I am a very happy sahm & I need to be due go dhs irregular work pattern which involves being on call /needing to leave the country at the last minute etc.. So I obviously need to be here for the dc.
I would love to set up a small enterprise to keep myself busy & for the extra income for myself. Would love some ideas & I am absolutely not in any way crafty. Non crafty ideas would be most welcome

If it’s for the money it’s likely to be far more profitable to get a zero hours contract part time job. If you have no specific talents/interests/services to offer (no shade - I don’t either - that’s why I don’t run my own business and work for someone else instead) personally I think it’s naive to expect to find something people are going to pay you for. It’s not realistic to have no specific offer, not pay for childcare and expect to turn a profit.

MsMcGonagall · 07/12/2023 07:14

You could decide to set up an ebay (or similar) shop for something specialist. Not craft, manufactured goods or vintage. (or could just be second hand kids stuff!) If your DH travels abroad could he bring back something not so available in this country?

SqueakingSnapfish · 07/12/2023 07:15

I tried all sorts when I was a SAHM.
Avon, making jewellery, making candles, genealogy research, dog walking, book keeping.
None of it made a blind bit of difference to our finances - in fact with most of them we were worse off.
I did a degree with the OU (in the 2000s you could do it for free if you had a low enough household income.) Now 15 years later I'm a teacher and earn more than DH.
I would never recommend a 'side hustle' type business if you actually need to make a profit, as a cure for boredom absolutely.

Is matched betting still a thing?

Whinge · 07/12/2023 07:18

If you want to make a bit of extra money then have a good clear out and sell things you no longer need. Clothes, kids toys, household bits etc.

There's no such thing as a little business that will make you money while also fitting around children, DH job and requires no skills.

Seagrassbasket · 07/12/2023 07:21

I don’t know if it’s still profitable as too many people might be doing it, but I’ve seen tales of a few people who bought massive lots of second hand clothes and sorted through them and sold on eBay etc. There was a young lad on the telly doing it who made quite a lot of money. Just buying and selling anything really if you have an eye for it.

Study for a qualification that will enable you to get a job when your children are older.

Nosleepforthismum · 07/12/2023 07:21

It won’t get you cash straight away but learn DIY and make improvements to your property/garden. When you sell, you will get a bigger return on your investment than some of these other suggestions. It’s extremely difficult to start a business and immediately turn a profit. If you need cash straight away, I’d look at getting a zero hour bar job for the evenings when your DH is home.

I think this is probably your best bet.

disappearingfish · 07/12/2023 07:27

If you want cash for yourself does that mean your H is controlling with money?

Itsallok · 07/12/2023 07:28

If your kids are in school then think about things that can be done then - but realistically, the vast amount of "cute little businesses" for SAHM with no skills make no money. Fact. Stop using your husband as an excuse to never work. Or at least pledge to not come back to MM whining when your husband leaves you for someone less boring.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 07/12/2023 07:29

So you have no skills, no interests and no ideas, but would like MNers to tell you what to do with little outlay, entirely flexible and not too many hours that makes a decent profit?

Honestly this seems somewhat naive.

If you want some extra money then zero hours contract work when you can fit it in.

If you want to improve your long term earnings then learn to do something - loads of free coding courses for example to get people in to tech.

If you are bored find something interesting to do.

SecondUsername4me · 07/12/2023 07:30

The simplest solution, to return cash ASAP, is to get a job. How old are the dc? Why an aversion to childcare?

BettyBoobles · 07/12/2023 07:32

EBay trading- buying things that are going at an undervalue and relisting them to sell at a higher value. You need to get your eye in for what sells and what counts as a reasonable price, and it’s not that much fun. You can make money though and it’s compatible with being a SAHM.

If you have a partner who is at home in the evening, some bar work would probably be more
lucrative and enjoyable.

What a horrible comment. Some people are just nasty.

Needmorelego · 07/12/2023 07:34

If you can commit to it become a child minder.

Plumful · 07/12/2023 07:34

get a job or use the time to study for a qualification and give yourself better options for the future.

Boymum2104 · 07/12/2023 07:37

I embroider knitted cardigans & jumpers with personalised names. Earns me around £75/£100 per week.

RaininSummer · 07/12/2023 07:40

Your best bet would be studying so that you can head into a job once children are older.

ALightOverThere · 07/12/2023 07:42

A friend of mine trained as a yoga teacher while she was a SAHM. she started off teaching friends in her home and now has a studio and employs six teachers.

She already had her own yoga practice- it’s not something you could just wake up one day and decide to do. But maybe there’s something you’re good at that you could teach others to do?

No he's not. It's just that I'd like us to have spare cash for a very nice holiday, luxury weekend etc.. We're not struggling but those things are luxuries not necessities..

I’d look into office services, typing thesis’s etc. I’d also look into Wages and accounts. We run a small business and I do the wages, and the accounts, I’d happily pay someone’s else to do those things so we can just run the business.

my friend did it years ago before computers at home were really a thing and used Sage software, for small business's like one person bands, plumbers electricians who are on the road all day I’m sure they welcome someone to do their office and admin base side of things.
