How do I get rid of out of date hand gel sustainably?

I've got lots.. Hand dispensers and litres of refill through a second job I had over lockdown who were brilliant at making everyone feel safe.
It's dated but every single bottle, gel, refill bottle is plastic.
Do I empty the contents? Would any organisation or charity want this?
I have no clue where to best get this stuff gone without adding to landfill.
Please.. Any ideas welcome 🤗

Empty into the sink and recycle the plastic surely?

Where do you think sink water goes to?
Please don't do this.

I completely don't want to just put all these chemicals down my sink!! That's why I'm asking sustainable 😲

Does hand gel really go out of date? Can't you just use it or offer it to friends?

TreeWell · 30/11/2023 00:52

I don't know how safe it is, but you could always dump it out in a tray, let it evaporate then recycle the bottles. Even dumpling it on waste, none recyclable cardboard like a pizza box would work.

We used to have large plastic bottles where I worked and they'd dry up to nothing if the air could get in.

The main ingredient in most of them in alcohol then various gelling agents like glycerin which aren't really dangerous - it's the alcohol that's the problem.

It shouldn't go down the sunk because it can cause fumes/fires in the sewers!

Ok so I'm looking at the back of a hand gel dispenser out of date 07/2021
Warning notice is "flammable liquid and vapour. Keep out of reach of children. Dispose of contents/container in accordance with national regulations"
I've lots of this!
I was given this January 2021 when we were all very careful.

Hand sanitiser is made up of water and alcohol and tiny amount of preservative and thickener and perfume.

This is not going to cause any harm to the water, rather disinfect it for Thames water !!

EeesandWhizz · 30/11/2023 01:09

Use it as a cleaning fluid? It's great for cleaning sinks and whiteboards. Might do glass/mirrors, although I haven't tried it.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 30/11/2023 01:09

It’s quite good at cleaning off sticky marks, ink/ pen marks and paint etc etc. useful if decorating..

Coffeebutter · 30/11/2023 01:10

and by the way, if it were that dangerous we wouldn’t be letting kids run it into their hands. It’s a bit drying, but unless you intend to drink it - it’s NOT dangerous.
isopropyl alcohol
relax or read the label

Tighginn · 30/11/2023 01:10

It's 70% alcohol, I doubt it will actually go off. It good to use in icey weather for frozen locks, ect.

AutumnFroglets · 30/11/2023 01:11

Oh dear...it didn't cross my mind that it went out of date. I figured the alcohol content would preserve it for years.

< goes to check her bottles >

Gowlett · 30/11/2023 01:12

I’d keep using it, no problem. How much have you got?

Scissor · 30/11/2023 01:16

Love the cleaning and lock ideas!!
I never thought alcohol had a 6 month expiry date..I just didn't think this was alcohol based as it's got expiry dates stamped all over.
In my head I had some really rare toxic cleaning chemicals.

Ocani · 30/11/2023 01:21

LOL did you stockpile?

Just use it for cleaning. Glass, mirror, taps, screens etc. It is just alcohol so doesn't clean as thoroughly as things like Cif - I mean, I wouldn't rely on it to remove all germs and bacteria from a bathroom or kitchen. But for getting little areas sparkling it's good.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 30/11/2023 01:22

Brings up jewellery quite nicely..saves using the vodka!

penjil · 30/11/2023 01:29

Stop being such a do-gooder and just check it in the bin.

If you are worrying yourself about how to dispose of an out-of-date hand gel bottle "sustainably", then you haven't got enough going on in your life..

Scissor · 30/11/2023 01:32

Thank you darling, so good of you to be helpful at 1 something a.m. We've obviously nothing better to do together!

Scissor · 30/11/2023 01:41

To all helpful answers. I have around 5 litres of the stuff and shall now happily use as household cleanser plus keep some for jewellery/ locks ..then put containers in recycling.
Thanks
It was paid for by all of us so I'm being good by actually doing stuff with it.
Ooh... A do gooder.
I'll take that as a win.

I'm still using handgel dated 2017 😱

flowerchild2000 · 30/11/2023 03:30

It doesn't really spoil though. Just give it away. My doctor's office had several boxes that were out of date, but they said it was still fine, it doesn't go bad.
