How much is reasonable for a bottle of shop-bought wine?

I spent 12.95 on a non-sulphitey bottle of red wine in an organic produce shop. DH is spluttering with horror, but IMO this is not a terribly high amount to spend on a bottle of wine, albeit it is 50% more than I would usually pay 😂

So, thoughts. How much would/do you spend on a bottle of wine whilst shopping?

It depends where it comes from, it would be cheapish for a french one but spendy on something like a Chilean.

canyon2000 · 10/12/2023 19:33

£10 to £15.

RADIOOFF · 10/12/2023 20:17

When I started drinking biodynamic wine a few years ago £15 was around the minimum I’d expect to pay for something actually nice to drink. Prices have gone up since then so I’d expect to pay more, even reduced price from Ocado. Usually upwards of £20 from an (online) wine shop. I buy less now, though.

But I don’t think your DH can be spending much time in food shops. On the rare occasions when I find myself in a physical supermarket I’m astonished at the hike in prices for even very ordinary bottles. £12.95 would be an average amount round my way.

What on earth is biodynamic wine?!

£8 -£15 depending on whether it's from my local offies or from supermarket. £12.50 isn't outrageous these days!

Moonshine5 · 10/12/2023 20:49

40% of that will be tax

StillWantingADog · 10/12/2023 20:50

£8-9 for me.
£10+ would be special occasions or presents

GCAcademic · 10/12/2023 20:50

£12-£20, more for a special occasion

fuckssaaaaake · 10/12/2023 20:51

Honestly I only go for ten max but I'm tight

Shop bought wine?
Where else do you buy wine from??
Surely you just pay whatever the bottle of wine is worth to you. Some people appreciate organic or vegan wine, others want a good vintage or a particular wine-producing region (or all of the above). There's not really an upper limit on the cost of wine. When I lived in a certain part of Asia prices started at £50 for a decent French red.

Think she means supermarket. Different to a wine merchant

It is kind of like 'posh organic' but with New Age stuff - being in spiritual harmony with the soil, the sun and the moon, etc. Goes right back to Rudolf Steiner.

The important thing is that when you hit the point where even organic wine leaves you ache-y and sorrowful days after imbibing you will - if you really like wine - look for a solution. I don’t care much about claims and counterclaims regarding viticulture and science; all I know is that drinking biodynamic wine doesn’t leave me with the hideous after-effects of any other type of wine.

My favourite wines vary widely in price from 3.99 euro to 20 euro. The cheaper ones are all Austrian whites, but surprisingly good!

autienotnaughty · 10/12/2023 21:41

£7.50 max my favourite is lambrusco costs £3 in Sainsbury's

mondaytosunday · 10/12/2023 22:19

My favourite is £9 (Lindemans). Delish!

HappyCamperTent · 10/12/2023 22:38

I buy 19 crimes for around a tenner. Does the job!

His wine pricing ideas may still be living in the 20th century.

Yes, he's from Yorkshire 🤣

Start sending him memes about tight Yorkshiremen and suggest he may not want to be the stereotype. 😆

Our “house” white is £17 a bottle but we don’t drink every day by any means. House red is under £10.

I buy champagne on offer by the case and then treatier wine is about the same price as champagne.

seathewayahead · 10/12/2023 23:08

Around £12-20. Depends what the wine is really, some of my favourites are more like £25-35.

For ordinary drinking at home: £6-£9
For special occasion: up to £15, but usually less

For me, £12.95 would be for a special occasion or gift - I wouldn’t spend that much ordinarily.

Something along these lines.

alwaysmovingforwards · 10/12/2023 23:30

£10 a bottle buys a nice enough wine for drinking at home.

£20-£30 a bottle for a treat if entertaining or a guest at someone's house.

ZenNudist · 10/12/2023 23:44

I'm tight fisted when it comes to wine and not that great a 'nose' but wouldn't blink at 12.50. Even gut rot wine costs £6-7. I'm not fussy but don't enjoy something full of food colouring that turns my tongue black and leaves me with indigestion.

I spent £40 on 2 bottles in my local fancy wins shop yesterday treating a friend who does have better taste than me. We were eating dinner at home so could afford to buy nice wine. In the end we didn't finish one bottle (switched to other drinks!). Expensive wine encourages more mindful drinking.

Exactly the same a sthis.

Tailfeather · 11/12/2023 00:04

I am a wine snob, so would much rather drink a nice bottle of wine at home or at a dinner party than drink a cheap bottle of wine marked up to £25 in a pub. We often do corkage in restaurants too. So probably £25-£50 a bottle or £50-£100 for entertaining.

Deathraystare · 11/12/2023 09:56

My favourite (though I rarely drink) is Jam Shed -under £6 a bottle in Sainsburys. Delicious! I pay a "wine tax" to my friend when I stay at hers !
