Magnesium?!

SausageCasseroles · 20/12/2023 19:37

So I've come off some meds that used to help with sleep and my sleep is all over the place.

I did try the Better You magnesium spray but have now ordered some Prizmaz bisglycinate as a friend recommended it.

Can I take both? Would that be too much magnesium?! Is one better than the other for sleep??

Do j need to compensate with anything else. I don't like the idea of getting it wrong or causing a deficiency of something else.

But I so need to sleep. (Probably perimenopausal, neurodiverse...stressed.)

I take vit d and b12 as a spray as they've been really low before.

If I had money I'd have regular tests to know where I am at!

There are a few different types of magnesium. Glycinate can cause anxious feelings in some people. I get on great work out, it's just something to be aware of. If that's the case you can try a different form.
Fine to use topical and oral together.

L-theanine made me feel horrible. The strangest buzzy feeling ever and I'm quite envious of those who find it's absolutely miraculous.

You're right about melatonin not being available to buy anymore in the UK. However I order it from American websites and haven't had any issues. If you pay by credit card and look out for dodgy looking sites that are also selling strong prescription meds for example you should be OK. I use the brand in the blue bottle so don't buy the unbranded cheap ones in a plain white bag (you never know what they are for sure), but one of the big healthcare brands. I haven't bought any for about 3 years though so don't know about import charges now. And i suppose technically if they are checked on their way into the country they could confiscate them but that has never happened to me. There are different strengths too.

Well it stops my cramp @CrimsonElevenDelightPetrichor so it's certainly being absorbed, unless calcium stops cramp as well?

@SoMuchSimpler no idea. I read it somewhere. Glad it works for you though. My sleep deteriorated when I switched to mag & calc, then improved again when I switched back to magnesium.

SoMuchSimpler · 20/12/2023 21:10

@CrimsonElevenDelightPetrichor I didn't even know there was a connection between magnesium and sleep, so thanks for that. I'll see if makes any difference either way if I mess around with it.

You can also bathe in magnesium to absorb the benefits. I have used it post surgery to help with sleep and restless legs. I used the spray and the bath salts. Really helped.

If you buy it as bath salts, you'll want ones with Epsom salts (rather than e.g. Himalayas salts or anything else that is just sodium chloride - which is still great to bathe in, but doesn't have magnesium.)

Tighginn · 20/12/2023 21:33

Goodrays 30mg cbd drink. The only thing that has helped me.

Anjelika · 20/12/2023 21:42

I buy melatonin from Piping Rock. I buy the 3mg melt ones. I wasn't aware of any long term use effects so will investigate that. I take magnesium too but need a better one I think as it gives me a bit of a dodgy tum.

Hohofortherobbers · 20/12/2023 21:45

I've been taking the standard h&b magnesium 375mg for about a month now, it's not the glycinate people talk of but it seems OK for me, perhaps improving my sleep, hope that's not the famous last words tonight! Doesn't upset my tummy. Maybe I'll try a different brand next time to see if I can maximise effects but I think it helps.

NannyGythaOgg · 20/12/2023 21:54

It's definitely worth doing a bit of googling around magnesium. There is little doubt that we don't get enough now (due to intensive farming reducing the amount in soil, therefore in vegetables that we eat. BUT there are many different types available in supplement form. Personally, glycinate works for me but I know it definitely isn't the right compound for everyone.

Remagirl · 20/12/2023 22:22

I don’t buy it as bath salts I buy the magnesium sleep Epsom salts. Bath salts is just turn of phrase.

BettyUnderswoob · 20/12/2023 22:30

I take ionic magnesium liquid and CBD in the evenings. Close my eyes at night and don't open until the morning.
These have saved my health and sanity (along with ear plugs and HRT!)

SausageCasseroles · 21/12/2023 07:58

Oh Betty that sounds perfect! And what I used to do on the meds I was on which I truly miss.

I got 6 hours last night. Which is good for me at the moment but I used to get 8 and I'm so tired in the afternoons.

I have also wondered about the hrt conversation...

I’m guessing that you were on mitazipine?

I use magnesium alongside mitazipine at the moment and didn’t think that the magnesium did much until I ran out and didn’t bother restocking for a few weeks. Turns out that it does 😂

tinselvestsparklepants · 21/12/2023 08:10

Joining this thread for all the info. Thank you - have just been looking into magnesium too to try and sleep all through the night, not waking at 3am to not sleep for another few hours..

SausageCasseroles · 21/12/2023 08:11

Oh yes. Mirtazapine is actual magic.

However I am also 5 stone heavier and was overweight to begin with 😬. Its been really tough to come off too. But in terms of sleep it was actual.magic.

SausageCasseroles · 21/12/2023 08:12

Tinselves yes it's the 3am waking that's awful isn't it. By about 6/7 I start to think I could get back to sleep and need to start the day. And you're there thinking "I just need to sleep".

I dont think you can buy melatonin in the UK?

I often can fall asleep sleep but wake up 4 or 5 hours later.

We buy it from American sites. So far no issue. I just Google it and go with the best deal. No favourite website.

DP stopped and started taking magnesium and zinc tablets instead (mobu is on the yellow packet) he seems quite happy with them so I'd say they work.

However, melatonin helps you get to sleep but doesn't keep you asleep so from what you've said here I'm not sure it would help.

Isn't 3am the devils hour? Maybe you need an exorcism rather than melatonin 😂😂😂

Anjelika · 25/12/2023 15:12

I have no problem falling asleep - it's waking in the night and struggling to get back to sleep that's my problem

  • and melatonin helps with that a lot. I soon know if I've not taken any for a while.
SausageCasseroles · 25/12/2023 16:06

Ha I'd take an exorcism if it worked!

I've slept through the last 2 nights so maybe the magnesium kicking in. Or the business or something. I've gone tk bed late so it's not a full 7-8 hours but I reckon 6 without being up at 3am.

I didnt know melatonin helps to sleep through I thought it was just to help people feel sleepy in the first place. Will need to investigate further!

I swear by magnesium bisglycinate for sleep. I’m a clinician in the NHS and I know the evidence is lacking but personally it works for me! And lots of my colleagues take it too. It’s a lot easier on the stomach than other forms of magnesium

When I spoke to a pharmacist they said not to take it unless magnesium deficient.

Melatonin only helps to send you to sleep not to keep you asleep.

How would you know? G0s don't test randomly.

I'd happily do a test... it does seem to help a lot of people

Magnesium helps me a great deal. I also take HRT and the progesterone in the evening helps too.
