I didn't seem to catch anything over the Christmas period really and wondered if you could recommend me the best thing you watched?

I did watch When Roald met Beatrice (bit dull) so maybe something a little more exciting

There was NOTHING good on!

Though I have recorded Bbc2 tonight. Best chart hits 2023. Lol .

Darklane · 28/12/2023 18:54

I think it’s been the worst ever tv schedule. Ended up watching things I’d recorded earlier in the year. There were lots of repeats & old films that have been on umpty times before. Only things I found ok were the All Creatures Great &Small Christmas special, Strictly Christmas special & the new Vera set on Lindisfarne.
Honestly you didn’t miss much.

Oh yes the new Vera was quite good.

CarolDunne · 28/12/2023 19:00

Bbc has a two part Agatha Christie

RolyPolyBatFacedGirl · 28/12/2023 19:02

Well this is rather depressing! I thought I must have missed loads!!

'Charles III The Coronation Year' was quite interesting - on I-player.

My DH enjoyed Tabby McCat.

LancashireSquirrel · 28/12/2023 19:04

If you haven't seen it from a few years ago, Guy Pierce was in a new version of A Christmas Carol. It was on BBC, three parts. It's a bit dark and pretty intense but a good watch!

PermanentTemporary · 28/12/2023 19:05

Dp and I really enjoyed Lot 249 on BBC but it's firmly in our sweet spot.

Likewise Caroline Aherne Queen of Comedy was lovely (a repeat?)

And we finally watched the whole of the Ipcress File. Great film.

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 28/12/2023 19:09

It was terrible. We were transported back to the 70's with old movies and the two Ronnie's plus Morecombe and Wise.

Dr Who was crap

Christmas TV has not changed since I was little and I'm 37. WHY?

MissyB1 · 28/12/2023 19:10

Mog’s Christmas
All Creatures Great and Small
Murder is easy (Two parter BBC)

That was literally it 🙁

Endeavormorse · 28/12/2023 19:15

Death in paradise, beyond paradise, and Vera. Bugger all else

purser25 · 28/12/2023 19:15

Mogs Christmas Tabby McTat when I get some time to myself will watch all the midwife forgot to record Charles a Coronation year

Blumarine · 28/12/2023 19:16

There is bugger all on the telly! I watched BBC2 Agatha Christie last night and Lot no.249 also on BBC2. Plus the Doctor Who Christmas special. ITV has released a series called The Winter King. The kids enjoyed Tabby McTat on BBC1.

Everything else was rubbish reality tv and repeats from a decade ago. BBC1 had Antiques Roadshow in the prime 7pm slot on Christmas Eve! BBC2 had a programme about hotels and a film from 43 years ago. Carol singing on ITV and baking on C4. Not a single new movie anywhere. Absolute bollocks.

PinkFrogss · 28/12/2023 19:16

I enjoyed doctor who, murder is easy, and ghosts.

GellerYeller · 28/12/2023 19:22

@MyLadyTheKingsMother Yes to this!!!!
No build up in the preceding weeks, no Christmas specials other than stuff that’s on regularly (Strictly, yawn. Mrs Brown, AGAIN!).
I realise there’s streaming to compete with, but it would have been nice to have an old favourite return for a one off stand alone special like they did with Gavin and Stacey and Motherland in recent years.

Dam Busters was on yesterday. It’s so old that it’s black and white and all the cast are dead. What makes them think anyone wants to see it at Christmas? I didn’t want to watch it 40 years ago and I certainly don’t want to watch it now. It’s just pure laziness and unwillingness to spend any money on new tv shows.

colouringindoors · 28/12/2023 19:24

Ghosts
Beyond Paradise
Christmas pottery throwdown
Mogs Christmas

But you're right Christmas telly these days is sh*te.

I think that the way in which people watch television is changing. Gone are the days when the entire population settled down to watch dirty Den hand the divorce papers to Angie, or to watch Angela Rippon doing her high kicks on Morecambe and Wise.

There is now so much choice and, because of the plethora of streaming services available, hardly any need for most people to watch live TV at all these days.

I don't think it will be very long before broadcast television becomes obsolete and verything will be available online only.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/12/2023 19:25

Ghosts

UsingChangeofName · 28/12/2023 19:26

Well I enjoy things like Carols from Kings, the service on Christmas morning, and Songs of Praise Christmas special, for a start.

Then, a bit of 'easy watching' - Beyond Paradise and Call the Midwife.
I enjoyed both Tom Jones at 80 and Max Boyce at 80. Also the Caroline Aherne programme and I enjoyed re-watching the Gavin and Stacy Christmas special from a few years ago.
Then we've picked up a few classic films.

Yes - I read the other day that the Christmas episode of Coronation Street didn't even make the top 10 - at one time it would have been up there with the monarch's speech.

I thought Dr. Who was bloody excellent.

GellerYeller · 28/12/2023 19:34

@Blumarine We must have missed Dambusters, but my DH got through Escape to Victory, The Battle of Britain and A Bridge Too Far in short order. The same films my DF would have put on when I was young. 🤦‍♀️

moretea · 28/12/2023 19:36

Tabby McTat and Ghosts were a joy. Really didn't watch anything else, was hoping for another Detectorists.
