Do you eat food you don't like?

Following a random conversation with my dad!
I was making a tuna sandwich with chopped onion, cucumber etc and I put red pepper in it
Dad says "I don't like red peppers, or green"
Neither do I but they're good for you so I eat them

I guess I have a kind of hierarchy of food
Love - pizza, cake etc
Don't mind and will eat - veg, apples etc
Wouldn't touch if you paid me - offal, pistachios

I say I'm not a fussy eater because I will eat 99% of stuff but I don't actually enjoy it. Like cucumber, carrots, broccoli are neutral to me

Yes. Well, it’s food I tolerate. But I have to eat this way to try and stay healthy. I no longer eat for enjoyment. I eat for nourishment.

If I ate what I liked, which is basically processed, glorious crap, then I wouldn’t be giving myself a fighting change at a healthy, longer life. Not for me, I’d be making merry and stuff the consequences, but I have young children.

Chilicabbage · 14/12/2023 12:40

I don't eat things I don't like. Why would I do that. There are only few things I don't like so it's not like my life suffers because I don't eat kidneys, mushrooms or avocados....

Offal is good for you so should be there with the not liked peppers by your logic?

Precipice · 14/12/2023 12:40

Depends how much I don't like it. If I don't like it, I don't buy it, but if I don't like it rather than actively dislike it, I'll eat it at other people's houses. If I actively don't like it, I won't eat it at all.

There are plenty of things that are 'good for you', but whatever it is that's good for you about them (whatever nutrient they provide), you can get from another food. I can't think of anything that has only one source.

No, if its a true revulsion. For me, that's fish and fatty meat.

If its just fuel, and I've no strong feelings about it for or against then yes, of course.

I don't love pasta but we eat it a couple of times a week. Not every meal has to be deliciously gourmet. It fills stomachs and is in budget, and we all eat it = on the menu.

pastypirate · 14/12/2023 12:43

I won't eat food I know I don't like. I'm an adult that's down to me. This includes peas and meat served on the bone. Vom.

pinkspeakers · 14/12/2023 12:43

Not really, but there isn't really anything I don't like to eat! I actively enjoy fruit and vegetables unless they are cooked to a soggy tasteless mess. I guess in general the only reason I wouldn't like something was if it was really badly cooked. Or I guess I generally don't like things that are very greasy, overly sweet, or extremely salty. And so I wouldn't eat those unless it was to be polite or I was desperate. No reason to eat them otherwise.

Actually, I don't like and therefore don't eat weetabix. Why would I? Unless it was literally the only thing available.

wildwestpioneer · 14/12/2023 12:44

There are some foods I really don't like but they are few and far between. I have foods I tolerate but would never order in a restaurant but we eat because they are good for you and other family members like them

Yeah I have sort of
Neutral food like peppers which is the equivalent of drinking water to me, it's not enjoyable but I don't actively hate it
Pistachios on the other hand I can't even smell without being sick!

Westfacing · 14/12/2023 12:45

No I don't!

If as a guest I'm served something that I'm not particularly fond of, and would never buy, I do eat it though.

As for your eating peppers that you don't like - why would you spoil your food by including them, as the small amount you would put in a sandwich will hardly do you any good.

Drop the peppers!

DitheringBlidiot · 14/12/2023 12:45

I wouldn't make a meal with peppers if I didn't like peppers. Weird.

christmaspaws · 14/12/2023 12:46

I've probably worded it really wrong

I don't actively dislike peppers, I eat them and it's "meh these aren't enjoyable like my fave foods but they're tolerable"

OP posts:
MaidOfSteel · 14/12/2023 12:46

No. I can't.

Octavia64 · 14/12/2023 12:47

No.

Why the heck would I eat food I don't like?

I try to eat healthy but I eat healthy stuff I like.

christmaspaws · 14/12/2023 12:48

Spinach is another. I wouldn't be OMG this is lovely and my fave food but I cook with it and eat it because it's tolerable and good for me

Maybe I am weird ConfusedBlushGrin

But if I just ate what I loved I would be living off pizza, cake and cereal

OP posts:
IvorTheEngineDriver · 14/12/2023 12:49

No. Never.

Ladybird69 · 14/12/2023 12:49

Yes if it’s really healthy and good for me! Obviously wouldn’t eat anything yukky but quite a few veggies that I don’t like but force myself to eat them.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 14/12/2023 12:50

I've been eating a pretty healthy diet for some years, also as a result of health issues. I'd say that I've come to prefer them, on the whole. I do still eat meat and fish. After a while, and with the right attitude, you stop having to try.

Westfacing · 14/12/2023 12:50

I love peppers roasted along with aubergine, red onions etc but wouldn't put them in say a salad as they don't really contribute!

But I do love colourful food, so would add a handful of them chopped in an omelette or tuna mayo sarni for the visual effect Smile 🌶️🫑

RosesAndHellebores · 14/12/2023 12:50

Food I dislike: okra, oysters, tongue, corned beef, sweetbreads, tripe, ox liver, whelks. No I don't eat it.

Food I'm not keen on: apricots, sweet potato, squid, whitebait, breakfast cereal (!) - I'll eat if I must.

Wheat dislikes me so I avoid.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 14/12/2023 12:51

Generally I don't eat things I don't like. The only exception is manners related if I am a guest.

So I will politely eat some things if served to me by others e.g. aubergine, courgettes.

But fish, liver, and mushrooms I wouldn't and couldn't eat. Not a chance.

Jins · 14/12/2023 12:51

No I don’t eat anything I don’t like, not even to be polite. I have a healthy diet without forcing peas or eggs or parsnips down me.

The best bit I’ve found about being coeliac is that people run their menus past me in advance.

Ponderingwindow · 14/12/2023 12:51

I definitely have food I don’t particularly love that I eat anyway when the opportunity arises. Mostly various vegetables.

if I am just cooking for myself, I choose food I enjoy. There are plenty of choices for good nutrition. If I’m cooking for the family, I might cook someone else’s preference which might be something I don’t particularly like, but don’t abhor and I will still eat it.

I add it to bulk it and for veg intake I guess
So instead of just having tuna and mayo, I do a big tub with diced cucumber, pickles, red onion, tomatoes and peppers and any other random salad veg

I don’t BUT I wish I would sort it out and learn to tolerate more foods. My list if ‘not keen on’ foods is long, as is my list of foods I actively dislike. I should tolerate more to improve my diet so I absolutely see why you’d include peppers in your meal.

christmaspaws · 14/12/2023 12:55

Not keen on is probably the best words

My dad will only eat food he actively likes so for veg he eats sprouts and carrots and mostly lives off meat and potatoes Grin
I suggest say peas and he's "I don't really like them"
Whereas I eat them even if I don't really like them particularly
