What are your Boxing Day plans/traditions

Just that really, do you have something you always do on Boxing Day?

When I was a kid and young adult we always went to my aunts for a party and I really used to look forward to it. Now I have young children of my own and want to start a tradition of something we always do on Boxing Day. The past few years it’s just felt like a nothing day to me as DH is football mad so inevitably he’s either at a match or the pub watching football.

back home after visiting relatives. Take kids for a long heath walk in morning and in afternoon jump on sofa watch movies and eat selection box

Zone2NorthLondon · 19/12/2023 20:42

We don’t get dressed it’s a pyjama and blanket day. Kids ,love being in furry dressing gowns and all snuggled up on sofa with blanket

A big walk with the grandparents and dog after a cooked breakfast. Then wave everyone off, get into PJs and relax. DC will be playing with new gifts, I will be reading and DH will probably be watching TV. Leftovers for dinner. Bliss!

I love bubble & squeak

My friend has had a tradition of having a party on Boxing Day (evening onwards). We've gone every year for past 6 years.

Hellocatshome · 19/12/2023 20:52

Boxing day dip for charity in the North Sea somehow has become a tradition I keep trying to end the tradition but for some reason people seem to want to keep doing it.

We have a full on day Christmas day with family so boxing day hubby goes to the football, dad is glued to the horse racing and my son will be messing around with his new things etc leaving me free to have a day with my horse before we all go out for tea in the evening (with extended family).

MachineBee · 19/12/2023 21:10

When I was young my family always played tennis (big tennis fans) ‘to blow away the Christmas cobwebs’. Even if it was snowy (we played with orange balls then).

This year I’ll be blowing away the Xmas cobwebs by trekking up the M1 taxi-ing adult DCs home as no trains and they have jobs to get back to.

Usually a walk with my friend but im totally floored with a chest infection and off work. So my boxing day will be at home trying to get my strength up again. Im breathless walking to the kitchen let alone a mountain!

skippy67 · 19/12/2023 21:20

Football! Then home for buffet leftovers and board games

Mayhemmumma · 19/12/2023 21:26

Nothing. I'm relieved it's over and that the kids are (hopefully) happy from Christmas Day and will have new things to play with. Chill day

everyredsock · 19/12/2023 21:29

Walk. Leftovers. Crap tv. Possibly a board game depending on energy levels.

idontlikealdi · 19/12/2023 21:31

Long walk with the dog to a pub that has a Morris dancing on the green outside. Meet up with family / friends on the way. Back home for ham, duck eggs and chips.

Mardyybum · 19/12/2023 21:35

We go for a walk to watch the (clean boot) bloodhound hunt

ElizabethVonArnim · 19/12/2023 21:41

Sea swim!

Giraff3 · 19/12/2023 21:43

Mini xmas dinner (boxing day) me & partner
Pjs, tv, and snacking.
6pm onwards, usually go my sisters for buffet and board games. But not this year. Having a pj day instead at home.

Derb · 19/12/2023 21:45

We don't see family Xmas day so Boxing Day is a big family get together this year and we plan to do it from here on. The kids are all very excited. My DH is working but I'll be taking the kids regardless and hopefully he can join us next year.

Locallady2 · 19/12/2023 22:32

Leftover turkey/vegetable curry at a relatives home. Prefer it to the christmas roast dinner!

Hopingforbetterluck · 20/12/2023 09:52

Ooh a cooked breakfast and a long walk before a pj afternoon sounds good. I love a leftover turkey curry but we’re at relatives for Xmas dinner so I won’t have any leftovers this year.
I’m sure the kids will be happy playing with their new toys - thanks all

DD rides horses so she goes out with the local blood hound pack. We go and watch for a bit/wait for her in the pub

Then home for hot baths, leftovers for dinner, and films on the telly.

Hopingforbetterluck · 20/12/2023 10:00

Going down to the pub is never a bad idea, my three year old loves it. Must take after his dad!

Boxing Day picnic and BBQ.
Walk somewhere and eat turkey and veg soup from a thermos.
This year we're heading to the coast for a beach walk.

Then in evening we'll do a BBQ for family.

itsgettingweird · 20/12/2023 10:49

Nothing!!

Previous years we went to my parents in the afternoon for a small buffet. But my mum dies last year and my dads staying at my brothers Xmas night this year (we are all going for the day).

Also my ds is a swimmer and literally has the 3 days over x,as off so I'm looking forward to having 1 day of doing nothing. This will become my new tradition.

Xmas Eve will be going to crematorium and Xmas day my brothers.

But I would look into what you like as a family. So walking? Beach, forest NT place? Taking a flask of hot drink or a local cafe nearby to stop at? Pub lunch?

Remember young children are usually overwhelmed and tired from Xmas day and are wanting to use their new gifts so may not want a whole day out somewhere or a late night.

Well your ds isn't going to let you get out of that one 😂😂😂
