I've got one single Mary Berry cookbook from about 15 years ago after a friend was raving about it. I tried a couple of things and they were just a bit meh or unsatisfactory enough to not want to try again. It's gathered dust ever since. I know it's a treasonable offence to say so but her cookbooks don't inspire me and I don't cook her recipes. I do enjoy watching her on television though.

I hate watching Nigella, and Nigel too for that matter, but have loads and loads of their books and cook from them all the time.

What's that all about?Confused

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/12/2023 19:42

I also hate watching Nigella and have made very few of her recipes, but I really like reading her.

Nigel, if I can be indelicate, really gets on my tits.

Mont Blanc, meringue/pavlova with chestnut purée and cream or mascarpone

Rick Stein's iced Kougelhopf

Now I think about it Hugh and Jamie both massively get on my tits on TV but I have seven books by them and they are the first I turn to for midweek supper inspiration.

DuesToTheDirt · 13/12/2023 20:08

I hate watching Nigella

I hate the flirtiness, and cooking in the dark! and maybe I'm jealous that I don't have a massive house and swanky dinner parties

I make a ginger/mixed spice sponge with fruit and nuts, and dates. A light Christmas pudding. Even my kids eat it

Edited

I would love this recipe please 🙏

This is what my now grown up kids repeatedly ask for: Choux wreath

This is the sort of thing Mary’s good for, twist on a classic

Yes, you're right. This is where I'd probably turn to Delia for the choux pastry and wing the decoration myself!

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 13/12/2023 20:27

Eton mess.. crumbled meringue nest, whipped cream or ice cream, splash of baileys and either some mincemeat or whatever chridtmas stuff i have in... mince pies/ christmas cake/stollen etc

Vanilla Panna Cotta (not vegetarian, so it depends on your guests)

Really easy, we do it the day before and never any problems

Jaffa Cake Trifle... I saw it on a previous Christmas thread on here.
Orange Jelly dissolved with tinned clementines added as well. Pour over jaffa cakes and leave to set.
When set pour over Custard (I use a tin as easier to pour!)
Leave to set again. Whip up a pot of double cream. Pour over Custard and add hundreds and thousands.

Are you serious!

Panettone bread and butter pudding. It's so good I dream about it.

Mary Berry's chocolate berry yule log - happens to be gluten free too.

Traditional sherry trifle.

Spiced poached pears.

I’m stuck in bed with Covid and now I want to raid the cupboards, but can’t be arsed to move! This is making my stomach rumble.

wendywoopywoo222 · 13/12/2023 21:19

Chopped up chocolate mini rolls. Soak in Baileys. Add custard and cream on top.

And a vanilla cheesecake.

@therealcookiemonster oh my that puddings sounds wondeful...

Daffyyellow · 13/12/2023 22:34

Does anyone have a good Baileys chocolate cheesecake please?

PleatedShade · 13/12/2023 22:54

Ha! I've also been in bed with covid. Zero appetite since Sunday but this thread is rekindling my interest in food. Well, anything involving chocolate and whipped cream anyway.

Iloveanicegarden · 13/12/2023 23:08

Home made chocolate mousse , baileys poured on top, swirl of cream and grated chocolate/flake. Yum, yum and so easy

At least we’ll be ‘out’ for Xmas. I hope you feel better soon. Bloody Covid!

Yes, that's been my only consolation. I've felt absolutely bloody awful for three days and missed several gatherings, the ones I actually wanted to go to.
I hope you are on the mend too.

I made some Nigella brownies once that were an utter disaster. Never trusted her brownie recipes again. Her chocolate Guinness cake recipe, on the other hand, is a masterpiece.

I make the chocolate Guinness cake for my husbands birthday, it’s amazing!

Last year I made a layered lime cheesecake, not particularly festive but looked really impressive and tasted delicious. I was really nervous about the jelly, buying powder instead of sheets didn’t help, but it worked brilliantly.

Lime cheesecake recipe | BBC Good Food

Make this stunning layered, citrussy dessert ahead of time if you're entertaining. It's a crowd-pleaser that's part key lime pie, part cheesecake, part trifle

Maybe not for Christmas but inspired by a BBC Good Food recipe I’m considering a Banoffee pie with crushed banana chips in the caramel instead of raw bananas. It should be like nut brittle…
Also the upside-down pineapple stalk “Christmas tree” fruit salad from another thread, when I decide to chop into my stunt pineapple.
