Does anyone really look younger than their age?

Online on forums, social media, on dating profiles and even in real life people claim to look younger than their age, they are X age but don't look it. They get ID's in the supermarket buying wine.

I am always highly sceptical because I've know people who say to my face how they look like they are 25 when they are actually 38 because they have no lines or wrinkles when I am looking at them and thought they were actually in their 40's and they have obvious wrinkles and grey hair, people are delusional! Honestly the capacity people have to delude themselves about anything is quite staggering and I have never met someone who claims to look younger and it actually turn out to be true.

When I was younger I thought some older people looked younger so I once thought a woman when she was 49 was closer to 30 but that was because I assumed all people of 49 looked "old" which isn't the case at all and looking back she looked great but she also looked her age which is fine.

Going back to the first case where the women was convinced she looked over 10 years younger, what could I say I just said yeah you look great and its the same anytime anyone makes that claim. People aren't going to dispute it.

People often say I look younger than I am. I don’t know though - to me I just look like me 🤷🏻‍♀️

I certainly don’t get carded buying booze though lol. I guess I don’t look that young!!

@ThreeRingCircus I think some of it is that younger women (of course not all) seem to wear a good deal more make up. I know some in their early 20s who whilst looking fantastic could certainly pass for in their early 30s. So then when someone like me in their 30s doesn't wear much make up and possibly looks 'fresher' the lines can get blurred and confused.

I saw a picture of Abby Clancy and her mum the other day and her mum looks amazing for her age (62 I think) and she looked more like Abby's sister.

She's has tweaks im sure so I don't agree with those that say tweaks make people look older. It can but it doesn't always.

I once nearly put my foot right in it at a party. I didn't know many people there and there was a toddler pottering around with who I assumed to be his teenaged big sister. Thankfully, she spoke to me first and I realised she was in fact his 30-something year old mum! That could have been very embarrassing. In my defence, she was tiny and almost doll-like in appearance.

You tell me? How old am I? Photo taken 2 seconds ago

(I occasionally get told I look younger)

I’d guess anywhere between late 40s to late 50s. Though I wouldn’t be that surprised by early 60s.

pontipinemum · 04/12/2023 15:05

@HectorGloop not too bad that way around. I was in the cadets when I was a teen. I told the Colonel I knew his grandson.... it was his son.

BlueGrey1 · 04/12/2023 15:05

I’m 48, have no obvious wrinkles ( definitely have some very small smile lines when I small ) but I think I look my age, my face is definitely sagging and have the start of jowels etc
Just because you don’t have wrinkles does not mean you look young.
I know someone who is 25 and has a lot of wrinkles ( sun damage) she still looks around 25 though as she has no sagging.
Most people look around their age ( even after procedures) except for the very lucky few

fulawitt · 04/12/2023 15:05

People who really look younger don't pipe a word about it. They enjoy it.

NeonSoda · 04/12/2023 15:06

I'm 38 and still get ID'd for energy drinks and painkillers regularly. Even got ID'd in 'Spoons a few weeks ago - that's never happened before.

My current director at work, who hired me, didn't pay much attention to my CV and for a year thought I was over a decade younger than I was because I went to university late. She just didn't question it because I seem to look quite young.

I put it down to not really wearing makeup when I was younger, and spending a lot of time swimming and doing other sports. I've always worked in leisure and I guess that's kept me youthful. I am starting to get crows feet at the corners of my eyes and the off grey pube, but the hair on my head is still very gingery like it was when I was younger.

I guess I usually dress quite young too - either jeans and a hoodie or a tracksuit most of the time.

I don't really enjoy looking younger, like some people claim we do. It's a pain in the ass to be refused to be served in the supermarket or the pub, and I don't generally walk around with any ID on my person. It's also a pain for dating, tends to attract younger men which isn't great. Or even worse, it attracts older men who are deliberately looking for younger women...

BlueGrey1 · 04/12/2023 15:07

Looking at your photo I’m guessing around 46/47?

user1471523870 · 04/12/2023 15:08

I don't think it's just how your face looks, but your body language, what you wear, your voice, how you speak, how you dress, your life circumstances etc that determines the age you look.

