I didn't seem to catch anything over the Christmas period really and wondered if you could recommend me the best thing you watched?

I did watch When Roald met Beatrice (bit dull) so maybe something a little more exciting

We don't normally watch much telly at Christmas but the things I enjoyed this year were the Hairy bikers Christmas cooking show, was quite emotional following Dave's cancer diagnosis and handled very well. Nigella's Amsterdam Christmas was very Nigella. We watched the Dr Who Christmas special which I thought was good and we are disappointed we have to wait until May. And Ghosts, what a beautiful way to end one of my favourite series of the last year, I had a good old messy happy cry.

Ghosts final episode (bittersweet), Lot 259 and Murder is Easy. All BBC so still available to watch.

Dr Who was ok, reminded me of a cross between the Muppets and Labyrinth.

Talking Pictures (Freeview) showed all the ghost stories for Christmas which was good if you like that sort of thing, and we rewatched Inside No. 9 Bones of St Nicholas on iPlayer.

I thought Dr. Who was bloody excellent.

It was terrible. Baby eating goblins in a flying ship? Dr who is scifi nor fantasy.

Really?
There’s lots of crossover. I don’t understand such rigidity that if something (especially something as fluid as Dr. Who) doesn’t fall exactly into genre it’s rubbish. It was smart, witty, fast moving and had good characterisation.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 28/12/2023 20:52

Ghosts and Call The Midwife. I liked Vera and am part way through Murder Is Easy. I also liked Mad About The Boy, about Noel Coward and the Mark Gatiss ghost story.

But I have to agree that Christmas TV this year hasn't been great. Last year was much better.

whiteboardking · 28/12/2023 23:49

It was awful. As someone else said tons of old rubbish shown a million times before. I'm in my 50s and have zero interest in movies from the 50/60/70/80/90s

ALongHardWinter · 29/12/2023 01:35

I watched the sum total of 2 programmes this year. Vera, and Call the Midwife. Never known such an awful year for Christmas TV.

Britpopbaby · 29/12/2023 01:43

@OrganicCamomileTea Couldn’t agree more! It’s like terrestrial TV has given up. I normally like to watch a good musical or two on BBC2 on Christmas day but alas there weren’t any. It should be film after film with terrestrial film premiers on the main three days of Christmas but nothing. Very disappointing.

I'm a similar age but I love old films. However, I can see them any time of the year any time I want and I would have liked something new to see.

KievLoverTwo · 29/12/2023 02:31

Err. Well there is an interesting documentary about Noel Coward on iPlayer and North by NorthWest which I love.

I think I might have found the non musical Oliver on Freevee or somewhere. Santa Claus and Home Alone are lurking around on some streaming service or another.

Couldn't tell you what was on because it was all bad. I ended up watching all the Narnia films then the Alice ones (the one that came after Burton's offering is FAR superior).

If you want to pay to watch something gritty, dark and very funny, I highly recommend Slow Horses starting Gary Oldman on Apple TV. They just finished airing the 3rd season. Or use a seven day free trial.

Apparently itvx is usually really good for films, if you can get their obnoxious, buggy app to work, that is.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 29/12/2023 02:34

Call the Midwife
Mad about the Boy (about Noel Coward)
Murder is Easy - Agatha Christie
Why didn't they ask Evans? - Agatha Christie

I'm also watching the re-run of Downton Abbey - just to enjoy the Dowager Duchess' wonderful one liners.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 29/12/2023 02:36

@KievLoverTwo

We loved North by North West too. A fantastic film.

justjuggling · 29/12/2023 02:43

I enjoyed Call the Midwife and my DDs watched Ghosts.

WavingCatsandDogs · 29/12/2023 02:45

Morecambe and Wise. Same old recycled stuff. My heart sinks - move on BBC!

everymirror · 29/12/2023 02:56

BBC don't want to spend money on new shows, yet they spend millions on sets for garbage like eastenders... so they keep showing the same bloody programmes on rotation.. and resurrecting dead comedy
