Mids 50s bleeding after 2 years menopause - this is freaking me out!!!!

56 and went through menopause prob 2 years a go - well havent had a period or bleeding for at least 2 years Im sure. End of November I had very sore breasts and nipples tender and they felt huge. Plus a clear wet discharge just like when I knew I was ovulating. Very weird. Then a few days later had some real stomach cramps - I have suffered from endometriosis but this seemed to have settled since meno etc. I did have annual scans on a cyst as well but Ive not had one for at least 2-3 years.

Anyway this morning I wiped myself after the loo and blood. I have a bit of pain in my lower back and abit of grumling stomach pain nothing too horrific. This is probably come about 8 days after initial pa

This has freaked me out. Any advice? GP call and appointment IF I can get one!!!!!

Couldn’t read and not reply. Phone your GP and get an appointment. Tell the receptionist you’ve had post menopausal bleeding. You should get an appointment quickly.
I had this, was put on a 2WW appointment for gynae and had a hysteroscopy. My bleeding was caused by a polyp (benign).
Hope everything goes ok.

galaxybeyond · 06/12/2023 13:20

No appointments, got to call at 8am tomo. Soooo scarey. Ive got an event I need to go to tonight with a client, dreading it

See your GP. I would explain exactly what the issue is to the receptionist or do an econsult (if your surgery does them - ours does and it's brilliant, we get a response same day with what needs to happen/booked appt). This is the sort of thing that should be seen fairly urgently in general practice. My mum had the same (mid 60s) and it was endometrial cancer, which btw was treated and she is in remission and perfectly well now. She did drag her feet quite a bit about it as doesn't like to make a fuss, but it's definitely the sort of thing to make a fuss about. It's not the same, but I have a funny looking mole that has changed shape/size in the past few months. I rang GP last week and I'm seeing them on Friday. It's not nice to have to deal with, but it's the sort of thing you have to be a squeaky wheel about.

Op I had to do a double take. I could have written your opening paragraph. Exactly the same has happened to me. I'm seeing GP tomorrow and trying hard not to worry. The hormonal symptoms in the run up to the bleed seem to suggest a late random period. That's what I'm hoping for.

Fedupbeingworriedallthegoddamntime · 06/12/2023 22:55

Exactly the same happened to me 2 years after my last period, I had a period, all the usual PMT symptoms you describe, it also followed exactly the same pattern and lasted 3 days exactly, had all the test under the 2 week pathway, no reason found!

ovenchips · 06/12/2023 23:04

@galaxybeyond Would deffo contact GP but something similar happened to my friend this year around 2 years after menopause. She was actually having an (unrelated) ultrasound and the sonographer told her she was madly ovulating! 2 weeks later, full on period. Saw GP (ultrasound follow up - all fine) who was unbothered by ovulation and period. Said it happens sometimes. No periods since.

galaxybeyond · 06/12/2023 23:05

UPDATE
Got through event was ok but tonight now....Really bleeding bright red blood also niggly period type pains. So hoping U get an appt tomorrow

Same here - all tests normal and hasn’t happened since

Have a GP appointment tomorrow morning so see what they say

I've been referred on the two week pathway for a scan. I knew to expect that, but still feel sick at the thought. My anxiety is high even though this is probably not something sinister. Just when I was enjoying the run up to Christmas!

galaxybeyond · 07/12/2023 20:53

@mumsnoangel bless you. Can I ask if yr post menopause? Im 56 cant remember exactly but think Ive not had a period for about 2 years. Im insisting on a referral.and scan!

OP posts:
mumsnoangel · 07/12/2023 21:39

@galaxybeyond yes last period 19 months ago, and the one before that was 11 months before. Definitely considered to be post menopause. I'm 55 years old

galaxybeyond · 08/12/2023 11:41

UPDATE
Saw GP she examined me once to see if dhe could feel anything and second time to see where the bleeding was from which she confirmed cervix. Referred me on the 2 week track for a scan and biopsy she said...should be before Christmas, so will see. Day 3 of heavy bleeding.

She did say as I had other symptons blosting, period type pain and very tender breasts it could be a random period/ovulation etc but not normal in a 56 year old etc.

@mumsnoangel ah so pretty much identical to me. Fingers crossed for you, keep me updated if you want to of course 😊

This happened to me. Consultant said it was a surge in hormones.
A few years later during a smear the GP noticed fibroids, sent me for an ultrasound and to a different consultant. He scorned his colleague’s diagnosis and performed a hysterectomy.
All is well. Fingers crossed it is for those going through this now.

TupperJen · 08/12/2023 12:00

I am going through this, had scan and then have seen gynaecologist. He said 99% are polyps that bleed, very rare to be cancer and IF it was it would be slow growing and contained within uterus... So not great, but not worst cancer to get.
I'm booked in for scope to look and biopsy polyp/lining. Because the uterus shrinks post menopause they prefer to look and biopsy rather than do D&C and biopsy removed tissue. So definitely needs investigation, but try not to worry too much.

TupperJen · 08/12/2023 12:02

My gyn says hysterectomy not recommended unless confirmed as cancer as major surgery and pelvic floor muscles all attach etc, so can be issue down the track.
But if you have to, you have to. But not needed for most people with post menopausal bleeding.

Iamnotavicar · 08/12/2023 12:09

I'm also 56 and thought I was done with peri, but I've had some bleeding on and off which was put down to cervical erosion. I've had it treated twice. A different GP and most recent gynaecologist suggest that I may not have gone through the menopause yet. Some of the issue seems to relate to the convention that the average age of menopause is 51, so the medics say I "must" have gone through it by now. But I had a full on period at the end of September including PMT, achy boobs beforehand. Everything else has been ruled out by scans, biopsies etc. I'm hoping the current GP will run some blood tests too

mumsnoangel · 12/12/2023 16:45

@galaxybeyond I had my gynaecology appointment today and the ultrasound was quite reassuring. Womb lining nice and thin. The gynaecologist thinks it's a late attempt at a period, but to be on the safe side I have a smear and hysteroscopy in January. She was quite reassuring so I feel like I can enjoy Christmas. How are you?

galaxybeyond · 12/12/2023 17:18

@mumsnoangel that's positive news and great that they are double checking so to speak with the hysteroscopy and smear.

Im absolutely fine, bleeding has stopped and so has the cramps and sore boobs. Just waiting on my appointment but it was only Friday I was referred so may hear something this week hopefully

Take paracetamol before you go...had exam with no painkillers.

After my two week pathway exam... GP relative commented that COVID vaccine might have interfered with periods...as a side effect. I've not heard if there has been confirmation by studies yet...it was all quite early in vaccine administration.

galaxybeyond · 18/12/2023 21:12

Got my appointment early January...over the 2 weeks but they are running behind due to Dr strikes!

OP posts:
galaxybeyond · 18/12/2023 21:12

LatteLady · 18/12/2023 21:41

I just want to thank OP and the other poster for being sensible and talking to your GPs asap. I wish you both the best of luck.
