What are your Boxing Day plans/traditions

Just that really, do you have something you always do on Boxing Day?

When I was a kid and young adult we always went to my aunts for a party and I really used to look forward to it. Now I have young children of my own and want to start a tradition of something we always do on Boxing Day. The past few years it’s just felt like a nothing day to me as DH is football mad so inevitably he’s either at a match or the pub watching football.

We're going to watch the rugby league. Hopefully it won't be too cold.

I'd love it if we could just have a cold buffet here, go for a long walk, play a game and relax. However, we always have my Mum xmas day, so only fair to see someone from DH's family Boxing Day, which means another large meal and none of them like walking, so it'd be rude to go out on my own or just the two of us.

DH for a few years saved a present for each of us Boxing Day, so that's something we've all got into - I've got two things for everyone.

I used to love Boxing Day before my parents split up. We used to have a lie in, and Dad would make a lunch - basically Christmas Dinner but with chips instead of potatoes. Then we'd just chill for the afternoon, watching TV, reading books we'd got for Christmas, buffet tea, stay up late. Often some family would come round and join us for various parts of the day.

Parents split when I was 24 and now everything's just weird.

We stay in our pjs and eat leftovers, then a Chinese in evening. Its basically a boardgames marathon for the whole day till late

I can sympathise with you totally, been with my DP 10 years and boxing day has always been his day because of all the sports he likes to watch, he goes to one of our locals and for the past 2 years I've joined him there later and was bored out of my head! Me and my daughter are just having a chilled day watching movies, eating, playing with her toys and maybe my mum will come over and I'll make us some party food. Let him watch his rubbish football its boring anyway! 😅

Boxing Day is just Christmas Day part 2 for us as fil comes up from Oxford and a family friend comes round with her children, so there’s still lots of gift giving, it’s also a picky bits day with bubble and squick for breakfast.

twistyizzy · 26/12/2023 10:07

Watch the opening of the Boxing Day meet, and catch up with friends, early then off to the Boxing Day shoot to work dog for couple of hours while DH + DD chill at home. I leave them plates of picky stuff to nibble on during the day.
Back home after a massive Beaters' lunch and prep food for parents coming over at 4pm.
I prefer Boxing Day to Christmas Day.

Boxing day buffet with the family. I enjoy it more than Christmas day.

cardibach · 26/12/2023 10:42

Before I moved I used to go with family to do a Boxing Day sea swim. It was a lively community event if a little cold. In the past we've also gone for a walk before Turkey and chips etc.
Not sure what I'll do today - I too would like to make myself a tradition (live alone, but adult DD and partner about 20 mins drive away, lots of local friends and good social life generally). I'll watch these suggestions.

I’m going to have a second Christmas dinner at my grandparents house. I’ve gone there every year with my parents since I was born and now I go with my husband and son as well. Grandparents are in their eighties now but still love hosting the whole family.

stargirl1701 · 26/12/2023 12:46

A breakfast with all the grandparents who stayed the night before. A big walk with the dog. Say cheerio to the GPs. PJs on and relax! Leftovers for dinner.
