My DS really wants to watch something he considers to be 'scary' so I'm trying to think of something that fits the bill but is age appropriate - any suggestions?

The Woman In Black with Daniel Radcliffe is a 12A.. Bloody terrifying...!

Coolstorysis · 19/12/2023 19:47

It's a really difficult one to be honest, standards of what is OK for kids are so changeable. What have they already watched? Stranger things maybe, Wednesday (ds2 enjoyed that). I was an 80s child and watched bloody all sorts, so my gauge is off. Monster squad? Lost boys? Poltergeist? For old school.

The Others, Signs, The Village, Stranger Things, Haunting of Bly Manor and Hill House depending how scary you want to go.

I suspect he has lower tolerance than he thinks he does! He tried but didn't enjoy Stranger Things. Loved Wednesday. Woman in Black is terrifying!!!! Do I let him watch that even though it's the 'right' rating??

Wednesday.
The Thing, John Carpenter version. Swearing but no sexual content.

Coolstorysis · 19/12/2023 19:50

Me and ds2 enjoyed truth seekers on amazon prime, It was pretty creepy and we thought pretty good. Unfortunately cancelled after one series.

Don't think there was anything unsuitable in it.

qpdlurgak · 19/12/2023 19:51

No I wouldn't do woman in black if he hasn't watched much else yet, I'd build up to it!

Saucery · 19/12/2023 19:52

Lockwood And Co.? Unfathomably cancelled after one season but very good.

Coolstorysis · 19/12/2023 19:54

We also watch inside no9 together, although it might be a bit much depending on the child.

LubaLuca · 19/12/2023 19:58

How about Gremlins? It's very tame and has plenty of laughs, but it was a 15 when it was first released (quite unbelievable these days).

McConkeysPlate · 19/12/2023 20:00

Mine loves gremlins and jaws

SecondUsername4me · 19/12/2023 20:01

My dd watched (and loved) A Quiet Place at 12.

Landlubber2019 · 19/12/2023 20:04

Check out miss peregrine, excellent film

Moonmelodies · 19/12/2023 20:06

Jaws.

No! Really? We loved that.

Coolstorysis · 19/12/2023 20:09

Can't believe I never thought to watch Jaws with the kids, tbf I haven't seen it since I was young either.

MariaVT65 · 19/12/2023 20:21

I first watched Scream when I was 12 and loved it.

I watched The Woman in Black as an adult and shit my pants. I’d go Scream :)

ltappleby · 19/12/2023 20:35

The Thing is terrifying, my then boyfriend 25 years old had to leave the cinema! What about Jurassic Park? I second Jaws as well.

AutumnComfort · 19/12/2023 20:45

The Others?

PonyMcBony · 19/12/2023 21:00

The Meg
Arachnophobia
Haunted mansion

Tbh at that age I'd read lots of Stephen king and Richard Laymon and watched Nightmare on Elm Street/The shining etc. perks of a friends older brother working in the video shop 😂

Mine Watched more action films at that age - like Die Hard - yes it's sweary but the tv version isn't particularly gory or classics like the towering inferno and Poseidon adventure

UglyNess · 19/12/2023 21:03

I'd think Scream was too violent and bloody but I've not watched it since it came out?

Jaws terrifies me!!! Is it not a PG or something though?

It was a PG when it came out but it may well have been reclassified as a 12a these days.
I both loved and was terrified of jaws when I saw it at about 8. I'm fascinated by sharks and love watching documentaries on them but won't go near the ocean in real life!

qpdlurgak · 19/12/2023 21:09

We haven't watched scream yet, I prefer to keep it more to spooky rather than human violence.

Singleandproud · 19/12/2023 21:12

Adam Sandler's Halloween film Hubbies Halloween.
Wednesday
Goosebumps films and series
Jaws
Beetlejuice - new one out soon too
Perhaps old black and white cheesy ones

Not a horror film but an older one he might not have seen Truman Show - my DD loved it at that age
