I want to learn a hobby craft..

I spend a bit too much time on tech. If I’m not playing games, I’m browsing the internet so I want to try and learn something new. Which is easier to learn for a brand new beginner?

Crochet
Knitting
Needle felting

or can you suggest something easy?

Knitting is easy. Either watch some youtube videos or join a beginners class in the new year.

blackheartsgirl · 23/12/2023 09:22

I’d say crochet but that’s because I can’t knit 😂

try them both, you might find one suits you better than the other.

there are plenty of great tutorials on YouTube to try, lots swear by Bella Coco for crochet but I never got on with her but my mum did, I just tried others until I got it.

ive never done needle felting.

incognito50me · 23/12/2023 09:23

Crochet is also easy and so much fun. Not cheap, mind you, but knitting is the same.
It's something I do for my mental health and highly recommend it.

They are all easy. It might be best choosing according to what you want to make and to what extent you like following patterns. Knitting is best for making clothes, felting you can start making it up as you go along earlier and it’s good for toys and ornaments, crochet is probably in between the two in both respects.
Crochet is good if flowery patterns are your thing though there are lots of other things you can do with it.

BingoMarieHeeler · 23/12/2023 09:29

For me, needle felting is easiest, then crochet then knitting. I find knitting so hard! I started crochet about a year ago and have just made me and DD matching jumpers 😁

I would say you can spend as much or as little as you want really. If you are using expensive chunky yarns you will burn through £££ in no time but lace gauge in something cheap not so much.

I’ve name changed before I share pics - I love all things crafty, and here are a few of my creations.

this includes my first ever needle felt, my second patchwork quilt and a variety of paper crafting things, including book folding.

where in the country are you based?

For easiness I'd rank them needle felting, crochet then knitting. Mostly because I can do the first two but not knitting! I think needle felting is the easiest and then knitting and crochet are probably fairly equal in that some people prefer one to the other and find it easier.

Soubriquet · 23/12/2023 09:33

Thanks all.

Im Lincolnshire based, and I must say, needle felting is one that I’m drawn to

I can't knit or needle felt, so can't comment on those. But I crochet to give myself something to do while I'm watching TV (to stop scrolling on my phone) and it's brilliant. I've made some things that I'm really proud of. When you first start it is a bit frustrating, but it won't take long for you to get the hang of it. I would recommend using a light coloured yarn to start woth as it's much easier to see what you're doing (probably true of knitting as well). I learned from Bella Coco.

AnnaMagnani · 23/12/2023 09:36

Needle felting is dead easy, I was surprised to get something that actually looked like the picture on my first go.

Unfortunately I found my needle felted object was magnetically attractive to my cats and so was shredded all over the carpet the next day.

That was the beginning and end of my career in needle felting.

Crochet is next easiest and knitting the hardest.

crumblingschools · 23/12/2023 09:39

Another option is cross stitch

Ambi · 23/12/2023 09:41

Knitting, I took it up in lockdown and taught the kids. I learned as a child from my Nan but 35yrs later had totally forgotten. It is simple repetition so easy once you get in the groove.

millypeggyandpandora · 23/12/2023 09:41

I would say needle felting is easiest and really satisfying. I bought a kit recently and made “pigs in blankets” decorations for Christmas.

Mojolostforever · 23/12/2023 09:41

Knitting is easy once you get the hang of knit and purl stitches.
Start with thick yarn and big needles, you could knit a scarf quite quickly. Watch YouTube for instructions.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/12/2023 09:43

That quilt is stunning.

Do the one you’re drawn to. It’s not like set up costs are big for any of these things so if it’s not what you expected you can easily move on to another.

AnnaMagnani · 23/12/2023 10:01

Never do a scarf as a first project!

They are so flippin long, the boredom sets in very quickly. My first scarf project took about 3 years.

AwkwardPaws27 · 23/12/2023 10:02

Cross stitch? I knit, I've tried crochet but struggled to get the hang of it, but I've found cross stitch easier to pick up & put down without having to worry about losing count of stitches etc.
I get the Mood subscription box from Innocent Bones with a new kit every 2 months.

AuntMaryMaria · 23/12/2023 10:07

If you're lefthanded I would suggest you start with knitting. I'm a leftie, I love my crochet but it was a hard slog to get started and I occasionally get a ball of yarn that my slightly iffy technique finds almost impossible. Knitting is much more consistent.

No experience of needle felting.

Edited to add: I'm not saying you are a leftie, just mentioning it in case.

Sharontheodopolodous · 23/12/2023 10:13

Have a look online for 'stamped cross stitch kits'

There is no chart-its colour coded on the aida (fabric)

You can't go wrong (believe me-if I can do it,anyone can)

CopperLion · 23/12/2023 10:13

Off topic but I now understand why the shop is called Hobby Craft!

BooksAndHooks · 23/12/2023 10:14

Crochet. Cannot knit for the life of me, I am useless at anything crafty or arty, but can crochet.

EssexCat · 23/12/2023 10:14

Embroidery! I bought a kit from Not On the high street (a preprinted Christmas one) and I’ve LOVED doing it in the evenings. It’s a perfect to way to switch off my busy brain and I’m really proud of what I’ve finished!

DRS1970 · 23/12/2023 10:16

I find a good large jigsaw puzzle to be a good distraction from tech.

OldTinHat · 23/12/2023 10:19

They're all easy skills to learn.

Have you thought about doing an adult education course? My local council runs loads of crafting taster courses, sometimes just a morning or maybe a few hours over a number of weeks. They're a great way of trying things without investing £££ in materials.
