Do you enjoy driving?

Do you think you're a good driver?

We've spent quite a lot of time on the roads over the past week. Seen some spectacularly bad driving going on.

Last question - who is the better driver, you or your other half 😈
(if you have one obviously)

I quite like driving, especially medium length drives. Long enough to listen to an audio book, not so long that I need to stop for a wee. I'm less fond of school run, heavy traffic type of driving.

This time of year usually has especially bad driving, I think partly because a lot of people are visiting family that they only see infrequently or going places they don't know well for other reasons. So they are lost, trying to find the right turning, looking at the sat-nav map and not able to pay as much attention to the road as they usually would.

ThreeRingCircus · 28/12/2023 13:16

DH is a more confident driver than I am and enjoys driving, but drives more aggressively which isn't always a good thing. He is better with driving long distances than I am, I find after more than about 2 hours of motorway driving I get bored and fed up.

I don't particularly like driving, it's a means to an end for me and I dislike city centre driving if I don't know where I'm going/what lane to be in. I see some absolutely diabolical driving though so think I'm fine and competent.

I do love the freedom it gives me. I can drive and have my own car so if I want to get up and drive to the coast I can, or if a family member needed me in an emergency I would jump in the car and go. I have friends and some family that don't drive and it's so limiting for them.

yikesanotherbooboo · 28/12/2023 13:21

I hate driving and am not very good at it. I have deskilled on motorways over the years and although I drive quite a lot on a day to day basis or on A roads I do dread having to get on and off the M25 and avoid it if I can.

OCaledonia · 28/12/2023 13:22

I quite enjoy driving but not so much in the dark. I do love it when it's chucking down with rain and I'm cocooned in my warm car.

@DecidedlyAverage the reason I drive into a space at the supermarket is for easy access to the boot with the trolley. Otherwise I do reverse into spaces and I'm brilliant at parking (my own car anyway, not so much dh's works van)

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 28/12/2023 13:24

I quite like driving. Less so when I'm going somewhere new. Not because I can't do it, just because there's more to focus on with directions etc. I find motorway driving very dull.

DH can't drive due to medical issues so I do all the driving.

OCaledonia · 28/12/2023 13:24

DH moans more about other road users, I'm more chilled these days. We're probably both quite safe drivers but DH is easily distracted and often stalls my car 😂

Lbd · 28/12/2023 13:25

Dh is defs the better driver, I only passed a month or two ago and in a rural area, hoping to do some pass plus lessons in a city to cover big roundabouts, dual carriageways etc in the new year. I do enjoy it, but defs need more experience in less rural places!

Princesspollyyy · 28/12/2023 13:25

I love driving. I've been driving 28 years and never had an accident. I see some terrible driving, mostly from elderly drivers whose reaction times are altered due to age.

My husband is also a great driver, never had an accident and he's been driving longer than me. I'd say we are about the same.

muddyford · 28/12/2023 13:25

I love it. DH no longer drives so it's all mine, mine, mine!

muddyford · 28/12/2023 13:28

My instructor was an ex-police instructor and gave me so much.

tallsmallmum · 28/12/2023 13:30

No, like others I like the freedom and having a car and sometimes I like tight parking but I don't like driving itself

DocOck · 28/12/2023 13:32

I like driving if there is nobody else on the roads.

verrymerryberry · 28/12/2023 13:37

I do love driving but I hate being tailgated which seem to be on the rise.

I really don't get it it's so dangerous and saves no time.

DecidedlyAverage · 28/12/2023 17:42

@verrymerryberry oh yes, that's definitely one of my pet hates on the roads!
And what's with people who don't indicate? I find it so arrogant, and downright dangerous.
We've got one more 2hr drive home later on today, and then hopefully that's us done for a while!
Back to "normal" driving - school runs, work, clubs etc.

I enjoy the freedom of driving but I wouldn't ever just "go for a drive" for the fun of it. DH is probably a better driver but he's also been driving for much longer and drives much more than I do.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 28/12/2023 23:18

Comfortable driving on roads I know, however I dislike driving in the dark no matter how familiar the roads are. Also dislike driving in heavy rain, fog, snow and ice. OH is a much more confident driver than I am. However he is a HGV driver so is used to driving hundreds of miles in any weather condition.

AlwaysGinPlease · 28/12/2023 23:24

I like driving when I know where I am and it helps that I absolutely love my car. I dislike driving long journeys. DH always drives she we go out together. That makes us both happy 😆

GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas · 28/12/2023 23:26

I don’t like driving and don’t do it much so I’m medium-skilled.

I feel like I’m safe and competent but I’m not good.

I absolutely love the freedom and opportunities it gives me though. I still feel chuffed when I drive my kids somewhere we couldn’t go by public transport and we have a great time.

My OH is a good driver but imo drives too fast.

SwedishEdith · 28/12/2023 23:31

Love driving. I think I'm a better driver than my partner. Not put off by going somewhere I've never been before but drive much less than I used to because of work/life changes. Can't see the appeal of driverless cars.

kitsuneghost · 28/12/2023 23:48

I don't mind driving. Find it quite relaxing.
I have good points (park well, know how to drive in severe weather, good at keeping calm)
I also have bad points (drive quite slowly but only to save petrol, can drive faster quite happy if needed and I refuse to be bullied
I would say OH is better motorway and I am better city.

UsingChangeofName · 29/12/2023 00:13

I neither enjoy nor dislike driving. It’s just functional.

This is me. It is just a functional thing I do - like having a shower - a means to an end.
If we go somewhere together, dh drives, as he enjoys driving, and I am 'meh' about it, so it makes sense. I am also more than happy (on a long journey) to catch up on some zzzz which he can't do. Or sometimes I knit or do one of those boring but useful tasks like deleting things from my phone. He doesn't know how to do anything in the passenger seat other than watch the road - he can't 'switch off' like I can.

I would say I am a good driver. My NCD thinks so anyway.

doriangraybutimthepaintingintheattic · 29/12/2023 00:18

I drive for work 1-200 miles a day. I've just come back from an airport run (not work) and the standard of driving was awful. I drove for miles in lane one while people were going slower than me in lane 3 and 4. I set cruise control to 73 and I zoomed past them. I honestly thought about writing a letter to my MP/rishi to ask what they're doing about it as it is extremely poor.

I love driving but I get a bit aggressive around the fools. I've put a lot of work in but after 6 hours on the road, the last one I was a dick also. Stuff like flashing people to move over rather than overtake or moving in aggressively and going straight back to lane one. It's rare but does happen.

I'm much better than DP and I do all the driving.

3luckystars · 29/12/2023 00:22

I love driving and love parking. I think I’m good but I also have made mistakes.

I think there should be retraining every year or two and licences should not just be reissued every 10 years without a retest.

it mad to think you can pass a driving test in Ireland at 18 and have a licence until you are 98 years old and never take another test in 80 years.

Teenagersscarethelivinshitoutofme · 29/12/2023 00:22

I love driving, always have. Motorway driving is my favourite, long roads, good music, sweets, coffee, happy days. I'm spectacularly fucked off with the rise in incompetent fuckwits on motorways who sit in the 3rd lane doing 69. The number of people who do not know how to drive on motorways is terrifying.

doriangraybutimthepaintingintheattic · 29/12/2023 00:23

I am an awful passenger and avoid it at all costs.

I've had over three hours on my own in the car today so my throat is quite sore from all the singing. That was the biggest thing I missed over Covid, my daily commute to destress.
