How much is reasonable for a bottle of shop-bought wine?

HalebiHabibti · 10/12/2023 17:41

I spent 12.95 on a non-sulphitey bottle of red wine in an organic produce shop. DH is spluttering with horror, but IMO this is not a terribly high amount to spend on a bottle of wine, albeit it is 50% more than I would usually pay 😂

So, thoughts. How much would/do you spend on a bottle of wine whilst shopping?

Not more that £15 if it were to be drunk by guests. A tenner if it's for myself (DW is TT).

nettie434 · 10/12/2023 17:46

I think 12.95 is ok for an organic red. I'm happy with anything up to £15 for a treat wine - eg for guests or a special occasion. The few times I've spent more on a present, I've just not thought it was worth it. Happy to blame my limited palate though!

Precipice · 10/12/2023 17:46

Not terribly high, no. You can get cheaper wine (plenty of nice wine at around 9 pounds), but the difference isn't so great. There's a white wine from Waitrose that I like at 13 pounds.

So annoyed at myself for not adding a poll 🙄

I go for around £10 mark give or take a pound or two so that seems right to me, but my favourite is £26 a bottle in Waitrose. That’s more for special occasions!

Crunchymum · 10/12/2023 17:58

Don't drink anymore but my favourite wine (a Rioja) was under a tenner. Although not sure how much it costs now? ive been a non drinker for a few years

HeddaGarbled · 10/12/2023 17:58

For ordinary drinking at home: £6-£9
For special occasion: up to £15, but usually less

For me, £12.95 would be for a special occasion or gift - I wouldn’t spend that much ordinarily.

ButterCupPie · 10/12/2023 17:59

We (2 of us) share a bottle of M&S Notte Castellata Primitivo (Italy) every Saturday night. Costs £12. Used to be called Notte Rossa. On Fridays we have Pinot Noir (France) from Tesco £9.50. No point in buying rot-gut especially if you're not drinking much.

InefficientProcess · 10/12/2023 18:00

Tell him to look around a supermarket - loads of the wine is around the £10 mark these days. £12.50 is not ridiculous.

His wine pricing ideas may still be living in the 20th century.

HalebiHabibti · 10/12/2023 18:01

Tbf it's more than I would usually spend, but we were visiting ILs in their tiny rural town and I just had a "Shit, we should contribute booze" moment in the last shop open on a Saturday afternoon :D

Same as this

Shop bought wine?
Where else do you buy wine from??
Surely you just pay whatever the bottle of wine is worth to you. Some people appreciate organic or vegan wine, others want a good vintage or a particular wine-producing region (or all of the above). There's not really an upper limit on the cost of wine. When I lived in a certain part of Asia prices started at £50 for a decent French red.

HundredMilesAnHour · 10/12/2023 18:03

I wouldn't spend less than £10 on 'quaffing' wine. Usually I'd spent around £20+ but significantly more if it's for a dinner party or special occasion.

PiggieWig · 10/12/2023 18:03

Was it nice? I usually spend around £8-9 on a bottle for myself but if I fancy a treat I’d go to £15 for a Chablis.
I don’t think £12.50 is splutter worthy.

Purplerain0505 · 10/12/2023 18:04

We usually spend around £9-11 on a bottle. We also have a lovely little shop nearby that has some very nice bottles of wine at around £15 each, so sometimes we’ll treat ourselves to one of those.

What is this wine 🍷 please 🙏

dayone · 10/12/2023 18:08

I wouldn't do it every week but I would happily spend £13 on a nice bottle. Many wouldn't though and clearly your DH is in that category! I hope it's lovely, enjoy!

Icelandia · 10/12/2023 18:11

Between £7 and £15 shop bought. When you consider that a single glass in London might cost £8, seems like a synch.

Is it this one

How much is reasonable for a bottle of shop-bought wine?
NigelHarmansNewWife · 10/12/2023 18:12

The amount of tax we pay on wine in the UK is per bottle, not a proportion of the cost of the wine. Therefore with more expensive wine you're getting more wine value for your money. Whether it's better wine is a matter of personal taste.

HalebiHabibti · 10/12/2023 18:15

You could buy it in a restaurant to drink at the table, or via a company like Virgin to be sent to your house....

That's the one @vernatheraven

Enjoy 🍷

InTheRainOnATrain · 10/12/2023 18:25

It’s very obvious what you mean by shop bought wine OP don’t worry! Just bought in a normal shop as opposed to a restaurant (more expensive), by the case through a wine club (where you’d expect a discount), from duty free or anything like that!

In answer to your actual question though I’d say around £15 for a regular bottle, maybe £25 if we’re having people over and £50ish for a special occasion.
