Champagne cocktails

I know a Kir Royale is supposed to be made from champagne and cassis. It sounds good but I've never had one. What would be the likely result if champagne was substituted for prosecco or cava and the cassis for...Ribena? The latter isn't blackcurrant liqueur so obviously no alcohol content and a good deal sweeter. Probably not a good mix.

I must buy some cassis and Chambord and try these things for myself.

Worth a try?!

@TheTecknician I volunteer to assist you in your scientific study

FestiveAuntFanny · 04/12/2023 15:40

Any dry fizz will do but you can't do without some kind of liqueur otherwise too sweet - doesn't have to be blackcurrant, you're sometimes offered strawberry or blackberry.

The king of champagne cocktails however is...The Champagne Cocktail.

Take champagne glass
Drop small cube brown sugar in it
Shake some angostura bitters onto the cube.
Cover the cube with brandy.
Fill with champagne

Drink

Don't have more than two!

My French friend introduced me to Champagne Noisette which is a glass of champagne laced with a drizzle of noisette (hazelnut) liqueur. Divine. And I'm sure you could substitute the champagne for cremant

This is the champagne cocktail I came to suggest!! Was introduced to it in my early 20s and it has been a crowd pleaser ever since. Absolutely agree with the limit 😂 it's a corker!

CremeEggThief · 04/12/2023 15:49

Well I think it would work with any sparkling wine but not ribena!

I adore these champagne cocktails but that champagne noisette also sounds wonderful. Now just to buy some hazelnut liqueur in the interest of science........

Tracker1234 · 04/12/2023 15:52

Definitely not Ribena....

seadreams · 04/12/2023 16:16

We always have Prosecco with a drop of cranberry juice at Christmas. Sometimes we add some triple sec/cointreau if we have it handy! Delicious

GasPanic · 04/12/2023 16:25

The idea of wrecking decent champagne by putting stuff in it is sacrilege. It's also a complete and utter waste of money.

Stuff like cava, sparkling wine is exactly the right sort of low cost drink to make abominable concoctions with.

Taking expensive wine/spirits that have had their taste carefully crafted and balanced and then wrecking them to make mixer drinks is just the very definition .of futility.

AdaColeman · 04/12/2023 16:25

I think it would be a criminal waste of Prosecco to mix it with Ribena!

I agree with @FestiveAuntFanny that the classic Champagne Cocktail is hard to beat, though I'm also fond of a Bellini, a fresh taste and looks lovely in the glass.
I'm also partial to champagne with a splash of Campari, a sharp taste and fab colour!

That's a Poinsettia isn't it? I love the colour, it looks so pretty and festive in the glass.

Summerdew · 04/12/2023 16:30

Love a classic champagne cocktail, and now definitely going to try champagne noisette too

Retsina · 04/12/2023 16:51

A Snowball made with any type of sparkling wine to replace the lemonade is delicious - in a glass I usually do 1/3 advocaat, squeeze of lime and 2/3 sparkling wine.

Really, champagne is just fizzy wine, just a drink like any other, it's not a sacred potion.

You can drink it, mix it, cook with it, do as you like. Just because you don't seem to enjoy cocktails doesn't mean others shouldn't.

TheTecknician · 04/12/2023 17:12

I only asked about Ribena as I still have some in my fridge from when I was poorly a fortnight or so ago! I think I'll keep it away from sparkling wine. I'm tempted to buy Chambord largely because of the orb-shaped bottle! I suspect they're plastic rather than glass - I would keep the latter.

Having tried a few options I can recommend:
"Champagne" cocktail made with cava and Chase rhubarb vodka
Bucks Fizz made with clementine juice
Never had a worse hangover than Prosecco & Chambord 😂

Mine's glass (bought it last Christmas - there's a little left)

(It's nice on its own too)

I find Chambord a bit sickly, you might not of course, and it is quite expensive compared to a regular crème de cassis but the packaging is cute, you can get little tiny bottles if you just wanted to try it.

My mum once sharedthe wisdom that ifyou buy a cheap red a couple of drops of ribena in it transfoms it to actually drinkable. When DH and i were young i bought some really cheap red plonk for a dinner party so cheap it came in a plastic flagon! Added the few drops of Ribena possibly overdid it and spent the evening hearing how the wine was “interesting” and quite sweet for a red 😳 admitted afterwards and he made me promise never to do it again.

ChampagneCommunist · 04/12/2023 17:25

What you need is a French 75:

1 measure gin
2 measures Fizz
1/2 measure lemon juice
1.5 tsp white sugar

All in a shaker; shake & serve.

gotomomo · 04/12/2023 17:34

Prosecco or cava works fine, no point wasting good champagne. Grenadine works well with cava, been drinking it all week on holiday Grin

InTheRainOnATrain · 04/12/2023 17:42

I use Cremant for ‘champagne’ cocktails. Prosecco is too often a bit sweet and makes it sickly. French 75 or the champagne cocktail mentioned upthread are my favourites but a Kir Royale is very festive.

No, they're glass. Chambord is delicious. Also a frozen blackberry in the bottom adds to it!

Love this British cassis
