I'm 32 and have a young toddler and baby. Find myself ordering takeout instead of cooking because I'm exhausted. Eating way too many carbs. Generally toast for breakfast or a cinnamon roll. Pizza or leftover Thai curry for lunch and a pasta or noodle based dinner with chicken. Husband loves buying biscuits, ice cream and sweets as treats. I feel rubbish despite quitting drinking and never have any energy. I've tried losing weight by eating soup and salads but I'm always starving and end up snacking. Please help.

Eat normally but ditch the biscuits /ice-cream etc.

Birchvalley · 10/12/2023 07:23

Make a couple of swaps: brown rice and wholewheat pasta and noodles. For meals increase the quantity of veg, decrease the quantity of carbohydrates, include some protein. You should feel fuller for longer and not need the snacks.
It's working for me.

It needs to be super convenient, quick, delicious and healthy.

Buy nice salami, cooked bacon/cooked chicken and wack it on salad with plenty of cheese (feta, goats cheese or whatever) I use olive oil as dressing or buy a pot of coleskaw and use that as the dressing.

Buy a bag of stir fry veg and fry with plenty of oil, chicken as above, and soysaucs/ sesame oil and garlic.

The key is to ensure you are satiated with plenty of fat and protein. It tough when you are tired all the time though.

ZekeZeke · 10/12/2023 07:26

Home made soup to fill up on. Keep it frozen in the freezer. 5 minutes to defrost.

DustyLee123 · 10/12/2023 07:28

Only eat fruit between meals. Stop eating the ‘treats’ he brings home.
More protein, boil some eggs and stick a couple of chicken breasts in the oven with some crushed chillies or salt and pepper on.

NonanteNeuf · 10/12/2023 07:32

Bacon and eggs

Steak and eggs

Omelettes

It’s all fast and easy to make and packed with satisfying protein. Natural appetite suppressants

Sususudio · 10/12/2023 07:34

Veggie traybakes. Don't need to be very refined. Just roughly chop veggies- peppers, mushrooms, carrots, tomatoes- into quarters, add feta and halloumi, slosh on some olive oil, garlic and red chilli flakes, shove into oven for 15 minutes at 200. Eat with pita and hummus. It's what I eat most lunchtimes.

Urgenthelplease · 10/12/2023 07:36

Thanks everyone. This has reminded me I am quite fussy. Don't eat eggs or cheese for example.

I just think meal planning helps. So you don't reach for a takeaway. Even a supermarket pizza is better than domino's.

Sususudio · 10/12/2023 07:41

Daal? It's very healthy. You can make a lot and freeze in batches. Lovely for this time of year.

bluechameleon · 10/12/2023 09:02

Have porridge for breakfast. It takes a couple of minutes in the microwave, and you can share with the toddler and baby (if baby is weaning).
Then for lunches and dinners up your veg and protein. So, for example, last night we had spaghetti carbonara, and I made sure half my plate was vegetables.

wormshuffled · 10/12/2023 09:13

When I get overwhelmed with dieting I opt for ready meals. I get that it's processed and not very eco friendly but it's better than hitting the takeaway for me.
M and s and the Asda gym kitchen are my go to's

Bireadwhatiread · 10/12/2023 09:15

Dice up two onions and two peppers and boil with spices of your choice. Add a small amount of Quinoa and boil for another 20-30 minutes. The spices are everything but it's genuinely delicious and low calorie.

Yup- a spinach and garlic mushroom one is delicious and doesn't feel diet-y.

Sorry didn't see that.
A tasty daal with coconut milk is also delicious and satisfying.

AmyFFismyhomegirl · 10/12/2023 09:24

I love just roasted veg. I use onions mushrooms pepper courgette fennel and roast for 1/2 hour with some olive oil, salt and pepper. Sometimes a couple of cloves of garlic. Add a tin of tomatoes for another five mins and have 2-3 meals for the week. Add whatever protein you like-i add nuts, cheese or (cooked obvs) chicken. It's really filling and actually tastes nice you can also add random seasonal veg as needed

Urgenthelplease · 10/12/2023 09:55

Thank you. I'll try the roast veg and quinoa. What do people eat daal with? Rice or pita I thought which is the same problem I have now.

OP posts:
Sususudio · 10/12/2023 10:00

I eat daal with rice or flatbreads, but not too much of either. You can also put different veggies in the daal, like spinach, tomatoes and onions. Still healthier than pizza. You could also try healthier snacks like nuts or fruit to fill up. Certainly, with small children, you don't want to be starving, just a few swaps. Maybe oatmeal with fruit or yoghurt and fruit rather than a cinnamon roll.

AmyFFismyhomegirl · 10/12/2023 10:02

Dhall I have with cauliflower rice. You can make it yourself. Or if you're lazy like me buy it from the supermarket in a microwaveable pouch. I mean it doesn't taste like rice but with a curry it bulks it out well and ends up carrying the curry flavour well.
I'm not going to pretend it's as nice as rice tho!

Urgenthelplease · 10/12/2023 10:35

Yeah I hate cauliflower rice to be honest same with brown rice and wholewheat pasta and bread. I think I'd rather just have smaller portions of the things I do like. I don't mind a decent salad with protein but I'm so hungry an hour after.

OP posts:
JumpingJills · 10/12/2023 10:38

I don't like cauliflower rice either but I actually think just putting daal over frozen veg mix (not mashed up or anything) is great, it's not pretending to be rice but still has the effect of bulking out/being a vehicle for the daal.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 10/12/2023 19:46

Do you eat fish? Supper quick to cook and really good for you.
Jacket potato with beans or tuna, the potato takes a while to cook but absolutely zero effort.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/12/2023 20:16

What about Greek style yogurt, fruit and nuts/seeds for breakfast if you don't like eggs? Way better than toast or pastries and just as quick/easy. You can make 2/3 portions at a time in pots to take to work if you're out early.

For daal, add veg (cauliflower, spinach or grated courgette is good) and have a bit of naan if you don't want rice. Or quinoa would be good if you like that.

You can shortcut jacket potatoes by microwaving for 5/10 minutes then blasting for another 5/10 minutes in the oven/air fryer to crisp up.

Can you batch cook soups with protein and chunky veg so it's filling and you can eat as much as you like?

I make a 'taco soup' that has chicken, beans, sweetcorn, peppers, onions, tomatoes and spices in so it's really filling, tasty and healthy.

How much cooking, childcare and cleaning etc does your DH do and what's your respective working hours? What leisure time do you both get? DO you get the same amount of down time?

mamaison · 10/12/2023 20:22

Add lots of chicken breast to the soup and salad. I buy a bag of frozen chicken tenderloins and steam and chop/shred. Goes in fridge to be added to pre bought soup and bags of salad. Freeze if necessary and heat in pot before adding the soup.

Snacks I have things like 15 almonds, carrot, square dark chocolate, mini apple, teaspoon peanut butter.

Breakfast I would make a batch of high protein breakfast cake, waffles etc