I believe my face is average for my age (nearly 50), possibly slightly less wrinkled, but not much, However I am veeeery tiny - short/slim/not curvy - basically the size of an average 12 year old who has not developed yet, but of course not firm or tonic (despite spending lots of time exercising!).
The above, mixed with my dressing style, a high pitched voice and a very young child make people believe I am in my 30s.

OhHowTheDogsStackUp · 04/12/2023 15:08

AI seems to agree I look early thirties, which is what I get told.

I'm not sharing my actual picture, but I am forty.

Does anyone really look younger than their age?
DisforDarkChocolate · 04/12/2023 15:08

I get told this all the time but I think it's bumpkin. Look a bit longer and while I don't have any wrinkles the signs of middle aged are bloody obvious.

BlueGrey1 · 04/12/2023 15:09

@HeavenCANTwait

guessing 46/47, you look good

smoleyjolie · 04/12/2023 15:10

@OhHowTheDogsStackUp Those things are nonsense, AI thought my Niece was 68, she's 9 and look like a nine year old girl.

I definitely know people who look a good bit younger than their actual age. One friend of mine is particularly babyfaced and could easily pass for mid-twenties despite being mid-thirties.

App13 · 04/12/2023 15:12

I had always been told that but im sure it'll catch up with me now that I'm in 40s.

For me its genes and clean living.

SirChenjins · 04/12/2023 15:12

I think most people will look somewhere in their decade - so at 45 you'll look anywhere from 40-50. There are a small number of people who look much younger or older than they are, but they're a minority.

Abby Clancy's mum is indeterminate in that photo, but in real life there would be giveaways like her neck, hands, figure.

I think many of us are also terrible at judging ages as it's not an exact science.

GasPanic · 04/12/2023 15:12

You can look younger than your age.

But mostly only to people inexperienced at telling peoples ages or people that are not looking properly.

There are subtle hints that give it away. Smoothness of the skin. Lines etc.

The thing to me that seems to cause skin aging is sun exposure and/or smoking.

I have a sibling, one of us really likes sunbathing, whereas the other keeps out of it and when they do uses high SPF. The difference in appearance between our skin is significant.

SirChenjins · 04/12/2023 15:14

@HeavenCANTwait I'd say mid fifties like me.

OhHowTheDogsStackUp · 04/12/2023 15:17

@OhHowTheDogsStackUp Those things are nonsense, AI thought my Niece was 68, she's 9 and look like a nine year old girl.

Very likely! But it is what other people tell me. And no I don't ask or agree!

Lifeinlists · 04/12/2023 15:18

I answered the door aged 32 holding baby DS approx 9 months. A woman said " Is your father in?" I said "My father?!" a bit incredulously. She looked a bit flummoxed and said "Oh are you the house owner?" "Well yes"

Then she leant back and shouted to her companion who was ringing next door's bell " Hey, look at this woman. I thought she was about sixteen!!" I was duly looked at and they agreed. I told her how old I was and I don't think she believed me.

Sadly, no one seems make mistakes about it these daysGrin

SignoraItaliana · 04/12/2023 15:19

@HeavenCANTwait I would say late 50's - early 60's but if I met you in person, I'd tell you you looked early 40's.

Now tell me you're 32 and I will go and hide in a corner.

Burgundylover · 04/12/2023 15:20

I am small, slight and quietly spoken. I was also very shy when young. I was taken for much younger than my age for a long time and I think it is your size and manner as much as looks.
I never asked how old I looked but would be given children's tickets/bus fares until around 25. When I was 21 I bought meat in a butchers and they asked me if that was what Mummy had sent me out to buy. I was refused admission to bars and cinemas often - this was years ago before you had to show ID to buy alcohol.
Even in my 50s I was told I looked young for my age but that could have been politeness.

kitsuneghost · 04/12/2023 15:20

I have no wrinkles at 49 but I do still look my age
I used to look younger than my age - but it caught up with me.
