Rehoming cat

He's 14 years old and a tiny bit difficult. But he's our cat and part of the family.

DH has over the years become more and more allergic to him. He has a cat allergy and didn't really want a cat because of that, but we got one anyway (soz), the cat loves him and he's fond of the cat. But his allergies are getting worse.

they've always been better while we've been away on holiday...but we've just come back from an extended and even I can see how instantly DH is worse as we got into the house.

I don't think DH wants to be the one that makes the decision in case I blame him. But honestly, DH is a nicer person when he's not suffering from his allergies (he's a bit of a hypochondriac and over dramatic in my opinion, but it is a genuine problem).

We don't have anyone obvious who could take him...

Aargh...I just don't want to think of him in a cat rehoming centre lonely and missing us....

Your DH needs to seek medical help to manage his symptoms and you absolutely do not re-home your cat. I can't believe you're even contemplating that for a 14 year old pet

The air purifiers are amazing, about 20 mins in each room massively helps

Have you considered rehoming DH?

Sorry, I couldn't resist, but this is what it would feel like to re-home our cat and we have only had him for four years, adopted him when he was 8 from cats protection. I couldn't even consider it. I think your DH needs to explore anti allergy meds etc.

That was my suggestion.

Could you have a PIV system installed?

The cat has no idea that he's causing any stress, and DH pets him every night on the sofa where they have a little love in while the dog looks on jealously. Then DH goes and washes his hands and face.

We've tried HEPA filters before.

We've also got a woodburner (shoot me woodburner and cat potential rehomer - I'm doubly damned) which could be cleaned out more often.

The floors downstairs are all hardwood.

I think partly it's we've come back and the accumulated dander etc has hit DH hard after 3 weeks of feeling well and 'normal'.

He's seen specialists, he's had the injections....I've been trying to ignore the fact it's probably the cat for years now. But it's kind of hard to ignore it now - and it has got worse.

It doesn't seem like you're doing enough to address all other possible allergies and issues, before even considering rehoming. Are there other issues with the cat you haven't already stated?

Any other issues apart from DH becoming steadily more allergic to him? No.

OP, as stated above you could consider home to home rehoming. I got my adult cat that way from a woman who had moved into a new rental where she was not allowed to keep her cat. This was facilitated by a local cat shelter, if you are in the north of England, I can PM you details.

My mum also inherited a cat at about 12 years old. As someone else said above she’s older and she wanted to home a similarly older cat. There will be options.

no the house itself is clearly an issue though, you said the was allergic to dust too? So address that fully. Don't even consider rehoming until all other avenues are explored, including the suggestions from a cat rescuer with 5 cats who is also allergic but manages!!

@TomatoSandwiches A PIV system? That is a cure for allergies?! You really do learn something new every day.

I don't see where I said it was a cure, it can help improve/reduce symptoms though.

Hi

hope you sorted it out. I came here today with the same thing , no allergies, but I’ve had my cat since kitten, she’s now 9, I never thought I’d say this but I’ve completely gone off cats & dogs. Had them over 30 years now, but now I’m just so sick of fur everywhere ( and yes I clean every day I have an ocd ) fed up of picking up dog 💩 and cleaning litter tray ( started using it two years ago due to taking in my sisters dog after she passed away ) I was guilt tripped into taking him. Because I didn’t want anymore dogs. He is a lovely dog , and I trained him as soon as he arrived, so gets on very well with my cat. But I’m just so over animals. Yes yes you can all say how horrible and cruel I am , no one’s perfect !! However I can’t rehome them out of principle. I’ve lost that family bond with them, to me they are just annoying now. And can honestly say I’d never buy another animal. Not to mention my cat has now turned into a complete waxxker ….. she NEVER went on my kitchen counter, now she’s all over it, I come downstairs in the morning, fur everywhere, scratching any wood in the house so all doors and frames, units scratched to bits. Never did any of this before. As she has the forest , a huge garden and plenty of scratch boards etc. she’s also started eating my dogs food ( weirdo ) uurrggghhh poxy animals.Anyway I look forward to your roasting ! No doubt I’ll be bombarded with venomous reactions 🤣
