Do you enjoy driving?

Do you think you're a good driver?

We've spent quite a lot of time on the roads over the past week. Seen some spectacularly bad driving going on.

Last question - who is the better driver, you or your other half 😈
(if you have one obviously)

I don’t like driving it’s a necessity. For me it’s other road users who stress me out too much, I’m confident in my own abilities quite happy pooling along but then you get aggressive arseholes speeding, tailgating, switching lanes etc just stresses me out. Driving st night and bad weather doesn’t bother me too much.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 29/12/2023 00:25

I think I’m quite good. I enjoy it mostly but I’ve had an awful drive tonight in awful conditions on unlit motorways which is the most scared I have been behind the wheel in a long time.

I think I am better than my oh in some respects but he is better than me in others so probably pretty equal overall

I like driving in the day, less so at night these days but I’ll do it.

I’m a much better driver than DH, he drives me mad with his shite driving.

I love driving so try not to do it during the day. Too many years about.

I’ve an advanced licence and a racing licence so probably better than the average driver. All of my cars are highly powerful and modified so I don’t sit behind dawdlers for long.

Yeh I like driving, good thing as I commute 50-mile+ round trip and also drive for a few freelance gigs, plus my hobby means I often drive quite a way at weekends (trains not usually practicable sadly).

I'm not a bad driver, a bit cautious maybe. My car is small which goads people in Audis and Mercs into overtaking.

Dh is an ok driver unless he is angry or in a hurry when he goes far too fast. Also he revs up my car far too much which annoys me. So I think I’m better tbh. I’m also ace at parking.

In nearly 40 years of driving I’ve had one speeding ticket and two minor accidents (one on black ice) so not too bad.

It stresses me to see people reversing out of spaces, especially in shopping centre car parks and there's children on the loose! So much easier and safer to reverse in and drive out.

It's not convenient for me to reverse in and have hampered access to the boot.

Tescos02 · 29/12/2023 01:33

a friend i know drives but puzzles me, they use google maps to see traffic buildup on their route but then if google shows its very busy they then ignore google to then admit they were stuck in the traffic. its like why look it up ?

JaneIves · 29/12/2023 02:08

I love driving, I actually find it quite relaxing. Until I hit the M25, which I have to use daily for my commute.
Absolutely baffles me why some drivers are utterly useless at lane control and spatial awareness.

I'll add that I've been a blue light response driver for nearly 25 years so, yeah, I think I'm an excellent driver!

PiggieWig · 29/12/2023 02:20

I love driving. My favourite is country roads, on a sunny day with the roof down. I don’t have a care in the world. I’ve been driving more than 30 years without incident - a couple of speeding fines where I’ve mistaken a 40 for a 50 but never bumped into anything. I think I’m a decent driver and my parking skills are ace. It’s one of the few things I’m truly confident at.

tobee · 29/12/2023 02:29

I love driving and love the sense of freedom it gives me.

Dh and I are probably as good as each other. We are both happy to drive or be a passenger. The only thing that's different is he knows how to get around traffic jams more than me. Knows a detour better than me. I tend to follow the satnav a bit too slavishly.

Blanketpolicy · 29/12/2023 02:29

I enjoy driving if traffic and weather is ok, I can put some music on and just go. I purposely drive to work off peak times and find it lets me wind down. I wouldnt drive for the sake of driving, it is a means of getting somewhere so wouldnt say I love it.

I am, maybe was, a good driver. 25+ years without any accidents and very rarely have any "incidents" when driving. I am calm and composed when driving and dont let other drivers irritate me. But in my mid 50s now I feel my confidence dipping, especially in dark /bad weather, probably due to my eyes aging and sometimes finding bright head lights and glare difficult.

Dh is probably a more confident driver, but I think I am safer. Imo he drives too close to the car in front and it is a bit of a sticking point between us. I think he is lucky not to have had a bump. He also lets other drivers wind him up which is not safe either.

HelpMeGetThrough · 29/12/2023 06:19

I guess I'm pretty good, safe driver.

I've been driving for 35 years and I did the RoSPA advanced driver training and got gold on my test. My tutor was an ex police driver and so was my examiner. I also did the advanced tutor/observer training and have helped several to prepare for their advanced test. You re-test with RoSPA every three years.

I do enjoy driving and love long journeys. Last one I did was before Xmas, getting eldest from Uni in London, up and back in a day, so about 700 miles.

Am I a better driver than my OH? More confident I'd say, as I've done a lot more driving, but better? No matter how good we think we are, we all have our faults.

SinnerBoy · 29/12/2023 06:28

Yes, that's true and if you go out for a drive and think you've been faultless, then you're not very aware.

kitsuneghost · 29/12/2023 12:03

@DecidedlyAverage
Perhaps you should learn to park forward like a boss too.
You should be able to do both without knocking over loose children
Even when reverse parking you get families walking behind you as you are about to go in just as much as when you are reversing out.

DappledThings · 29/12/2023 12:44

I love it. Don't get to do as much solo as I'd like. Twice this year I've had the opportunity for a few days away where it's been 3-4 hours each way. I've looked forward to it and enjoyed it. Caught up on hours of podcasts.

Long drives we always share it equally. Short trips DH probably does do more because I let him. We have two cars but neither is his or mine, both are equally ours.
