Shouldn't this make you ill?

My mum cooked the Xmas turkey on Xmas morning, brought it to ours where we served it up within a couple of hours once everything else was cooked. It stayed out in this period.
Then once she was leaving she was like oh do you want some turkey I said I think it needs binning now as it's been out of the fridge basically all day, mum was like no it's fine and took it back to hers, put in the fridge and is still eating it today !! Should she not be sick now ??

In my childhood the pot of soup used to stay on the cooker top and the whole thing got heated each day until it had all been eaten. Sometimes extra water needed to be added to thin it out!

Same here!

If it was the middle of summer it would be different but food stay out of the fridge for hours (possibly even days) in my kitchen in winter and it’s fine.

I'm with you, op...

It should be fine.

Turkey takes a long time to cool down before it can be put back in the fridge so it wouldn't have been cold for long and your kitchen probably wasn't that warm.

We are still eating ours and it was cooked on Xmas Eve.

megletthesecond · 28/12/2023 22:53

I wouldn't be eating it after being out for so long. It's not like modern houses aren't heated.
Everything goes in the fridge here. I don't have time to risk being ill.

KievLoverTwo · 28/12/2023 22:53

If she has been doing it her whole life, she will have a strong constitution.

I bet it would make you sick though!

newcusions · 28/12/2023 22:54

Didn't buy turkey as nobody likes it here but I've just served the rest of the beef and gammon.
We're all fine.

I’m pretty strict about food hygiene but believe the turkey should be fine. It would have been very hot to begin with, so would have taken ages to cool down anyway. My MIL used to keep the turkey out in an unheated room as she didn’t have space in the fridge. Our turkey crown made its way into the fridge about 8 hours after cooking.

Im not a fan of cooked food in the fridge, like meat, curry, chillie. I grew up to leave it in the pan with a lid on

It's not necessarily the days being used after. It's the lack of being in the fridge for nearly 12 hours
I'm early 30's

I'd be more amazed if it was in the fridge any sooner.

Turkey is massive; takes ages to cool; putting it in the fridge before it had cooled would be way more of an issue.

Growing up no-one I knew would put it in the fridge till at least the end of 26th, when it was stripped from the carcass. Completely fine.

(Now there were some houses that took this to extremes & it would be sitting out sir the best part of a week, eh, no!)

In terms of eating, regardless of fridge storage, I think 3 days is the max it's really ok for. I always bag up & freeze remainders on 27th.

You know the fridge isn’t like a magic anti bacteria thing right? It just slows bacterial growth. That’s why it’s suggested to put things in the fridge, so they keep longer than they would out of it.

‘Longer’ is a personal choice- for me that means 3/4 days as opposed to the 1/2 out of the fridge Id allow for cooked meat. For my husband…. He doesn’t blink at 7 but I suspect he’d go longer if given the option….

My kitchen is over 20C in winter. Much warmer than a fridge.

My husband picked ours up on the 23rd. No room in the fridge so it stayed in the garage until it was cooked on Xmas day. We are still eating the leftovers and will continue to do so until it goes off. No one has been ill.

Americans seem to think the limit is 2 hours (there are meals that last longer than that) , with a stretch to 4 hours .

I would think 12 hours was a bit of a stretch , especially in a hot/warm environment, but then again it's a game of luck too. Not only if bacteria develops, but what type, how it manifests , how long after eating it, how your body reacts to it etc.
