Gas cooker or induction cooker

secular37 · 26/12/2023 19:57

Need a cooker ASAP.

Had an electric for years which was so bad and glad that it's now stop working.

I have been considering going back to Gas (my mum had one for years- which I hated as the cleaning was immense, so that has always put me off of Gas cookers). But recently came across induction where some users on here have said it best. However, most of these are hobs, there are not many free standing induction cookers out there. If so, could anyone tell me of good brands?

Important question- should I go for an indication or a gas free stand cooker.

Ideally you’d have a gas oven with induction hob. I cooked on gas this week fuck me a pan of water took so much longer to boil.

secular37 · 26/12/2023 20:08

Thanks @FormerlyPathologicallyHappy

But would that defeat the purpose of the environmental risks with gas.

What are the risks of gas? Gas leaks in the house?

Ha now I'd go the other way than @FormerlyPathologicallyHappy - gas hob and electric oven. I find an electric oven cooks a bit more evenly, especially when baking. However, most of my experience of gas ovens was my landlords old decrepit thing you had to crawl in to light (how it passed its gas safety all those years I'll never know!). I have used a better and more modern more recently and it was much better.

I do like induction hobs - so easy to clean, quick, precise heat and very safe - but what I like about gas hobs is you can boil a pan of water for hot drinks, washing and hot water bottles in the event of a power cut. But maybe that's not the best reason to go for gas! I have had quite a few power cuts though 😂

@FormerlyPathologicallyHappy

More to do with the emissions in the air.

Thanks.

Seen this. But their cookers are just not...attractive and would not go with my kitchen.

Oh I see, ao.com do cookers. There’s few specialist shops these days unless you want an aga or high end range.

I’m on induction hob number 3. Bastard things might be good to cook on but they do not last long and god they are temperamental. My current one isn’t very old and is going to be chucked in the bin very shortly!

My friend’s miele induction (which cost a bomb) packed it in after 7 years so I’m not sure their reliability and longevity has anything to do with price.

tenbob · 26/12/2023 20:35

What style of kitchen, and what’s your budget?

We switched from gas to induction a couple of years ago, and it’s the best thing we did!

Not that long ago, I ruled out a house move on the basis that it didn’t have mains gas and I couldn’t live without a gas hob - that’s how wedded I was to cooking on gas!

but modern induction is really great, I’m so glad we have one

We have a slightly retro style Kitchen.

It's so hard to know which one to buy sigh

I would have a gas hob and electric oven by choice.
But, listening to others, we had a spectacularly bad induction hob in a rented house, but I would be seriously reluctant to buy one. It had 2 temperatures - burn it or warm it slightly, the controls were horriffic to use - took about 5 goes to switch a ring on, it randomly switched itself off, and beeped at you if you did something it didn't like - such as move the pan slightly.
I HATED that hob.

Sorry. Budget is £1,000...

We got a freestanding induction range earlier this year and I love it. I'd never cooked on an induction hob before and was a bit nervous I'd made a bad choice but I really love it, it's so speedy! It's a rangemaster one. That and my boiling water tap and two things that I'm really happy I splashed out on when doing our kitchen

reluctantbrit · 26/12/2023 21:11

I grew up with a gas freestanding hob/oven. Hated the oven, loved the hob.

Then I moved to electric, hated the hob, loved the oven.

When I got a build-in kitchen, we opted for gas hob/electric oven. Best of both worlds - until we saw an induction hob.

We moved to induction 7 years ago and I don‘t miss my gas hob at all. I can still do all the things thanks to cast iron pan and wok which still works brilliantly.

It‘s faster, easy to clean (washing up liquid and hot water). But - it is a glass plate and we manage to break it by having a cupboard with glass spice jars above it, one fell down = broke the hob.

So you need to be a bit more careful but otherwise I won‘t go back to gas.

PurpleBugz · 26/12/2023 21:53

I hate induction. It is easier to clean but not nice to cook on. If you like to cook then I'd opt for gas

DirtyDuchess · 26/12/2023 22:06

Gas hob all day long. Induction hobs just don't heat up enough.

But what about the emissions... toxins in the air. My heart is saying Gas.

I love my Miele induction hob (so much easier to clean) but I miss my gas oven. If I wanted/needed to use a wok I would buy another arrangement. We have had a few self catering rentals over the years and I can see that some induction hobs are a bit underwhelming.

if you plan to spend a few hundred/thousand pounds on kitchen kit it is probably worth signing up to a trial Which subscription

Mumaway · 26/12/2023 22:18

Induction very quick and easy to clean but I'm super paranoid about scratching it all the time.

EmpressSoleil · 26/12/2023 22:22

I'm finally getting rid of our gas hob soon and I cannot wait! I am so sick of having to pull the whole thing apart to clean it. It's the bane of my life. With the induction hob it will be a quick wipe over and done. I am genuinely excited about it! I'm not a chef, I'm sure it will be adequate for the cooking I do.

parietal · 26/12/2023 22:45

Induction is great. IKEA do cheap good quality induction pans and that makes a big difference to how well it works

I'm pleased you've seen the benefits of induction as they're great but it is possible to have a gas hob when there's no mains gas. You get a simple adapter and run it off a bottle of LPG housed outside instead.
