My dd wants a cake with a Barbie inside, skirt is the cake, for her birthday.

Anyone made their own? Or knows somewhere in nw England that does them?

I was thinking of trying to assemble and decorate one with m and s sponges, two eight inch and a six inch maybe.

Any other more easy cake ideas?

I don’t have pics cos they were taken so long ago they’re on SD cards lying in a box who knows where but this is the very tin if you fancy trying it yourself.

Pipe rosettes on for the skirt, cover in edible glitter to hide any fuck ups and you’re off to the races 😂

I don’t like baking but I do like icing and I had quite a lot of success cutting pre-made cakes as you suggested. I used to use a sharp knife, Tesco Angel cake bars and Victoria sponges and copious amounts of butter icing to make just about any shape imaginable 😂

No help but I had one of these for my 5th birthday and I adored it. I still remember it so clearly even though I'm 40 now.

For what it's worth, my mum definitely had it made professionally!

Thanks all! They have those cake tins on Amazon so I'm going to try that. Any tips on cake mix quantities and cooking time?

You do one dome cake. Can use ovenproof bowl. Get a barbie from charity shop take off legs and push into cake. Ice cake.

Thecatmaster · 22/12/2023 17:09

Professional cake maker here. Avoid those dress tins. The cake mix rarely cooks evenly in them. You'd be better off stacking several normal sponges and carving into a rough shape. Then you'll need to crumb coat it, refrigerate, then add another layer of buttercream before decorating. If you wish to cover in fondant, look up a tutorial if you want a smooth look, otherwise you will end up with folds (which might look more like fabric).

Thecatmaster · 22/12/2023 17:10

Also, if you're not a regular baker, Betty crocker cake mixes will give you a reliable sponge.

wrong thread sorry!

IIRC, Nigella has a version in “How To Be A Domestic Goddess” or possibly “How To Eat”.

Stressyfab · 22/12/2023 20:07

OP, please don’t do what my DM did!
She took one of my admittedly least played with barbies, severed her at the waist and used her as the cake topper😂
Cake looked brilliant but I was traumatised finding her laying on the counter later on. Pulled up the tea towel and she was just laying there 😂

Zippitydoodaa · 22/12/2023 20:37

I used to make them for my granddaughters.
Make about 3x 7" victoria sponge cakes .Stack together with butter icing and jam .
Take a sharp knife and carve into big ballgown shape .
Make a hole down the centre and pop a naked barbie doll down .
Make a little vest top with roll out icing and get a piping bag with star tube .Mix a couple of pink soft icing colours and just pipe little star blobs all over the 'dress' .
Looked quite pretty, and the girls loved them .

mylittleprince · 22/12/2023 20:51

I've made one for a friends daughter recently. It came out well. Just layer ordinary sponges and carve into the correct shape then make a hole for barbie. I wrapped her legs in clingfilm before putting her in. I did a crumb coat and then piped the dress on in buttercream.

Sarvanga38 · 22/12/2023 20:54

I’ve made two of these for my friend’s daughter in the past (she loved the first one so much, she wanted it again next year🤣).

Cake baked in Pyrex bowl here, and bottom half of Barbie cling-filmed before shoving in the cake, so toy good afterwards. All went fine.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 22/12/2023 22:02

Delia Smith victoria sponge always works.

cakename23 · 23/12/2023 00:27

OP, I attempted one many years ago. I used Nigella's guidance - she has a birthday cake sculpting mixture in Domestic Goddess I think. I used a big pyrex bowl to cook the bottom bit in then realised it wasn't going to come up high enough so cooked a smaller pyrex dish full of mixture, which is why there's a slightly odd double bump. Six year old DD loved it though! I used the whole barbie/sindy/whatever she is and just stuck her in.

I remember the big dish took forever to cook though, so probably not the best method.

I made one using a Pyrex plus one round cake. Turned out well! I just found a YouTube video and did the bbc good food easy vanilla cake recipe

User69371527 · 23/12/2023 00:30

And don’t take off legs! Cling film them

Tezza1 · 23/12/2023 00:44

@User1775 I'm glad you posted it on the wrong thread because I wouldn't have otherwise seen it. I thought it was very sweet, such a nice and fitting reminiscence.

Novembershine · 23/12/2023 07:03

Just adding to the don’t use half a doll, just cling film her legs comments.

i’ve sone one. I used a Pyrex pudding bowl to give a good shape and then added another sponge underneath for height. Covered it in fondant icing which was easier than expected as the folds made it look like fabric.

HollyBerryCrumble · 23/12/2023 07:12

Hi OP - the one I did for my daughter was a slightly different version - and super easy - just a normal shaped cake and hollowed out space for the doll to sit in the cake, then made a “skirt” out of icing.

Italianmeringuebuttercream · 23/12/2023 08:04

I did one for my dd 5th birthday. I used a tutorial from YouTube - Anne reardon how to cook that. Brilliant tips and recipe.

Italianmeringuebuttercream · 23/12/2023 08:10

Couldn't find elsa one, but this was baked in a Pyrex bowl. Hole cut in the middle and doll shoved in (wrap legs in cling film.)

My sister did this one year for my niece. She used a chocolate chip pannetone as the skirt. You’d be able to find a nice big one at Christmas time. Easy peasey
