Is there reliable evidence of Biden's cognitive impairment?

I've seen quite a fews videos of Biden's confusion and physical frailty that make me question his cognitive abilities. He seems to have moments of senility and confusion that are worrying. I was chatting to a friend about this and she said that all these videos are made up by Trump supporters. I've tried searching but it's hard to find "evidence" from objective sources. Just wondering if I've been taken in by Trumpists or if there really is objective evidence from sources that aren't wildly biased?!

I don't know a lot about US politics. Hate Trump but had also come to conclusion that Biden isn't fit to be president. Interested to find out what the real truth is about Biden's health.

I don't think AI is going to steal my vote. I've got zero confidence in any political party. I've made my decision how I will be voting based on my own instinct about which is the least worst option. It will always be a massive compromise but my conscience is the only thing on life that I can always count on. I hope people can do likewise and get us out of the mire of country is in.

ETA I know this is about Biden v Trump in US but my comments apply globally, to whichever country is going through elections - people seem to have lost the ability to make their own decision and rely on the dross and cesspits of SM, which is pretty damn depressing.

Trump does seem to be performing quite well (even though he is despicable!)

It's best stick to relatively trustworthy news sources like the BBC. If they had evidence of a significant impairment they would have covered it, but they haven't.

Thanks for the laugh! I suppose in your favour you did say “relatively”.

What makes you think they’d have covered Biden’s clear inability “if they had evidence”? FGS wake up.

This is an election not a court of law. Evidence (or the lack of it) is irrelevant. Voter perception is all that matters regardless of what it is based on.

Yes! And people like that are why we are still here now. It should be undeniable to everyone that he has age related cognitive decline. This was obvious last year but the Democrats did not act? Why? Loyalty to their President? Not wanting to seem "ageist" for stating the blinking obvious? Truly believing that it's Republican hype and he's fine?

There's an article in the economist that reckons if the democrats decided to go with another candidate that individual would have 10 WEEKS to campaign after their nomination before the election. It's madness. How is it possible that of all the capable, intelligent people in the US it's old Don and Joe standing there making fools of themselves?

I don't think there is any sign he is entering dementia or anything, but any older person, even a very together one, will be more vague and forgetful than someone younger. My parents are in their mid 70s and are definitely less 'sharp' than they were 10 years ago, which is only to be expected. It isn't ideal to have a President as old as Biden, but I don't think there's any sign it's a terrible liability and if he were unable to carry on, he'd be replaced by someone sensible. Which is more than you can say would happen if it were Trump becoming unfit.

PenguinBall · 29/06/2024 15:31

@Echobelly the number one thing he's got to do (literally the only thing that matters) is win the election. Whether he's capable of doing the actual job is a moot point right now. Personally I believe his cognitive impairment is enough of a liability that it will cost him the election.

AhBiscuits · 29/06/2024 15:59

What a shitshow having to choose between those two, it's like having to choose which disease you'd prefer to die from.

Crankymonkey · 29/06/2024 16:08

It’s obvious that Biden is impaired, but I don’t think any of us are fit to assess how bad it is. I wonder why nobody ever seems to think that one step further. If he is unable to carry out the job then who is effectively making all of the decisions in the background. If I was a voter that uncertainty would make me more than uneasy.

QuestionableMouse · 29/06/2024 16:09

He has a lifelong stutter and struggles with public speaking because of it. That's what you're seeing, not some cognitive impairment.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 29/06/2024 16:20

There's only three years between Biden and Trump yet Biden seems much more of an old man due to his spinal arthritis and his stutter, which affects his public speaking. When he's dealing with his stutter, he closes his eyes and stop talking - he doesn't fill while he tries to think what to say. Mentally I think he's pretty sharp, but he's old and in pain. My dad's the same age and wouldn't be able to a fraction of what Joe Biden does, day in, day out.

PenguinBall · 29/06/2024 16:21

@QuestionableMouse maybe, but does the electorate believe that?

So why the enormous difference between now and five or six years ago? Come on. You can’t watch clips from the debate and really believe what you’re saying here

Biscuithelp · 29/06/2024 19:07

The point for me is the choice is not Biden NOW. It’s Biden in 4 years, when he will still have the nuclear codes and be in charge of the economy. If he’s like this now what will he be like then?
