question for landlords..would you allow a snake?

bit of a random question,
I know!
My eldest is hoping to move into a house share in the new year, but hasn't looked at specific options yet. She's got a good,
well paid permanent fulltime graduate job and is an ideal tenant/house sharer. She's got a 2 year old corn snake she loves to bits and wonders if landlords will
allow her to bring him or if she'll have to
leave him at home with us. I know
most landlords won't allow
cats and dogs and I totally get this (having
been a landlord myself many years back)
Would this be ok with you,
if you're a landlord?

Yeah. Dogs welcome too. The only thing I won't have are cats.

HollyFern1110 · 24/12/2023 16:11

Yes I would. A corn snake is very unlikely to cause damage.

Yes. I allow dogs too.

Yes, definitely.

My freeholder says no pets, so no.

I also wouldn’t house share with a snake, so that might limit options !

that's a really good point actually; hadn't thought of that!

Yes, I actually prefer pet owners as they tend to stay longer as it's hard to find a landlord who accepts them.

ErrolTheRednosedDragon · 24/12/2023 16:19

What are snakes (and other reptiles) fed on?

Hopingforahappierlife · 24/12/2023 16:34

Yes I would and my son has a royal python, they cause zero damage.

KinS24 · 24/12/2023 16:35

I have been a landlord and snake owner and would be fine. They just sit in their vivarium. What’s the problem?

mice. Dead, not alive.
(kept in a packet, inside a sealed box in the freezer)

I think taking the snake will significantly cut down the options. I can’t say as I’d have been keen to have a snake there in my flat sharing days, nor dead mice in the freezer frankly!

NowYouSee · 24/12/2023 16:44

Also does the snake need heating in a vivarium? Adds extra challenges for the electricity cost if costs are shared.

buckingmad · 24/12/2023 16:44

Yes one of my tenants has a snake. But I’d say yes to any pet as I have pets so feel it would be hypocritical if I didn’t!

GCAcademic · 24/12/2023 16:46

Don't know about the landlord, but there is no way I could live in a house with a snake. I'd have to move out if the landlord was allowing someone with a snake to move in.

beatrix1234 · 24/12/2023 16:47

It’s a house share, I would never allow a flatmate who owns a snake.

randomstress · 24/12/2023 16:49

I would be fine as a previous landlord but some of my dc wouldn't house share with a snake.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/12/2023 16:54

Quiet, no smell, no allergies. They're great. However, I worked for a company that didn't allow it because eeuuuuuwwwww. I advocated for them, got told o.

Setyoufree · 24/12/2023 16:56

Yep definitely. I'd be fine house sharing with it too but I think not everyone would be ok with sharing.

Gonkers · 24/12/2023 16:59

My tenants have a dog and a cat and I’d be fine with any animals at all.

crafty976 · 24/12/2023 17:09

thanks all.
Her idea is to get an offer of a place first and then ask about the snake and if fellow house
sharers don't want the snake,
she'll leave it here with us. She's only
moving 30 mins away so can
come home for snake
cuddles whenever she wants 🤣🐍

I thought landlords had to allow pets now.
I'd allow a snake and I have a soft spot for cats despite the amount of damage our last tenant's cat did to our house.

More important would be knowing the tenant would be responsible and considerate and fix any damage or additional wear and tear their pet caused. I can't imagine what damage a snake vivarium might do but does she need to discuss increased power bills with housemates if it's a house share?

SquashPenguin · 24/12/2023 17:29

My ex- landlord allowed me to keep snakes. No noise, no damage, no smell. I’d rather let a house to someone keeping reptiles than a smoker!

Crooklodge · 24/12/2023 17:31

Our landlord is a friend. We moved here with a cat, now have a dog and lizard too. He doesn't give a shiny shit
