Why are the birds singing at 12.30am?

I go to bed around midnight most nights and never hear the birds singing. But tonight there are loads of them singing outside of my window. It's kind of creepy! Just wondering if it's happening anywhere else or just in my garden?!

I have a robin which always sings at night, I blame the light pollution around here. It’s only ever the one though. I’d be freaked out if there were loads of them like you say 😳

SomethingSpangly · 19/12/2023 00:44

I hear this sometimes too and always wonder!
Maybe it's do with it being dry weather after a wet spell 🤔

SomethingSpangly · 19/12/2023 00:45

And light pollution...you're probably right there @CarolChristmasCake

flowerchild2000 · 19/12/2023 00:47

That is creepy. Animals have been all over the news lately for uncharacteristic behaviors due to human causes issues.

Ortila · 19/12/2023 00:47

The LED lights in streetlights keep them awake. It's a problem because if they don't get enough sleep they'll get sick. Poor birds. The old style yellowish lights weren't so bad.

SirenSays · 19/12/2023 00:48

They're having their Christmas party tonight

Anniissa · 19/12/2023 00:49

I assume it’s light pollution issues. Here it’s not unusual for the birds to be singing until 1-2am and then start again at 4-5am. I’ve begun to really hate the sound of birdsong!

stepintochristmas1 · 19/12/2023 00:50

Robins have been known to sit on street lights and sing . Also the only bird you'll hear on Christmas day .

specialsauce · 19/12/2023 00:54

Blackbirds sometimes sing in the middle of the night.

Beautiful.

Maybe not if it's keeping you awake though!

Ortila · 19/12/2023 00:58

Paul McCartney liked it!

Dunnocks, thrushes and wrens can sing at night too sometimes.

transformandriseup · 19/12/2023 01:05

Light pollution would make sense. There are no street lamps here and I've never heard birds singing at night in winter.

I quite like it in the summer though.

Raffyash1 · 19/12/2023 01:07

Don't watch 'leave the world behind'!

MariaLuna · 19/12/2023 01:09

I love bird song. Dawn chorus when I'm up really early.

Never hear it at night though.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 19/12/2023 01:14

It's not unusual now to hear them here. Lovely as it is, is not a good sign rnvironmentall. 🥹

first time I heard them I was very confused & a bit creeped out too

I saw this last night...what an eye opener. Mother Nature is tired of us being so ignorant about what is happening to our planet.

This has caused lots of extra night singing here, thanks weird neighbours illuminating their trees

If you download the Merlin app, you can identify birds by their song. Really interesting when you want to know what birds are singing

I used to live in the town on a main road, the birds would sing about 3-5 in the morning. Now I’ve moved rurally i don’t hear them so light pollution would make sense

QueenofTerrasen · 19/12/2023 01:28

They've just got in from their Christmas do

Ortila · 19/12/2023 01:35

Ironically, these problematic LED lights are being used in an effort to help the environment.

it’s 0150am and I just woke up to go to the loo. I heard birds singing and thought ‘that’s weird, it’s too early’ And then got back into bed, started looking on MN … and there is a thread about it. Yes, spooky!

MeMySonAnd1 · 19/12/2023 02:43

Not living in a seismic zone, are you?

They sing madly before earthquakes or big storms.

Nomad19 · 19/12/2023 03:09

Heard a singular bird singing around 1am. Whereabouts are you? I'm in London.

swansease · 19/12/2023 03:36

I went for a night walk just now and noticed a bird singing about 3.15am. Not usually up at this time to know what's normal but I was surprised.
