeys people were doing were insane.

Thankfully most of our immediate family are local or within an hours drive but we have never done any epic travelling over Christmas. Our journey on Christmas day to my siblings was a 20 minute walk.

Today was the first day we've been out since the 23rd. Do I win?

Depends - was it by choice and not illness related? If so then yes you do win 😂

I did from Friday 22nd until yesterday when I had to go to work which I thought was quite impressive. Did actually go for an hours walk on Boxing Day though so that's cheating I guess?

Getting up at 5am yesterday morning and today was a shock to the system.

Not in again until next Thursday now so I can get my lazy hat back on.

RobertJohnsonsShoes · 29/12/2023 18:04

@Crunchymum by choice! Pretty stressful and shite year... we've had such a good time sitting in our pants 😂

BluePinkPurple · 29/12/2023 18:11

@AndThatWasNY @MrsRetriever Yeah, I’ve never understood what people mean by going stir crazy, climbing the walls or getting cabin fever - for me it’s leaving the house that makes me feel on edge. I could happily stay in for months on end 😂

dottydoglover · 29/12/2023 18:22

I wished I could spend days at home and be happy but I can't ! I get very restless and have to be out there doing 'stuff' even if it's just a walk. It does get on my husbands nerves ! I wasn't a good stay at home mom for this reason and much preferred being a working mother. I just like a change of scene. We are all different.

girlfriend44 · 29/12/2023 18:24

It's not lazy. Why do you think it is?

Your enjoying yourself and the weather's crap.

OhChristmassTree · 29/12/2023 18:43

I was back to work the day after boxing day or I'd probably be the same OP.

The weather has been awful and apart from me to work there's nowhere we need to go.
We don't have a dog to take out, the kids are too old to take to the park and I'm skint after Christmas.

They do a lot of football training usually though especially dd so I think they could do with some lazy days before it all starts again next week.
I don't feel the need to always be out, I love being in my house, but I do get a headache without a bit of fresh air.

waterrat · 29/12/2023 18:45

Each to their own but truly this sounds horrible to me! Today i walked about 20 000 steps around town going nowhere just because i enjoyed the beautiful winter sunlight so much

Surely putting adult needs aside this is so bad for kids? You need morninf daylight to regulate the hormones that help you sleep at night. And i think children generally need to run about every day.

My kids would absolutely climb the walls after even one day like this (and they did in lockdown ..why i hated it so much)

EverybodyLTB · 29/12/2023 19:05

We’ve done fantastically little. Telly. Gaming together. Reading and drawing. Love it. We do have a dog, so a mandatory ‘throw something on and we all walk and move about for an hour’ has to be done every day, but still feels lazy as it’s shower and back in pyjamas straight after.

After masses of cooking and hosting in the run up to Christmas, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, we have tonnes of leftovers and non-cooking food. I was careful to organise the food in order of needing to be used. Today we’ve reached the slow perishables, pannetone for lunch with a platter of apples and cut up carrots, tangerines, and we’ve had a leftover cheeses Mac n cheese with a fresh bag of rocket chucked over it.

We’re going to go for a new walk tomorrow further afield, but still sticking to the slow life and will not be doing much else either side of it. We’re all clean and fed, but need to get off the hamster wheel of life and recharge for our sanity. That said, I’ve done loads of admin tasks between lounging that have been weighing over me for ages. Because I’ve had nothing much else to do I haven’t felt the overwhelm that I’ve had in the last few months, and now feel better going into a new year without a massive to do list.

Kids getting older, no horrible husband to sour the mood, and not hosting after Christmas Eve, has made this week exactly what I wanted it to be - pure rest and relaxation!

If there'd been any sunshine here I'd have made more of an effort.

My DP is awaiting some dry weather to complete a job, I can assure there has been none for a week now.

Just to add, Pp saying kids need to get out and move, I feel like I would have previously agreed at some point, and we have moved for light/air/the dog, but since my kids have started secondary and my work has been horrendous…. I’ve changed my stance. We are mentally and physically knackered! I have done as much to balance things for my kids as I can, but schlepping to school every day in all weathers, fitting in homework and clubs that they love, finding time for their passions and interests, catching up with the subjects they struggle with, while still being sociable and helping out at home - it’s a lot for them. My kids were fit for nothing by the time they broke up from school, and so was I by the time I put my out of office on, we’ve needed proper peace and quiet.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 29/12/2023 19:26

I like the idea of staying in for days but honestly, I’d feel like shit.
I walk outside every day for my mental health.

Disturbia81 · 29/12/2023 19:30

Don't understand these kinda threads.. of course it's okay.

ARealFake · 30/12/2023 01:37

First day out today since 23rd, I love being at home though, but was feeling guilty. Had guests over but I've not left the house until today!

ARealFake · 30/12/2023 01:38

TeacherPlease · 29/12/2023 11:44

During COVID I didn’t leave the house from when lockdown was announced (25 March?) until 31 May.

I’m young(ish) healthy and well. No fear of being infected. Just lazy 😂
