I am so annoyed with my GP

I've asked them twice if I could have a Covid jab this autumn, and they said point blank no. Last year, I had the jab in November. I'm 60+, have pre-diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Guess what? I started to feel a bit shivery this morning and I now feel like I've got the flu coming on, so I did a test just to be on the safe side. Bright red positive. Damn - and I saw one of my friends yesterday evening, who is in the middle of chemotherapy.

I am so cross.

You just book online and tick the box no need to go via GP or wait for a text.

DarkForces · 08/12/2023 16:49

But having the jab wouldn't stop you getting covid so would have made no difference to the risk to anyone else

PeterRabbitt · 08/12/2023 16:49

You know that GPs don't set the criteria don't you? We get told who to vaccinate and stock to match that number, if you want to blame someone look higher up the tree because it's not the fault of Primary Care.

So sorry OP. I don't know what's going on with the covid vaccinations this time. My in-laws Dr surgery were giving them out to people with the flu jab whether they were eligible for both jabs or just the flu one. My FIL is entitled to both but my MIL should only have had the flu jab. Me, dh and 4 of our 5 dc are eligible and have had our jabs but there are a lot of people who were eligible last year but aren't this year which doesn't make sense. Then there are people like MIL who get offered one when she isn't supposed to.

Don't you sign up and book online if you're entitled to the jab on the nhs? My son gets it and we've never had to go via GP. It's all automated. If you're not in a qualifying category, you can pay for a jab, it's not that much and would've been worth it in your situation.

You cannot pay for a private Covid jab in the UK - they are not available.

Earlier this year, there was some talk about a private Covid jab possibly being made available after the New Year - but it was not expected to be cheap (itro of over £100 was being suggested in September).

You can pay for a private flu jab (which are between £12-£20 depending on which pharmacy you book them for) or a private shingles jab (£400-£420 for two doses).

Last year was different - the jabs were offered to all.over 50s, inc people like me who haven't seen a doctor in years.
This year, for obvious reasons, jabs are only offered to people considered vulnerable. So it's good news that the OP was considered fit enough not to need it.
Just not a big deal, in any way.

I don't consider that I am fit enough to not need it. I have long-term issues, as well as those I've already mentioned I have constant sinusitis they can't get to the bottom of, and am very prone to bronchitis. I also used to get asthma when I was younger and still get out of breath if I'm unwell.

So I think I should have had the booster, to be honest.

And I'm feeling utterly shit and need to go to bed, so I'm leaving the thread now.

Thanks so much for all your sympathy. Not.

Has he had the jab this year?

You’re wasting your time. Some people just love to blame the GP for everything. It’s probably the GP’s fault OP got Covid in the first place.

I’m afraid government policy isn’t based on what you think.
Everyone is sympathetic to someone suffering with Covid, but you want people to say it’s OK for you to be angry with GP, but it isn’t.

stepintochristmas1 · 08/12/2023 16:55

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it but it's normal to test before meeting with vulnerable person .

Yes. Weeks ago.

If you live with someone who is immune suppressed you are eligible. Which meds is he taking? Pre diabetes, high blood Pressure and high cholesterol aren’t underlying serious conditions.

Spacecowboys · 08/12/2023 16:58

isittimetoflounceyet · 08/12/2023 16:46

What - like me you mean? Over 60 and with several underlying health conditions?

Pre diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol aren’t listed as clinical risk.

Tinkerbyebye · 08/12/2023 16:59

isittimetoflounceyet · 08/12/2023 16:34

Last year I got a text inviting me for both the covid booster and flu, and I've spoken to the surgery twice about having the boosters, and was told that pre-diabetes isn't diabetes so isn't on the at-risk list. How come I was allowed it last year then?

Earlier today, DH and I were talking about it, and we agreed I'd try again, and go private if necessary. Too bloody late now.

I'm worried I've given it to my friend.

Creterias changed from last year when I think it was anyone over 50 for both

and it would never have stopped you getting covid, just make it less severe, so you would still have been infectious for your friend even if you had the jab. . And no one really knows how long the jabs have lasted for, your bodies already had the jab however many times so hopefully it will fight covid off

daisypond · 08/12/2023 16:59

I’m ill with cancer and I’m not eligible for Covid/flu vaccine.

Bet that made you feel good saying that, did it?

Enjoy kicking people when they feel down, do you?

OP posts:
OzziePopPop · 08/12/2023 17:02

Let your GP know you are your husbands carer. You will then qualify as a carer does. My husband got jabbed as I’m seriously at risk if I get covid, he’s down as my carer.

Whataretheodds · 08/12/2023 17:02

Why didn't you just book the jab online via the NHS site?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 08/12/2023 17:03

You can be as cross as you like with your GP but they don’t make the rules.

As many pp have told you the criteria to get the vaccines are different this year to last.

See your user name fits you

if you live with someone entitled you can get the jab, but you go in via the nhs website and book it. I got it as carer for my elderly mother and the fact I do a lot for my sister and nephew who are both compromised. I just booked it on line

your underlying health issues are not considered as requiring the jab automatically, but as I say you can get it because of your husband

dont go blaming everyone else on here, or indeed the doctors, when you could have looked it up yourself and booked it on line via the nhs site

and as I said before it doesn’t stop you getting covid, so in all likelihood you would still have got the bout you have now

Lilacdressinggown · 08/12/2023 17:04

YABU. The GP doesn’t set the criteria, they just have to follow it. If they gave you the vaccine you would be depriving someone more vulnerable of theirs.

Lifesd · 08/12/2023 17:04

What diff would a jab make? You can still catch it.

wiseoldcat · 08/12/2023 17:06

You have to be over 65, not over 60.

Check the NHS criteria here:

If you're not eligible you're not eligible. It's the government's fault, not your GP.

I’m allowed it due to high blood pressure which is on your list? Not that I wanted it. Weird they so t give it to you. It doesn’t stop you getting covid tho.
