Gas cooker or induction cooker

Need a cooker ASAP.

Had an electric for years which was so bad and glad that it's now stop working.

I have been considering going back to Gas (my mum had one for years- which I hated as the cleaning was immense, so that has always put me off of Gas cookers). But recently came across induction where some users on here have said it best. However, most of these are hobs, there are not many free standing induction cookers out there. If so, could anyone tell me of good brands?

Important question- should I go for an indication or a gas free stand cooker.

I'm pleased you've seen the benefits of induction as they're great but it is possible to have a gas hob when there's no mains gas. You get a simple adapter and run it off a bottle of LPG housed outside instead.

MIL has that set up and it’s nowhere near as good as mains gas

The pressure is so low compared to mains, it takes forever to cook pasta and it’s not even possible to cook a steak properly

I really rate Cannon freestanding cookers who became part of Hotpoint so I would recommend one of those freestanding induction+double oven models.
I've had gas cookers all my adult life but next time it will be induction. I just think it's more future proof.

I like to cook, dithered between gas/induction during a recent kitchen refit and went with induction. Very glad I did. For 90 percent of what I do it is just as good or better, and on environmental and health grounds there’s simply no argument. You should really only be using gas if you have a truly well-performing ventilation system, and most people don’t.

The cookers are beautiful but I don't think they have one in induction

I can’t get on with our induction. We spent £££’s on our Miele one, had it 8 years and no reliability issues. It is brilliant to put a pan of cold water on, and 10s later, it’s boiling, but leaves me wondering how long to boil eggs for. I love how easy it is to clean and it looks slick, DH who has worked as a chef thinks it’s amazing. I prefer gas. You need to be careful when you buy pans to be sure they work with induction.

TheDogsMother · 26/12/2023 23:33

@tenbob We had just moved from a mains gas area and we had this set up put in to run a big gas range cooker hob. I couldn't notice any difference to mains gas. I guess they can vary.

A lot of pans are induction safe now, even aluminium ones have a layer of steel inside them now. It only needs to be a ferrous metal.

I’m on induction hob number 3. Bastard things might be good to cook on but they do not last long and god they are temperamental. My current one isn’t very old and is going to be chucked in the bin very shortly!

My friend’s miele induction (which cost a bomb) packed it in after 7 years so I’m not sure their reliability and longevity has anything to do with price.

I've had a Bosch for 15 years, it's fantastic. Definitely not gas OP, it's so slow compared to induction.

secular37 · 27/12/2023 11:57

Thanks everyone. Most of the brand recommendations are for Hobs- but I am looking for an induction free standing cooker. Apart from AEG, there doesn't appear to be a good quality one.

Is this what you had in mind , a freestanding cooker with double oven and induction hob? They do exist and are quite space efficient. There's plenty of choice in your budget.

Obviously you said AEG in the OP, how about Stoves?

NigelHarmansNewWife · 27/12/2023 21:34

We have a Stoves Sterling electric induction range. Best we've had and I was fully wedded to gas hobs. Responsive, finely controllable and so easy to clean.

RomeoOscarXrayXray · 27/12/2023 22:38

Love our Ikea induction hob. SO fast! Easy to control. Safe for kids. More options where to place in kitchen. No particulates.

Induction is the best of both worlds. The speed and control of gas, the convenience of electric.

Even chefs are making the switch!

Copperoliverbear · 27/12/2023 22:53

I always have an electric oven and a gas hob so if any of them go off I still have something to cook with. X

NannyGythaOgg · 27/12/2023 23:09

Electric fan oven and definitely an induction hob. I loved gas for 40 years but would not go back to a gas hob now for anything.

RoseTulips2023 · 27/12/2023 23:20

We bought an induction a year ago as part of a kitchen refurb. We had a galley kitchen and now have a longish peninsula which I love. Because the peninsula is also used as a work top we needed the flat surface provided by an induction. Purely from a cooking perspective I would have preferred gas. I don't like the way it beeps at me - when I lift the pan off the heat to move the oil around the base and how it sometimes just turns off. Gas is much more flexible. It is easy to clean but I don't remember the gas hob being difficult. Foodie friends of mine wouldn't consider anything except gas because it gives them the control they need.

WildCherryBlossom · 28/12/2023 07:25

Following with interest. We are at the early planning stages of a kitchen refurb. My current preference is for electric fan ovens and gas hob. DH thinks it would be madness to go for gas as it's on its way out.

We currently have gas, I don't find it that tricky to clean. We use induction in a holiday place we go to each year and I struggle get the right heat levels, also things like the beeping that pp mentioned when you lift a pan to give it a swirl ate really annoying. However I accept those could be issues with the specific model / brand.

Interested to read everyone's opinions.

I hate induction. It is easier to clean but not nice to cook on. If you like to cook then I'd opt for gas

^This.
Where I live there is no gas we’d have to use calor gas cylinders which due the position of the cooker would not be easy to install. When I bought my home it came with a top of the range induction Rangemaster cooker. I agree it’s miles better than traditional electric hobs but I’d go back to gas in a heartbeat if could. It’s only saving grace as others have mentioned is that it’s easy to keep clean. My DS is a chef it’s no coincidence that they use professional kitchens use gas.
If you have gas available buy a gas top electric/fan oven.
