Shithole101 · 16/12/2023 09:42

I need to built up some energy to properly sort my house. It's no where near as bad as it was. But it's not great either its also a bit grubby , I have about 3/4 loads of washing. That I must do . I Need to clean all the skirting boars ,door frames, doors. Also banister spindles. Feels alot as i have 3 floors. Hoover everywhere really want to get it done as it's the last weekend semi child free until after Xmas.

You've had loads of very long threads about your house. What advice did you get on those that you could implement now with having a tidy and a clean?🧽

Thecomfortador · 16/12/2023 10:46

I think setting a timer for 10mins is a good idea, I'll try that today. Think I'm struggling with general motivation after a heavy weekend last weekend (parents over, I cooked a Christmas dinner, played in a concert, kids birthday) but hopefully a few 10 minute bursts will get us back to a reasonable state. And I can watch strictly in comfort tonight.

Hope you manage to find some get up and go somehow too!

Same here. Kitchen, bathrooms. Started a clothes clearout that’s turned into a clothes mountain. Need to sort that & the laundry. In bed right now with tea & toast, which is lovely as I’ve been so unwell & working hard this week.

Good news is though, that most of my Christmas shopping is done. We’re going to see Santa tomorrow. I’m working all of next week, but I should be able to get a fair bit done today. I’m breaking it all down in my mind now, so it’s not too much!

My kitchen looks trashed. But it actually not bad to clean . I just hide everything in the dish washer. Turn that on. I put a bin next to the work tops and and crumbs rubbish etc I just wipe into the bin.

My Xmas is done I just for a handful of bits to wrap. I done it all on line. I hate shops

Make a checklist.
Visibly seeing things ticked off will spur you to carry on.
Literally put every little chore you have to do on there and tick off as you go.
Give yourself a timer or take little breaks inbetween to stop you from becoming bored.
Think of the satisfaction you'll have once it's all done!

This is the type of cleaning I struggle with. All those bits I can usually ignore and when I finally notice the grubbiness, well it's just overwhelming about where to start.

I live in an very old house too which doesn't help.

My skirting and doors are awful. The worst seems to be at dog level. Then I have kid grubby hands level

@Shithole101 I enjoy seeing your posts too. You're doing great.

I have my own challenge to tackle today....mainly decluttering though. My skirting boards and doorframes etc and dirty too but I'm not that at stage yet! Too much to do first.

Can you post some pics of your progress?

Also, you said you have an arm chair in your warm room? What's a warm room? Or was that a typo? I'm now imagining you living in some country mansion with a "warm room", whatever that may be Grin

My first couple of threads were because I was really struggling and it felt hopeless. And the threads really helped.

Yes I do have a few threads about my house cleaning etc. As much as I'm in a better place than before. I could still very easy slip back. So these threads help me get going and help me not to slip back. Sounds stupid but if it was nkt for theses threads I would not do anything.

Well, I've just read this thread, whilst drinking my coffee. I know I've need to get started on my place (I'm pretty on the ball most days), but thank you for starting thread, it's given me the kick up the butt to actually start (which I'm just doing now) x

When I first got myself into a state . Lots of people on here kept telling a bit at a time do 10 mins 30 mins what ever you can manage. Then rest for a bit do another 10 min etc. It felt hopeless
I'm thinking yeah small chunks in the mean time someone is undoing what I have done
It felt hopeless I felt total shit. But actually they were right. I have managed to get alot done. Before I would do loads burn myself out then go in circles.

This is so true. Progress not perfection.

Yes mess happens while you’re cleaning other stuff. But it would’ve happened anyway and then you’d have the mess + the still uncleaned bit.

How do you eat an elephant?
In small chunks!

Maybe I will do a picture or 2 i will see . The warm room . Is not a room at all 🤣 its just a massive cupboard where the hot water tank is. I try most of our clothes in there. Yeah we have a compact reclining arm chair that's was for dd bedroom. But it broke. Teen ds decided to put it in his room. He then dumped it in the warm room. I don't even know if I can pick it up.

Wish I lived in a mansion though

I cart the laptop into different rooms and watch a series on amazon prime or netflix (which ever one I happen to be subscribed to at the time)
Big Bang Theory is good for this as the episodes are around 20 minutes long so I see how much I can get done in that time.
I choose something to watch that I've already seen so I know what's going on and don't have to be fully concentrated on the screen.

Pottyberry · 16/12/2023 11:33

Standing in solidarity with you OP, and PPs, starting mine now. Starting with a bin bag and hoping for the best...😱

TicTac80 · 16/12/2023 11:44

@iljafjpr that's a really good idea :)

Shithole101 · 16/12/2023 11:44

I have more to do than I thought. I don't think I will be able to do the skirting/doors today. Have pissed myself of now. Thought only had a few easy bits to do but actually no . Ho fucking hum 😭

Need to take my own advice but I’ve found setting myself timers to get say 2-3 tasks done in helps so much. Or say like 20 mins to tidy then 10 mins dusting and hoovering etc and break it down that way. Also found that focusing on one room at a time helps too - so I’ll try not to start the kitchen if the hall is still over run with shoes and coats 😂.

I kind of do that to. I do my hall way /stairs last because I'm throwing loads of crap down the stairs I also need to get 2 more hoovers even if they are cheap ones so I can have one on each floor . Feels like the end of world to get the hoover from down stairs and going it up .

@Shithole101 Ah, I see! Love the sound of your warm room Smile

I have nowhere the dry clothes and it is such a hassle.

I've had a relatively productive morning. Not a lot of cleaning done yet but a lot of stuff chucked out, which is good.

Shithole101 · 16/12/2023 13:17

My bedroom is done. I slid some chunky wood down the stairs and damaged the wall ffs. Brought bags of rubbish down to. Kitchen next. But im sitting on my butt for a bit first.

It's just a cupboard 😅. I have 4 airers plus the banisters. It pisses me of. But in reality no one comes to my house so no one sees it.

@Shithole101 it may be "just a cupboard" to you, but my house has NO cupboards Sad no built in storage at all. Very frustrating.

I use a clean damp mop (I change the mop heads depending on what I am cleaning and they get washed in the machine, so get a much longer life) and run along the skirting boards with it on a regular basis. For bannisters, a thick fluffy sock and hot soapy water, put sock on hand and run it up and down the bannisters. For tough stains, pink stuff comes into its own! Put a pop sock on the end of the hoover and pick up the items and then remove and put into a trug (love a trug for putting stuff in) and then sorting into room trugs, so shoes / toys /items for one person in their trug and put into their room and repeat!

I have a gadget mop thingy for the skirting . Wipes , clothes etc for the banisters etc. And yes I have pink stuff. I like elbow grease as well .

I'm gonna get of my nut again I got distracted with other shit
