I'm really funny with meat anyway but this is turning my stomach already.
Is this right? They have put the frozen turkey crown in the fridge to slowly defrost yesterday. (Wednesday) so 4-5 days to defrost. Is this right?

I dont feel like eating it already

Depends on its size, mine will be in the fridge today.

BarryKentPoet · 21/12/2023 14:01

I suppose if they keep the fridge closed and don't take it out, it might be ok?

RampantIvy · 21/12/2023 14:01

No, it's far too early.

olderbutwiser · 21/12/2023 14:02

I am not the person to ask, as I am pretty relaxed about that kind of thing. But FWIW I wouldn't be worried, I often do worse, DH does much worse, and I never get an upset stomach.

Alargeoneplease89 · 21/12/2023 14:02

How long does it take? The size of your turkey will affect how long it takes to defrost completely, but, as a rough guide, allow about 24hrs for every 2kg of turkey. Most of our turkey recipes call for a 5-6kg turkey, which will take about three full days to defrost in the fridge.

Grumpynan · 21/12/2023 14:04

Well they say 24 hours for every 2kg with a crown, so I suppose it depends on how big. Are they cooking it Sunday I know some people do cook and heat up the next day. In which case 3 days defrost would be fine

andjustlikethisorthat · 21/12/2023 14:05

Im cooking or Monday, collecting it from them Saturday thought I'd defrost from Saturday. Might get a little chicken for me and ds

EmmaStone · 21/12/2023 14:05

Surely, even if it was a fresh turkey in the fridge it would be ok for 4 days??

fruitpastille · 21/12/2023 14:06

It won't go off as soon as it's defrosted.

SpringIntoChaos · 21/12/2023 14:07

You are overreacting OP. Turkey will be fine defrosting in the fridge and cooked on Monday.

Seaweed42 · 21/12/2023 14:10

What does it weigh?
That is the deciding factor in when to start defrosting.

MahShinyShoes · 21/12/2023 14:10

The clock doesn't start ticking the second it comes out of the freezer - the bird will still be part frozen for 36-48 hours, then it's in a cold environment for another 48h & then it's thoroughly cooked.

I'm not sure where the danger lies unless the fridge isn't cold.

Newbutoldfather · 21/12/2023 14:11

Official safety advice (which is always very conservative) says allow 24 hours/2kg, so for a 5kg bird 2.5 days, then will keep 2 days after defrosting.

So, if 5kg, you can start 4.5 days before you intend to cook….about now.

andjustlikethisorthat · 21/12/2023 14:22

Ok so general thoughts are we won't get sick?
I'm very funny about meat anyway and the slightest doubt makes me not want to eat it

c3pu · 21/12/2023 14:23

If it was a good size crown I'd be taking out the freezer tomorrow at the latest, today wouldn't be unreasonable.

Frozen birds seem to take ages to defrost in my fridge, I'm often leaving it on the side for a few hours to get it fully thawed!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 21/12/2023 14:26

If you're that nervous, perhaps you shouldn't be eating meat at all?

Unless they are actually defrosting it in a warming drawer for the next few days it will be absolutely fine. And safer than trying to cook it from partly frozen.

LeggyLegsEleven · 21/12/2023 14:27

I’ve already got my turkey from M&S and I’m the date is the 26th on it.

NatMoz · 21/12/2023 14:28

Mine is defrosting in the fridge today ready for cooking on sunday

Sprogonthetyne · 21/12/2023 14:34

I'd rather it was in the fridge a day to soon, then still frozen in the middle.

Mountaindhew · 21/12/2023 14:43

The supermarkets are selling turkeys dated 26th now- so a fresh one, let alone a frozen one, is fine for Monday. Enjoy your roast turkey 🍗

C152 · 21/12/2023 14:44

As others have said, it depends on the weight. I've got a small boneless turkey breast and the butcher told me to defrost if 48hrs before cooking.

I'm really funny about meat and wouldn't enjoy eating it either.. but that's my issues.
Depends how big the turkey is, but will likely take a few days.
Even the thought of a big turkey defrosting and dripping juices everywhere makes me feel queezy 🤢
I'm picking a cooked one up from the butchers on Xmas eve 😆

Meat won't just go off from being in a fridge for 4 days.

Good idea because there’s no way your turkey will be near any dripping meat juices in a butcher’s.

Dr Hillary was talking about this today on Lorraine! He said it sometimes takes days. Recommend you download and watch as I can’t remember exactly what he said xx
