Next door neighbour new CCTV

Sassqueen · 06/12/2023 13:27

My next door neighbour (I live on the end terrace, next door is mid terrace) has recently had 3 CCTV cameras installed on the property. One on the front of the garage (our garages are joined and drive way is a shared area. One space per house in front of our garages) so is pointing at my car, and another on the back of the house overlooking the garden. The garden one concerns me the most, as their garden is small and the CCTV will more than definitely have some of my garden on the images. AIBU to send a note asking them to blur out/mute where my garden is on the camera? I have 2 young children and I dont want us to feel watched in the privacy of our own home. The installation man told me she was getting the CCTV, the neighbour didnt actually let me know she'd be doing this, and that the neighbour had been 'having trouble recently'. I'm unsure of rules regarding having home surveillance so any help appreciated. Just to note the neighbour is a busybody/nosey type and I very much keep to myself, hence the worry 😂

Ask them to have access to this camera.

Mouldyfoodhelp · 06/12/2023 13:36

I can't help but am interested in seeing some replies to this thread as my next door neighbour has a camera pointed down an alleyway/ straight at my front door/ back garden which irritated

HappyHamsters · 06/12/2023 13:44

There is plenty online info about home cctv, data protection and gdpr, look at the Giv.UK site which is very useful.

The rules on the ICO website are clear that they can't film your private property, that you should have access to any footage and they tell you what they do with it, and they have to have signs.

The ICO, the police or the council aren't the slightest bit interested in enforcing these rules and there's nothing you can do.

Sassqueen · 06/12/2023 13:54

Thanks @HappyHamsters I will take a look. Just wanted to see if other people had this experience too! @daffodilandtulip Fantastic, looks like my nosey neighbour will be staying very nosey then. Might flash her, see if she likes that 🙄

They certainly shouldn’t be recording your private garden so I’d make sure they have blocked it out but the shared drive/any public footpath caught it fine normally.

LIZS · 06/12/2023 13:56

Can you not just ask to check the field of view obscures your property? Where is the third one?

SutWytTi · 06/12/2023 13:57

You can ask to see what they are filming.

We need new law in this area, as unfortunately people are twats and overstep boundaries.

We already have the law, the problem is that no one enforces it.

Not always the case. We've had a number of complaints about CCTV (Police) and officers have gone out & spoken to both parties about it.

Yesterdayortomorrow · 06/12/2023 14:03

When my next door neighbour had it installed I asked the man doing it, as some of it was pointed at my door and windows, and a local play area. He said he would block it out from showing my house, and the park.

We don't have clear enough law that allows for private action, really.

Somersby12 · 06/12/2023 14:06

You're very quick to label your neighbour. Why do you insisist on referring to her as nosy? If she has been having trouble recently she is absolutely within her rights to protect her property.
If your car space is on a public road there is nothing you can do about it.
If you feel that your personal space could possibly be invaded via your neighbours cctv then you can knock in & ask to see if the cctv covers your garden if so she will need to readjust so it only covers her own property.

Sassqueen · 06/12/2023 14:10

@LIZS the third one is the front of their house, isn't overlooking my property at all and is pointing to the pavement so not bothered about that one.
Thanks for the replies everyone. Guess I will have to pop a note to them, they are regularly out of the house so it's hard to get them for a chat unless its at 9pm or 5am 🙄

Our neighbour did this when we moved in. One was pointed into our bedroom window and one down our garden. Neither one was pointed at his own property. Previous owners were young and attractive. We are neither. Apparently filming two near naked fat and wrinkly 60 somethings wasn’t what he wanted. The cameras were moved in 24 hours.
The law says one thing - but trying to get it enforced is another things entirely. sometimes more direct action is required.

Sassqueen · 06/12/2023 14:13

@Somersby12 I have lived in my house for 4 years and the neighbour has griefed me for things such as friends parking outside her house (on a public road) and cranes their neck to look in my living room window. I'd like to think I know they are being nosey. I have also revieved 0 problems in the area we live in and as I say their house is literally attached to mine

We have CCTV.

We were advised to ensure that we cover other's gardens and we don't.

However every time there is any kind of theft or break in near by we get people at the door, sometimes police, asking to see the footage to see if anything can be spotted.

YANBU to communicate with them about not covering your garden. But go and speak to your neighbour instead of a note. Human to human direct communication.

Sassqueen · 06/12/2023 14:21

@MissBuffyAnneSummers Totally agree! Im not as bothered about the car camera as I am the garden, as I say I dont want my children being filmed. I'm wary of their presence on social media as is (I never post them) so I dont fancy a neighbour having CCTV watching

I was so thankful my neighbours cctv covered part of my front porch when a delivery company tried to shaft me that a large ticket item was delivered and proudly showed gps placed them at my house. Turns out mr evri promptly loaded my TV back on his van.

Sassqueen · 06/12/2023 14:56

@Myfabby Totally agree CCTV can definitely be useful at times!!

My Mum’s cctv that points down the side of the house could capture the half the landing window of next door. Landing window as obscure glass, but even so, it needed to be blocked off.
The installation team blocked that section out, and they and mum invited the neighbour round to see they had done so. All happy.

torchwooduk · 08/12/2023 00:00

What about peoples ring doorbells? some have a large field of view and will cover multiple house. I think back garden ones maybe yes you have a point, but any at the front then no.

Millions of people have CCTV now and even if rules are being broken they just can't be enforced. Should anything happen on your property, you might be grateful the neighbours have CCTV.

We have had the Police knock on ours a few times asking to look at the CCTV because of some incident or car passing they want to check. I won't provide it to them, it's for my own use and maybe neighhbours should it catch anything.

Famousinlove · 08/12/2023 00:21

'When it comes to CCTV, whether it be your Ring doorbell or whether it be a hard-wired sort of CCTV system, you've got to make sure you don't intrude on other people's privacy. The problem with Ring is you can listen live to it as you can with most CCTV cameras, but especially with Ring there's an audible option.

If you are putting CCTV around your house, maybe to protect your car as it was with this particular individual, you've got to make sure the view of the camera doesn't intrude or invade into other people's properties, so certainly not looking into other people's windows, not even encroaching into their gardens or their property line.'

JRM17 · 08/12/2023 01:33

I bet if you're burgled or your car gets stolen or one of your children gets hurt you will be begging the neighbours to see the CCTV. Some people are never happy.
