Magnesium?!

SausageCasseroles · 20/12/2023 19:37

So I've come off some meds that used to help with sleep and my sleep is all over the place.

I did try the Better You magnesium spray but have now ordered some Prizmaz bisglycinate as a friend recommended it.

Can I take both? Would that be too much magnesium?! Is one better than the other for sleep??

Do j need to compensate with anything else. I don't like the idea of getting it wrong or causing a deficiency of something else.

But I so need to sleep. (Probably perimenopausal, neurodiverse...stressed.)

Oh well that might be a dead end then! It was a nurse who recommended it but admittedly not in a professional capacity.

What about trying melatonin?

SausageCasseroles · 20/12/2023 19:46

Nooooo that's not what I want to hear! The tablets should arrive tomorrow so will try it and see

And the sedating antidepressant is what I've just worked hard to come off... (I gained rather a lot of weight). So some of this could be rebound insomnia, or maybe this is me 😬

I dont think you can buy melatonin in the UK?

I often can fall asleep sleep but wake up 4 or 5 hours later.

I take magnesium every day and I sleep so much better. I just take Holland & Barrett own brand tablets though.

SausageCasseroles · 20/12/2023 19:49

Ooh Crimson there is hope for me then! What made you start? How soon did it work?

Yes oral magnesium gave me the streaming shits 'upset my tummy'.

Boots 'Calcium + Magnesium' is fine for me however.

Aworldofmyown · 20/12/2023 19:50

Magnesium definitely helped me.

Gherkingreen · 20/12/2023 19:55

After a long period of broken sleep (perimenopause), I started taking 2 x magnesium biglycinate (more gentle on the stomach than other types) every night before bed.
I've gone from regularly waking at 2am or 3am and unable to get back to sleep for hours, to sleeping through from 10:30pm to 6:30am ish and if I do wake in the middle, I settle back to sleep quickly.
I also take HRT, exercise well, eat well, low alcohol intake, regular bedtimes - but I do believe the magnesium is very effective for me.

Remagirl · 20/12/2023 19:58

You can also bathe in magnesium to absorb the benefits. I have used it post surgery to help with sleep and restless legs. I used the spray and the bath salts. Really helped.

CharmedCult · 20/12/2023 19:59

Magnesium has been a gamechanger for my perimenopausal insomnia.

CrimsonElevenDelightPetrichor · 20/12/2023 20:02

Sorry I can't really remember @SausageCasseroles. I think I read somewhere that it helps with muscle cramps, insomnia & anxiety. As that sort of sums me up, I thought I'd give it a try. It started working after a week, I think.

@SoMuchSimpler If you take calcium & magnesium the magnesium isn't absorbed, iirc. You need magnesium to absorb the calcium, but not the other way round. Or something....

InconvenientPeg · 20/12/2023 20:02

I take it, to help muscle recovery (having a intensive course of sports massage therapy), he mentioned that it might help sleep as an aside, and it really does for me. I sleep well, I just move a lot in my sleep and wake myself up. I definitely am less active when I'm asleep if I take it, and I know about it, if I haven't taken it. It's not a magic bullet, but I'm terrible at remembering to take supplements but have been good with these because I can actually see a difference.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 20/12/2023 20:06

Works for me, it's like a sleeping tablet and I wake up feeling groggy.

I take enough tablets to provide 400mcg of elemental magnesium, which is three tablets from thr pack I buy off Amazon. Think it's called NewLeaf.

Also peri meno. I've haven't slept so deeply since before I had children.

runningonberocca · 20/12/2023 20:07

I swear by magnesium bisglycinate for sleep. I’m a clinician in the NHS and I know the evidence is lacking but personally it works for me! And lots of my colleagues take it too. It’s a lot easier on the stomach than other forms of magnesium

SoMuchSimpler · 20/12/2023 20:07

Well it stops my cramp @CrimsonElevenDelightPetrichor so it's certainly being absorbed, unless calcium stops cramp as well?

Ratfinkstinkypink · 20/12/2023 20:08

It works for me too, I was a serial insomniac and magnesium has definitely helped (I tried melatonin but it did nothing for me).

BastardyCat · 20/12/2023 20:11

I have found it really helps my sleep and restless legs. I also take 5htp which has really helped me wake up in a better mood. It does give me very vivid dreams but they are never unpleasant or scary so I don’t mind.

You can buy melatonin online- I get it from iherb. Be aware the doses are much too big though - they can be up to 10mg which is WAY too much. I take a quarter of a 3mg gummy- any more and I get groggy and vivid nightmares. I also take magnesium but it doesn't make a difference like melatonin

Windmill34 · 20/12/2023 20:14

Op, there’s magnesium & magnesium
magnesium citrate which is usually cheapest like supermarket and will give you loose stools out off any of the magnesium

you need to spend a little in order to get a better product
its probably same as buying primark product to M&S

if it’s for sleep you need magnesium glycinate
organic is the best as no additives like fillers in it
also a good well known brand
unfortunately nit Holland & Barrett !
something like
Viridian , Solgar, Hey nutrition

The elemental dose is the one you should be looking on the bottle
For a woman it should be around
300mg -320mg a day for adult

pinkhousesarebest · 20/12/2023 20:18

Magnesium Bisglycinate combined with L-theanine has changed my life. I also read somewhere recently that vit D needed magnesium to become fully activated and not adhere to artery walls? Anyway I now sleep so well( post menopausal) and I no longer startle the way I used to😂.
Also I read this week that melatonin should not be used as a long term thing - that it’s very dangerous in fact. I had tried melatonin ( was desperate and it is widely available in France) but it really did not solve my sleep problem.

SausageCasseroles · 20/12/2023 20:24

Oooh liking the magnesium love. I am really hoping it will help.

I've bought "PrizMag" off amazon on recommendation. It was 21 quid!!! Not that price is indicator of quality at all but thought I'd go for what worked for my friend!
