Woman so loud in restaurant today...

MinnietheMoaner · 07/12/2023 16:16

There was one woman in particular who was SO LOUD in a pub restaurant today - she talked loudly and she laughed loudly. We were at the next table and struggled to hear ourselves talk. I wish I had the courage to get up and say "excuse me but we can hardly hear ourselves talk because of you " but surely that would be a bit rude?
There wasn't the option to move to another table. We heard all about her and Alfie and the woman with all the dark skin around her ankles.
No chance of giving her the evils as she was in full entertainment mode for her table. People like this are such a PITA. Just a vent here!

Probably hard of hearing. Annoying but not worth stewing over.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/12/2023 16:33

I hate this. No one else can have a conversation or hear anyone else.

I can only think their conversation must be so fascinating they feel the need to share it with everyone else .

Its just rude

FatFatMary · 07/12/2023 16:50

I usually assume people like that have NPD

scrunch22 · 07/12/2023 16:51

I hate people who have to be so loud, I honestly think it is for everyone else's benefit because of course why wouldn't they want to listen! And before anyone says it.. you can tell the difference between these people and those who may have problems with their hearing!

I sympathise, this happened to us once. It was like sitting next to a school play.

TomatoSandwiches · 07/12/2023 16:54

If I'm in the wrong mood I match their energy with an obnoxiously louder laugh, usually shuts them up.

Maddy70 · 07/12/2023 16:55

My friend and my daughter are exactly the same so loud but they are both hard of hearing and don't think they are

isittimetoflounceyet · 07/12/2023 16:59

You treat this by laughing loudly when they do. If they don't notice, the person with them is bound to (especially if you'accidentally' catch their eye whilst doing it). They will hopefully kick the culprit on the ankle under the table, and get them to shush.

SirChenjins · 07/12/2023 17:17

You have my sympathies - some people seem to have no self-awareness. We were at a cafe recently and an entire family were like this - everyone else was talking at a normal volume and this group could be heard over everything (I'm partially deaf and if I could hear them it means they were bloody loud). They'd obviously forgotten to switch from outdoor voice to indoor voice mode.

similarminimer · 07/12/2023 17:20

Wouldnt it be better to say 'seems that noise really travels in here and we are struggling to hear each other, could you turn it down a bit?' than stew theough your whole lunch?

zurala · 07/12/2023 17:20

My son is like this. He has no idea how loud he is and struggles to talk quietly. I spent lots of time telling him to talk quieter but he gets upset if I do it too much because he just can't hear or control his volume. I think some people are just loud.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 07/12/2023 17:25

We once moved hotel room because there were some loud people drunk drinking wine by the outside fireplace right next to our room when we came back from dinner at gone 10 at night. Reception moved us to a room well away from them. We passed them with our cases as me moved room and the penny dropped with one of their party that it was because of them... We got upgraded though.

harriethoyle · 07/12/2023 17:47

My DH speaks really loudly in pubs etc because he's partially deaf and the background noise makes it much worse.

frozendaisy · 07/12/2023 18:01

It's a pub not a library

Hastheslotharrivedyet · 07/12/2023 18:25

No sense of self awareness that’s the problem. Not everyone finds her as fascinating as she finds herself

sadsack78 · 07/12/2023 18:28

Just fyi, the person with dark skin around their ankles should see a doctor- it could be a sign of insulin resistance.

BobDylansMasterpiece · 07/12/2023 18:31

I went out with my sister, just after covid. We sat and chatted, not massively loud, however we were the only people in there. A couple came in, sat 2 tables away from us (in a large empty pub), and after a while came up and told us to be quiet, and took the micky out of our accent (local) and phrases.

If they had been polite we would have apologised and been quieter.

We were in shock they were so ride, and left shortly after. They then moved to our table (which was really odd) so we think they were upset we had sat in their table?

Shame the OP didn’t know, she could have told them and joined in the conversation. They might have got the hint 😀

Maybe she doesn't have perfect hearing?

Chamomileteaplease · 07/12/2023 18:45

Thing is, even if you are hard of hearing, you will know this and therefore surely moderate your voice?? It doesn't give you carte blanche to be really loud.

tiny bit ableist 🧐

I don’t have perfect hearing as I’m partially deaf, the result of meningitis as a toddler. Over the years I’ve learned to adjust my volume so I don’t shout - it’s possible to do.

SirChenjins · 07/12/2023 18:49

Not ableist at all @Twilight7777 - see my last post. It’s just something you learn to do.

LauderSyme · 07/12/2023 18:51

My relative has narcissistic traits and is disturbingly loud in social situations but gets really put out if anyone says anything. What matters to them is their feelings and comfort, not other people's.
