Coruisk · 26/12/2023 19:46

What's on your bucket list of things to see and do in the UK? Not just attractions but events? Some of mine are:

Last night of the proms
Wimbledon
Stonehenge and Avebury
Houses of parliament visit
Edinburgh festival
Up Helly Aa
St Kilda visit

I've not done all of these!! Anyone else care to contribute?

Im heading back home tomorrow, I live in Wiltshire, next to Avebury. Might have to pop over to Imber and show my Imber (labrador) the village he's named after!

ChicoryDip · 26/12/2023 21:07

Oh, also..

London to Inverness on a sleeper train.

Cattenberg · 26/12/2023 21:08

Places I’ve been (and enjoyed):

Titanic Exhibition in Belfast

The Edinburgh festival

Tintagel

Stonehenge and Avebury (not everyone “gets” Stonehenge, and compares it unfavourably to other places, such as Macchu Picchu. But Stonehenge is much, much older and appears to have astronomical significance).

The National Gallery in London

Dennis Severs’ House in London

Glastonbury (not the festival, but the strange little town, including the Tor and Chalice Well Gardens)

The beautiful train ride along the South Coast from Exeter and over the Tamar bridge into Cornwall

Isle of Lewis and Harris. We stayed in Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, went kayaking and visited the standing stones at Callanish, amongst other things. I throughly recommend it.

Durdle Dor and Lulworth Cove, Dorset - gorgeous

Places still on my list:

St Kilda

Lundy

Burgh Island

The West Highland Railway

BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir (a Hindu temple in London)

Coruisk · 26/12/2023 21:09

Is the Scotland route 66 the North Coast 500? I've done a lot of it, but not in one go. The Beleach na ba is memorable!!! Can also recommend the Mallaig train, steam train definitely the best option!

The Titanic exhibition in Belfast.

Seriously don't bother. It was so boring. However the SS Nomadic was amazing. www.titanicbelfast.com/explore/ss-nomadic/

Coruisk · 26/12/2023 21:14

Adding lots to my list! Callanish is v impressive, forgot to add on my recommendations.

St Kilda is very high on my list. Went to the outer Hebrides earlier this year. Sadly we were a week too early for the boat trip. It is quite pricey.

SENDhelp2023 · 26/12/2023 21:17

Glastonbury the town
Stonehenge

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/12/2023 21:18

St Michael's Mount
Lindisfarne
Anglesey
Orkney
Shetland
Staffa
John O Groats
Birmingham
Liverpool
Manchester
Sheffield
Newcastle
The Kelpies
The Angel of the North
North Coast 500.

Cattenberg · 26/12/2023 21:22

I think I’d have to save up for St Kilda!

I forgot to mention the Isle of Skye. I only visited briefly and didn’t see the Fairy Pools, but did see some amazing scenery, including waterfalls. Going past Eilean Donan castle on the way was the icing on the cake. It’s easy to take great photos there.

Coruisk · 26/12/2023 21:25

Skye is incredible - so many out of this world places to visit. See my user name! No wonder it's been a location for so many films.

St Kilda is v expensive and difficult to visit but I think you can volunteer with the national trust...

Ooh thanks for reminding me about Imber! Some of my favourite places I've been that haven't come up so far are:

The UNESCO WHS castles of North Wales (Caernarfon, Beaumaris, Conwy and my favourite, Harlech)

Orford Ness

Lindisfarne

Hiring a boat and travelling around the Norfolk broads

The Mappa Mundi in Hereford Cathedral

Kew Garden, RHS Wisley, Beth Chatto Garden

Seven sisters cliffs and cuckmere haven

The beaches on the north coast of Scotland and Sutherland and Caithness generally

I've been to Cheltenham twice. Got the winner at 40/1 in 1992 and the second at 66/1 in 2003...
I've sat on Kirstys bench too.

Sybila · 26/12/2023 21:32

The Mary Rose in Portsmouth - astonishing

reluctantbrit · 26/12/2023 21:32

I still try to find time to go to Skara Brae.

We did Stonehenge/Avebury, it is strange. It doesn‘t seem anything special but if you think about it, it totally is.

House of Parliament - yes, do it. They have a great children tour as well.

We did a boat trip to the seals in Norfolk, so great.

Scotland and the Stone of Scone and the Honours of Scotland

Fishbourne Roman Palace or any other Roman settlement. Civilisation lost so much when the Romans left.

Mairzydotes · 26/12/2023 21:35

Mother Shipton's cave
Forbidden corner
The aircraft museum where concord is
Shetland/ Orkney /Isle of Skye
The Cotswolds

I'd like to drive the Lands end / John o 'groats route

We went to Wales 2 years ago and visited the castles. I think Edward I would turn in his grave seeing the Welch dragon flag at his castles.
