This seems to be popping up everywhere. At first it was funny as it's suggesting nakedness. But now it's aggravating! It's so common now. Why?
Feel it's particularly bad at work. Please bare with me on this.

Yes, thank you!
I always think that but I see reign used so many times I had begun to doubt myself.

I don't think I ever see it written correctly on MN. I imagine it is in Pedants' Corner, but I rarely read there.

Men having problems with their prostrate...

My BiL is like that, he allegedly can't pronounce it. Which is pathetic - he can say "state" so why not "proh-state"?

No idea whether he can't spell it correctly as well.

@PedantScorner I think that the home environment has a great deal to do with it as well. My kids were born in the UK and went through the British school system, but they don't make these horrendous mistakes because they've grown up in a household where literacy and articulate speech were valued and encouraged. They are still keen readers and my DS is a published poet.

Your point about grammar is interesting; My two grew up in the era of SPaG obsession, though they escaped the dreaded fronted adverbials. They were bombarded with grammar at primary and not at all at secondary, but they never lost the habit of writing correctly.

I did some grammar in secondary school in the Netherlands, but none after Year 8; we were expected to know it by then. However, we did carry on studying grammar in French and German in a much more intense way than is done in MFL teaching in the UK.

I think there are a lot of factors involved in the deterioration of the way people in the UK manage their own language. It would be interesting to see whether the same phenomenon has occurred in my native Netherlands.

@Queucumber I feel the same as you. I don't want to get bare with anyone!

PedantScorner · 30/11/2023 20:38

@pointythings , I read a lot and have done so most of my life. We were corrected if we used sloppy speech or slang at home.
At school, some teachers would correct poor language, but some of the teacher's language was grammatically poor.

English was taught in large mixed-ability classes at the pace of the slowest.
I don't recall feeling any inspiration. Maybe that was me. I don't recall being told why we should read or were studying anything.

Some subjects were taught well and I looked forward to those lessons, but English wasn't one of them. I did OK, but I studied other languages too.

PMSL at two (2, II) typos in a very short thread title. If only we were all perfect like you OP!

@PedantScorner the Dutch school system is highly selective, so your experience would not happen over there - students who are able and interested in learning will start their secondary school experience already set apart from those who have other talents and skills. I also despair of the standard of MFL teaching over here, even under the new 1 - 9 curriculum and at 6th form. For my French A level equivalent, I was expected to read a total of 15 books over 2 years. This had to include a minimum of 4 pre 20th century ones and 2 pre 18th century ones. Three had to be plays and one had to be a volume of poetry. It Obviously categories could overlap - I read Racine and Moliere as well as Baudelaire. The literature exam was internally moderated and oral - i.e., one had to answer questions about the books in French. Fluency was tested separately and was a half hour exam on a topic chosen by the student, but it wasn't possible to rote learn and parrot it. Written work had to be in French. It was hard work, we were drilled in spelling and grammar, but I still speak fluent French and read for pleasure in the language.

Phase when they mean faze. It's a strange one because "faze"'doesn't look correct - but it is

PedantScorner · 30/11/2023 21:10

@pointythings , it sounds great and that you did well .
In the UK, where your school is makes a big difference.

pointythings · 30/11/2023 21:14

@PedantScorner it really does. Our local secondary isn't particularly leafy, but it does cater very well for the whole range of ability as long as the students are engaged and willing to work. Our 6th form is very good as well.

But even for my kids (and for me), parental support is hugely important. A lot of young people round here don't have any.

I need to get all this out..

Aloud - allowed.
Spelt - spelled.
Smelt - smelled.

I carnt - I can't.
I aren't - I am not.

And one that's really bugging me lately is are/our!
"That's ares"
"Are house is big"
It's our! Our, our, OUR!!!!

Ahhh, that's better..for now.

Although, oddly, and I imagine simply becoming regular over time, ‘aren’t I…’ is acceptable.

PedantScorner · 30/11/2023 21:18

Who your classmates are makes a difference too. If they don't have the parental support, or want to do well, it affects your motivation.

I agree about being 'phased'/'unphased'. 😠

That always annoys me.

The one that really, really bugs me is lays or laying for lies or lying. It's everywhere.

I was sat observing someone doing their job about a year ago and watched her write "super seeded" instead of "superseded". Didnt have the guts to correct her

I sat , or I was sitting.
