Alexandra Palace

I need some advice mumsnetters. I've bought tickets to a gig in the Alexandra Palace in February for my teenage son and I. We live in Worcestershire. Can anyone recommend a cheap but decent hotel near to the venue and is it possible to get in to and park near that area or best to train (were travelling down on a Friday afternoon). Cheers

Hotels in Wood Green?

Bus will take you down after gig

Peepshowcreepshow · 23/12/2023 21:00

There is parking there but the queues to get out are insane, better doing public transport.

Helenahandkart · 23/12/2023 21:27

We parked there and it was pretty easy getting in and out. Bit of a queue to leave but not terrible.

GreatGateauxsby · 23/12/2023 21:31

Do not stay in Wood Green….

Transport out is pretty easy Lots of options…

TheFormidableMrsC · 23/12/2023 21:34

Well connected for public transport which would be easier I'd say. There is a Travel Lodge in Wood Green which is about a mile or so away. You may find a B&B in Muswell Hill or Crouch End.

TheFormidableMrsC · 23/12/2023 21:35

Or you could stay a bit further out. I'm in Stevenage and we have a couple of premier inns here. You can get a direct train to Ally Pally although it would be a stopper. It would be cheaper for accommodation though.

SerCrispin · 23/12/2023 21:37

Hotel in Muswell Hill, get an Uber.

HamstersAreMyLife · 23/12/2023 21:39

Defo wood green. I used to live there and there's either a travelodge or premier inn and you can get there by bus. How exciting! If you're making a weekend of it the joy of wood green is its easy to grab food/emergency stuff as it's effectively a high street but has fantastic transport links via bus and tube to get into central London if you want to do any touristy bits. I lived there 10 years and loved it

littlem133 · 23/12/2023 21:43

Wow. So many replies so quickly!! I've found a few nearby hotels but I'm scared they'll be bail hostels or something! (Personal experience). At least with travel lodges etc you know you're getting. Is Wood Green a decent place to take a teen for breakfast (I want him to think his mums coolGrinWink)

Don't stay in Wood Green. It's a shit hole and can be downright dangerous. There is nowhere cool for breakfast, unless you count 2 McDs within a few hundred yards.

Look for an air bnb in Ally pally/ Muswell Hill or Crouch End. You can easily get a bus up to Ally Pally, or walk and if you end up waking home after the gig you will be fine.

Bleepbloopbluurp · 23/12/2023 21:51

Plus, plenty of good places to eat out in both Muswell Hill and Crouch End

HamstersAreMyLife · 23/12/2023 22:09

We tend to head to one of the turkish cafes for breakfast when we go back about 3-4x a year, down by turnpike lane there's also a couple of nice indy cafes. I'm not a big breakfast eater but have primary age kids who always need food! Mussels hill and CE mentioned by others are lovely, more expensive but more posh cafes if that's your thing. I used to walk to CE most days when mine were babies but there are buses from WG too.

Don’t stay in Wood Green. It’s a shithole. I’m from there.

geoger · 23/12/2023 22:24

Avoid Wood Green. Find an air b and b in Muswell Hill or Crouch End

I agree I wouldn't want my child staying in Wood Green. I personally frequent this area and it's ok but can get a bit dicey.

I will disagree about breakfast though! It's got some good little cafes to eat at.

Agree with suggests of finding a b&b in Muswell Hill etc

Agreed.

Crouch end /muswell hill is a long walk or short bus ride and nice /cool/ sort of bohemian. Loads of nice restaurants and cafes.

I grew up knowing wood green well ... it is not for out of towners.

Charlie2121 · 24/12/2023 00:09

When I go to Ally Pally I stay at the Premier Inn in Welwyn Garden City. It’s miles cheaper than London hotels and well connected to AP.

It is 20 mins on a direct train to Alexandra Palace station from WGC. The hotel is about £50 per night and has free parking. WGC has quite a few nice places to eat out.

As other have said, avoid Wood Green.

NutellaNut · 24/12/2023 00:33

Premier Inn, New Southgate. Leave your car there and it’s under 10 mins direct to Alexandra Palace’s own train station.

kitsuneghost · 24/12/2023 00:49

You are better staying in muswell hill (saves the walk up the hill)
We stay at the Roseview. Slight negative is it is a 25 min walk from East finchley tube (but there are buses).
Do not stay at the national.

kitsuneghost · 24/12/2023 00:51

Crocodile cafe for breakfast

What utter BS. You clearly know nothing about the area! There are zillions of places to eat in Wood Green and new places opening up all the time.

Posts like these are just nonsense. When is the last time you have been in the area?

XelaM · 24/12/2023 01:04

As for Ally Pally... it has a car park and very easy to drive in/out so I don't really get why driving is discouraged on this thread.

Downright dangerous 🤣

It’s “fine”. A bit grubby but nothing worse than that. My kids commute via Wood Green every school day. I commute via Wood Green regularly.

The W3 runs through the park and Ally Pally also do a free bus for events that you can catch from Wood Green.

Those who live in Muswell Hill have to commute via Wood Green/Finsbury Park/Highgate station. Houses in Wood Green cost 600k+ - lots of middle class professionals live in N22!

Personally I’d prefer a travelodge/premier inn to a b&b. You know what you’re getting. N22 is the best for travel links and it will be easiest for you staying there as you have more options.

Lots of places for breakfast - chains like Pret and Costa or independent deli cafe places like Ezra’s or Charlie’s.

A mother will never be cool to a teenage son.
