Shouldn't this make you ill?

My mum cooked the Xmas turkey on Xmas morning, brought it to ours where we served it up within a couple of hours once everything else was cooked. It stayed out in this period.
Then once she was leaving she was like oh do you want some turkey I said I think it needs binning now as it's been out of the fridge basically all day, mum was like no it's fine and took it back to hers, put in the fridge and is still eating it today !! Should she not be sick now ??

No , presuming she put it in the fridge when she got it home

We are still eating ours and still alive and kicking
I think 5 days after cooking is the limit for me

FingerLickingGod · 28/12/2023 20:00

I did the same and have just finished eating it this evening.

crankit · 28/12/2023 20:01

It's the fact the turkey was cooked on the morning, then stayed out of the fridge all day til maybe 7-8pm before it got refrigerated again.
I thought meat shouldn't be out more than a couple of hours ?

We’re still eating ours. I left it out (in a cold kitchen) overnight on Christmas night too, it didn’t make the fridge until Boxing Day lunchtime.

EndOfMyTether11 · 28/12/2023 20:03

No it's fine.

ICANTSPEYK · 28/12/2023 20:03

I've basically done the same and we are all fine

mindutopia · 28/12/2023 20:06

No, that’s absolutely fine. It’s normal to rest a turkey as long or longer than you cook it, so they do often stay out most of the day. As long as it went in the fridge late afternoon/early evening. We cooked ours by 10:30am, ate at 2pm, put it away about 5-6pm and then made a pie from it again the next evening.

BasinHaircut · 28/12/2023 20:06

It’ll be fine.

AnotherVice · 28/12/2023 20:14

Well is she sick? There's your answer.

Psychoticbreak · 28/12/2023 20:21

You would never have lived through the 80's. MY parents would leave the turkey out for days after christmas just covered in foil and keep hacking at it - the ham too! Maybe this is why I have the constitution of an ox...

eddiemairswife · 28/12/2023 20:24

How have we older people managed to survive? One of my aunts had a fridge ,but the rest of us lived and are living to a decent age,

Same with my parents and they still do. I know my mum will be going to town on the countertop carcas as we speak. Steel stomach here too.

wite · 28/12/2023 20:26

No of course not. We're still eating all the meat we cooked on Christmas Day.

Binning? Dear lord 🙄

matthewstirling · 28/12/2023 20:43

I'd definitely take a turkey sandwich in a pack up and it wouldn't be put in the fridge. I wouldn't expect it to poison me and it'd be out of the fridge about 5 hrs.

crankit · 28/12/2023 20:50

Well, I stand corrected !! Why then is there so much fuss about meat being left out of a fridge for more than a few hours if actually it's fine?
And my mum has always been this way with food, and I do have a very good immune system !!

Because a lot of rules about binning stuff is what you should do in a commercial kitchen.
There are a lot if other issues linked with cooking for people rather in your own home (cross contamination, people with very weak immune system coming to eat etc etc).

I really wouldn’t get that uptight about it.

JMAngel1 · 28/12/2023 21:08

Is this a young thing? I’ve seen a few “food hygiene” posts and the OPs seem young and a bit naive re how long you can really get out of meat/poultry.
I would think nothing of using a cooked meat up to 5 days post cook. Just did a lovely bubble and squeak with Xmas Eve Roast Ham. Possibly tasted better than it did on Xmas Eve 😂

crankit · 28/12/2023 21:11

It's not necessarily the days being used after. It's the lack of being in the fridge for nearly 12 hours
I'm early 30's

Because if people bin everything that's been out of the fridge for half a day then they have to buy a lot more food, so the food manufacturers who write the warning labels on the packaging make a lot more money.

dementedpixie · 28/12/2023 21:15

In my childhood the pot of soup used to stay on the cooker top and the whole thing got heated each day until it had all been eaten. Sometimes extra water needed to be added to thin it out!

ExTheCheater · 28/12/2023 21:23

Umm no. Why would she be ill?

Same here! My mum made enough soup to feed the whole street🤣 Same with stew.

12 hours? Jesus what time did your mum leave? 🤣
