Period pants going a bit whiffy

Have had mine less than a year. High quality modi body ones. They dont have an odour straight out of the wash but do seem to have one within a few hours of wearing. Anyone else had this? How do i combat? Cant afford a new set every year!

I've had this problem (I thought I was the only one 🤣) and I think it's because I was using non bio because the kids have sensitive skin.
I switched to bio just for my underwear and it no longer smells.

thedementedelf · 29/12/2023 14:51

@Poinsettiasarevile You need to wash them at 60°, bio washing power and no fabric softner. Mine did the same thing.

CissOff · 29/12/2023 14:53

You definitely need bio washing powder and some dettol laundry cleanser now and again.

I have this - have very light/infrequent bleeding so not had heavy wear. They smell completely fine and clean after washing but after a few hours of wear they smell a bit funky. I'll try soaking in bicarb every so often. We have eczema sufferers so always use non-bio.

cloudtree · 29/12/2023 15:04

Yep same here. I have a coil and don’t bleed but I do tumble dry. I think it’s that

wutheringkites · 29/12/2023 15:22

I have this issue sometimes too. I add white vinegar to the wash and that seems to help.

Poinsettiasarevile · 29/12/2023 18:34

Sounds like bio washing powder and vinegar in the rinse water is the way to go.

I dry on a heated airer or outside in sunnier times.

Good to know not just me.

Are you reusing the same pairs during the cycle (after washing obviously)? If so that could mean they've been used to much they're coming to the end of their use. I think modibodi say they are typically optimal for 12 cycles

DaisyDando · 29/12/2023 18:50

My first ever pair were Modibodi and they fell apart after a few months. But I don’t think I was following the washing instructions perfectly. I find M&S ones cheaper and cheerful and do the job. They are not glamorous - but that would be my choice anyway.

Chipsahoy · 29/12/2023 19:41

Had the same issue with my mobodi ones. No issues with wuka or cheeky.
You aren’t supposed to wash on high temps. Just assume the mobodi are a bit shite as also have holes in some of the pairs too. No issues with my other brands

ZZGirl · 29/12/2023 19:43

I have sainsbury ones and they say they're good for 50 washes

Autumn1990 · 29/12/2023 19:45

I’ve used reusable pads for years and I always rinse in cold water until the water runs clear, wash immediately and then get the dry. Any soaking or not washing all the blood out results in a smell

Waitingfordoggo · 29/12/2023 19:49

I have some from M&S and some from Sainsburys. I rarely rinse them first and just shove them straight in the machine- usually with gym kit and other underwear. I wash them at 40° with bio washing liquid and Dettol sanitiser. I dry them either outside or on an airer next to dehumidifier. Have occasionally tumble dried them. No issues or smells at all with any of them.

RockCrushesLizard · 29/12/2023 19:50

This happens to me every few months, then I chuck them in with some dettol laundry sanitiser and it sorts them out again.
I don't like to boil/hot wash, as the instructions say no...

decemberwasshit · 29/12/2023 19:50

@Poinsettiasarevile I have the same issue as you but I was too embarrassed to ask on here 🤣 . At least I know it's not just me now. Mine are M&S and really smell within a few hours of wearing. But despite all the posters above I don't think it's to do with how I wash them. They smell fine when I put them on! I also don't think it's me down there because my normal pants don't smell like that, nor do sanitary towels. I think it's to do with the synthetic material that period pants are made from? That's all I can think of.

3WildOnes · 29/12/2023 20:03

I would use bio powder and dettol laundry cleaner. Occasionally my running clothes get a bit stinky and dettol always solves the problem.

auntiesatthere · 29/12/2023 20:08

Poinsettiasarevile · 28/12/2023 19:44

Just me the smelly cunt then. Fab.

😂😂😂 sorry op no advice but this made me laugh

Papillon23 · 29/12/2023 20:28

Don't use hot water if you're using bio washing powder. It uses proteins that digest the dirt a s they degrade at high temperatures.

I use Dettol laundry solution or the own brand equivalent for things like smelly gym wear and it's pretty effective.

Shouldershoulder · 29/12/2023 20:34

They dont have an odour straight out of the wash but do seem to have one within a few hours of wearing

Do you need to change more often?

Balloonhearts · 29/12/2023 21:14

Yeah it's the washing powder. You need biological washing stuff.

mynewusername2023 · 29/12/2023 21:22

Are you rinsing them immediately after washing or just before you do a load?

I have these and the instructions say to rinse them immediately after wear and then wash at 30 degrees. No softener and do not tumble dry or dry directly on a radiator.

mynewusername2023 · 29/12/2023 21:24

I'd add that I've had some of my Modi bodi ones for almost 4 years and they are only now showing signs of wear but it's more the stitching not the gusset area.
