Why are the birds singing at 12.30am?

I go to bed around midnight most nights and never hear the birds singing. But tonight there are loads of them singing outside of my window. It's kind of creepy! Just wondering if it's happening anywhere else or just in my garden?!

Weird as I just noticed the birds singing at 3:51 and wondered why… maybe the Christmas lights??

Might be something to do with the weather it was warm yesterday when I got in my car at lunchtime yesterday it said it was 21c dropped to 17c whilst driving. It was 16c at 8pm.

@MeMySonAnd1
That's fascinating really didn't know birds often do that if there is an earthquake or big storms going to happen,

I think i really need to study more in depth about nature at college or further education

Thanks for posting about that too

A nightingale?

WavyLines11 · 19/12/2023 07:26

I had to pick a relative up from A&E at 1am a couple of nights ago and while waiting in the car park kept hearing occasional bird song.

It just didn't feel right to hear them singing in the middle of the night, at first I thought I was hearing things.

Maybe they had a ripple too many on their Xmas do?

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/12/2023 16:47

I live semi rurally but sometimes get a murmuration of seagulls at around 1 am making a hell of a racket and just flying in circles. I live a very very long way from the nearest coastline. It's very odd and always causes a stir on our local FB page.

Flickersy · 19/12/2023 16:50

It's not unusual to hear birds (it's robins I usually hear) in the middle of the night in London. All that lovely light pollution.

I've definitely heard them a couple of times I've the last week.

PangramAddict · 19/12/2023 16:52

I have badgers out back and they can sound like birds. Although it does sound like you are hearing actual birds.

Womanofcustard · 19/12/2023 16:57

It’s light pollution. No street lights where I live, and I’ve never heard a bird singing at night. I’ve read that the lack of sleep shortens their lives. I’ve noticed when I’ve been in a city that the birds are smaller.

gotomomo · 19/12/2023 17:03

I've got two robins sitting on my balcony singing now, with the flashing fairy lights around them. I suspect the lights confuse them. All street lights are turned off at 11.30pm here though

ALongHardWinter · 19/12/2023 17:59

Artificial street lighting. I've heard birds singing at 2 in the morning.

Notcookie · 19/12/2023 18:10

Light pollution wouldn't explain why I don't hear them every night though. Maybe it is the mild temperature. Will be interesting if it happens again tonight.

I've just been outside for a smoke and a robin or something (I didn't have my glasses on) flew past me and landed on the fence. It's 10 to 12 in the night. It's the first time I've seen one at this time of night.

Doyouthinkyou · 19/12/2023 23:55

I've noticed this too in the past week.

Whattheheckcarer · 20/12/2023 00:02

This is worrying.
